Sixth for me cause it's probably the largest console war ever and contains my personal favorite system of all-time, the Dreamcast.

6th gen was the most well rounded imo. All the crap is finally filtered out and the remaining consoles were all worth owning, each with a quality library of games.

That being said, many of my more memorable gaming experiences reside within 4th and 5th gen.

Fourth generation.

You want to talk about console wars? Nothing was ever as vicious as the SNES/Genesis war.

Fifth generation was hands-down the worst.

Fourth...honestly, I don't think anything was as intense as Sega vs. Nintendo...even with PS2 vs. Xbox, you already had made your allegience.

I am a fifth generation fan boy, though I am sure that is mostly because it is what got me into gaming in the first place. I never got into the NES, SNES, or any Sega system like I did with the N64. I like the Wii, Gamecube, PS2, and PS3, but nostalgia keeps me coming back to the N64... and Pokemon Snap... don't judge me.

Still, I was and still am more of a handheld gamer than a console gamer.

Seconded!

Personally, SNES and Genesis/Mega Drive are my two favorite consoles. They represent a good piece of my childhood.

The fifth generation should almost be two generations. I love the N64, and the PSX became one of the most popular console ever after a rough start, but fifth generation almost killed the industry. Expensive consoles with underwhelming libraries like the Saturn, 3D0, and Atari Jaguar, as well as late 4th generation entries such as Sega CD (yes, I know it's not technically a console) and the CD-i, made parents wary of buying new consoles. After all, what was the point of buying expensive hardware if the games would dry up after a year or two and mainstream retailers stopped carrying them? The N64 and the PSX would eventually offer stablity, but it really was a wasteland there for awhile.

I grew up playing the fifth generation and reading about the sixth. I think the first modern console I played was the Playstation - and the first game was (I think) Quake II, which had an excellent port.

This is really weird. I feel like the exact same thread was posted a few months ago with the same exact replies. Forum deja vu!

In my opinion, the fourth generation was best because that took place right in the heyday of my childhood and that whole era had a special feeling about it. All of my fondest gaming memories take place during that generation.

I have to say third, because I spent hours in quiet isolation playing NES and loving every moment of it. SNES was great, don't get me wrong, but it's kind of like the second person you ever have sex with. You know what you're doing now so you're getting it on a lot more, but the moment's not as special as the first.

Who likes role-playing games? Me. Way too goddamn much.

You can basically poll anywhere on the internet besides IGN and get the same results. I'd still say that 4th generation gamers are the ones who popularized the market as much as it is.
