This had damn better be true. It's been, what, 4 years now since they've said anything?

I thought I'd be more excited about this since Half-Life is like the only running series I'm ever excited about anymore (though I am also hyped for Marvel vs Capcom 3), but now that there's a glimmer of hope, I only see problems for me.
You see, both eps 1 & 2 were incredibly short and quite disappointing considering the time it took to release them and I doubt they'll actually put for the effort to make ep 3 longer or better (even though they rightfully should considering it's been almost 3 goddamn years)... if they were to release it as a shortened version, they'd have to make it downloadable for the 360 and unfortunately I neither have live or a way to connect my 360 to the net (not living at my house, currently) and I'm in no position to play it on this shitty PC.
So how the hell would they release it? Do another Orange Box? What could they bundle with it to make it worth a full-priced release? Probably looking too much into, I guess they can always release it as a budget title, but I forsee them just releasing it as downloadable content since releasing a disk would be more costly.
With that said, even though it's probably gonna be one hell of a jolly-good disappointment, I'm still more hyped for this game than any other currently in sight. That's just the magic of Half-Life

^ Frankly, I don't think it will be EPISODE 3, I'm betting it'll be a full HL 3, that somehow also ties into Portal.
Just a guess, but makes more sense than another episode.

Source engine is pretty dated now so HL3 would make more sense I think. If it is a full blown HL3, we can probably expect to play it sometime around 2014. Valve time, gotta love it.

It's always messed up in the Valve headquarters. But look at what they've given us.

With all the time we have been waiting i wouldn't be surprised if they had been developing the third episode/game all along!
Though maybe i am being hopeful.

That's pretty much my assumption too. I'd guess they hadn't said anything because they didn't want fans on their asses about how long it was taking (which they would be even more so if they knew it was definitely in development.) Now they can make a big surprise announcement when its almost done, and give us a nice release date. I hope.

Even as a dated engine, it has held up very well. I wonder if they could just tweak it a bit rather than have to redevelop entirely.

That e-mail doesn't necessarily mean anything. "Not Ep. 3" doesn't rule out the possibility of Half Life 3. Also, Valve is known for trolling their fans. For example, from the first link you posted:

I have been praying for a full HL game versus the episodes.
Spectulation: Since the vessel in episode two was an Aperture Science vessel...
I've seen interviews in a couple of magazines several years ago about how they would like to connect the portal gun and the gravity gun somehow to influence the gameplay. It couldn't be like Portal since Gordon is in the HEV suit but it would be puzzling.

Source is actually built to be future-proof, or at the least very easily updated. The Source engine used in HL2 is not the same Source engine used in TF2 or L4D (those have added features such as multi-core support, for example, and thus require more horsepower to run).
