SO of course, it's gonna take a little bit of time before it actually gets signed and put into place, but I for one, am loving this dumb policy is finally getting put to rest. Regardless of any sort of advantage or disadvantage this adds to the military it destroys another barrier of sorts. Thoughts, opinions? Any hope/worry that this will lead to more acceptance of the gay and lesbian community?

Honestly, I think it could actually put a damper on a lot of homosexuals, considering a lot of people who join the military aren't exactly the free spirited open arms type, so I expect to possible hear a few stories about openly gay soldiers who are subject to abuse.

I work at a political call center and I've talked to many people who served in the military who are of the opinion that they shouldn't allow gays in the military and some who openly admitted (higher ranking officers included) that they singled people out for being gay/black/Jewish...all that.

The way I see it, if you're willing to fight and die for our country, I don't think it should matter what your race/religion/creed/orientation is/ Although I never had any REAL problems with "don't ask, don't tell", but I understand why some people didn't like it.

No doubt there is going to be a backlash in the service to open gay soldiers, that only makes me respect the people who either join up or come out even more. I don't view this as having so much significance now as it hopefully will in say, 20 years for example. There seems to be a stigma, aura, general feeling or whatever that plagues this and similar areas of life that needs to be broken. Goddamn, it needs to be taken out back a d beaten with a shovel, very slowly, and with a pizza break in the middle.

I think my mind has always been in a fantasy world when it comes to these issues because I dont understand why its and issue at all. It makes no sense to me, yet, a vast majority of the country thinks differently than I do. I can only hope that I can pass down some of the what if guilt my parents gave to me onto the next generation so maybe in my childrtens life this isnt even a talking subject

Honestly, I could care less. I guess it's good for gays/lesbians who feel like they need to be open about their sexuality, but I don't think it's going to change things all that much. I think that any member of the armed forces, black, white, Asian, Native, gay, straight, dendrophile, doesn't really matter what, they've got balls for being willing to put their life on the line for the country. I might not agree with the wars that we're fighting, or support the military/industrial complex fuckers like Cheney who get rich off of international strife, but I salute our soldiers for being willing to do something that I wouldn't do unless the Red Chinese army or Russians or whoever ends up launching an assault on the country itself (in which case, I'm going to post up with the wife and in-laws in the high country and blow every one of them I see to Kingdom Come, or die trying).

As a Member of the Navy, we live in pretty close quarters while out at sea. 80 some guys share 3 bathroom stalls, and 2 shower stalls. I can see it making some Homophobes extremely uncomfortable when that certain person is showering across from them, or watching them come out of the shower. Do I think that being Homosexual in anyway shape or form damper your ablity as a Solider/Sailor/Marine/Airman? No. I've known at least 2 people on my last ship who were unable to come out, and they were some of the best workers I we had.

I think this is a great move. In a modern day we live in, "Equal Rights" need to be just that, Equal for everyone regardless of skin color, religion, sex, etc. I would also hope this would open the door for Homosexual Spouses to have the same Benifits as a Hetrosexual couple.

Time will only tell, but as Invader stated, this will fade out as time goes by, just as when people of diffrent color started to serve in the Military, there was racism, and hatred. There will be inital problems from the idiots. But at the end of the day, it'll grow out.

Good, that's all I can say. Anyone ignorant hick who doesn't want different types of people allowed in the military just because they're uncomfortable with it is just the worst type of human fucking sludge I can think of.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

The only gay serviceman I knew was when I worked at a restaurant and he was one of the servers that picked up shifts every now and then between his military obligations. He was a lance corporal in the Marines and this dude was the pinnacle of manliness. He was gayer than Easter Sunday, but was definitely the guy every woman wanted and every man wanted to be. If all gays in the military are like him, then they need to recruit more of them!

The only problem I have with gay people are the ones who think I want to know, or even care, that they're gay. I don't really care what gender you want to have sex with, and flouting your sexual orientation way is obnoxious, whether you're gay or straight.

Let's just ban obnoxious people in the armed forces, and we'll be perfectly fine.

although i have been to gay parties and they have given me the 'i wanna fuck you' look. kind of creepy

As one of the few guys on the forums who actually likes men that way, I am extremely glad this is going to happen. Don't get me wrong, I'm not comfortable serving myself, but I have a few friends that felt this the main impediment to signing up. And yes, just like desegregating the armed services had a few years of intense turmoil after it happened, so to will this.

Got a serious question, you know how strait males will mock each other by calling one another gay? Do y'all infer that the burnee is straight as a form of mockery amongst yourselves? Confused

If you're asking if I know when straights call each other "gay" that I know the guy isn't; I'd say yeah, I get it but I would like it if that particular usage would die out. However, if I hear a group call one "fag" or similar harsh terms, it's a red flag for me to keep quiet but also watch in case things escalate to violence.

I do that too, but only because I have gay friends. I end up feeling like a scout for them.

In Ghost of Mars, they called straight people "breeders".

This is great news. We are one step closer to having "In The Navy" as the actual anthem of the navy.

The US Navy actually used it until they found out the Village People were gay.

Calling somone a "breeder" (which I have heard in some conversations) gets on my nerves about as much as calling someone "gay" does.

I think, if anything, it's progress towards better acceptance. I also like Usa's take on it.

I have mixed feelings about this. There's gonna be ups and downs... Now we just have to figure out whether the ups or the downs will be in greater values.

We will have our idiots and bigots who will cause scenes, but there are already numerous ways to report people for equal opportunity and equal right in the Navy (as I'm sure there is in other branches) I would assume this will fall right into it. People can file a grievance through there commanding officer where only he/she knows. The Navy has a ZERO Tolerance for racism, sexism, bigotry, or pretty much anything else that effects the commands climate. Events may come up, but you can guarantee that it will be dealt with swiftly and harshly. The only problem will be the people who are afraid to make that report. I know if it was someone working for me though, I would make sure I saw justice.

Pretty much this. One of my friends is gay and I could give a shit. You would never know it though, and I didn't for years. I suppose to an extent you have to let other people know that you are gay if want to meet somebody special, but there are some people that go too far promoting it. Being proud of who you are and what your are and being obnoxious are two different things.

On second thought, let's let obnoxious people in. I have a battle plan.

The first wave will be the obnoxious people. They will be called "Operation Human Shield", and they will suffer massive causalities. The second wave will be called, "Operation Get Behind The Dickheads".
