The incident took place during the Festival of Saint Isidro, considered to be the most important event in the bullfighting calendar, at the Plaza de Toros las Ventas bullring, which can seat up to 24,000 people.

I saw the picture too and the first thing I said was, "Good". I'm not an animal activist or anything, but bullfighting is pretty barbaric.

I came into the thread to say the same thing. I eat meat, and have no problem with killing animals for food. But the outright torture those bulls go through for the amusement of the crowd is pretty sick. Glad to see one of the "courageous" bullfighters finally got his ass whooped.

Here's my take on the matter: the bull was shipped over from some breeding pen in Omaha, NE, and when it heard that Spain's full of Communists, it just totally flipped out and neck shanked that guy.
If I was a bull, that's what I'd do.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "good"--I don't like to see anything hurt, animal or human--but I'm not crying about it either. You know the risks when you do something as insane as torturing a poor bull to the point of lunacy, and then teasing it for an hour or two.

at any rate, i agree, bullfighting is a waste of a sport and time. i can understand seeing the beauty in terms of the fight between man & beast, but to do it for sport like that is ridiculous imo.

I'm not big on animal rights or anything. In fact, I'm all for a fight to the death between any two living creatures. I just can't feel sorry for someone if they get hurt fucking around with something that has spikes growing out of it's head is all.

Yep, that is exactly the entire point of the sport. Bullfighters don't like bulls who don't fight back. The newsworthiness of this comes from that particular matador's high profile. People get gored all the time, bullfighting, as I understand it. The reason that it's news with this guy is because he was really good at bullfighting.
Also, I agree that bullfighting is a bad thing.

OK, so I finally saw video of this (while catching up with last week's Colbert Report) and...holy shit. That is insane, seeing a horn coming out of a dude's mouth like that. Ouch, I keep holding the bottom of head in pain. He's lucky to be alive.
