I figured one of you might be able to answer this...

So I've been playing the original LoZ a bit today, and seem to recall a hint in the manual that said something along the lines of, "where is Death Mountain? Perhaps Link can figure it out by carefully observing where and when enemies appear!"

Now I have noticed since I first played the game that enemies do appear differently in the overworld--sometimes from the side of the screen, sometimes in little clouds. Occasionally they'll already be waiting for you on the screen, and sometimes it takes then a while to show up. I've experimented a bit, but I can't seem to discern any sort of pattern, or how this would help lead a new player to Death Mountain. Anyone have any clue what that hint refers to, or how its supposed to help?

Just perused the manual. It mentioned that Death Mountain is where Ganon is and that Lynels and rocks are found guarding the area. As for the entrance, it makes no mention of how to find it. Maybe that was in the supplemental guide?

One thing in the manual that always bugged me was this "hint" along the bottom of pages 33 and 34: "In the caves where people live are invisible closed doors. How to open them? That's a secret, too."

I think this must have been a mistranslation or something, and refers to the fact that some people live in caves concealed by invisible doors. But I tried bombing the walls in every fucking cave because of this and never found a goddam thing. Bastards.

Hawk I think this is what you are thinking about:

From Page 39 & 40 of the Legend of Zelda Manual:

Quote:
Link has collected the eight fragments and completed the Triforce of Wisdom. Now he's ready to fight Ganon in the depths of Death Mountain! What is Ganon? What's Ganon like? Nobody knows. Nobody has lived to tell the tale.

Quote:
Link's no match for Ganon and his might. Whatever attack Link uses, Ganon just repels him. But if Link could only use the magical sword and some other object, he'll manage to topple the mighty Ganon. "Other object"? What's that?

Quote:
Pay attention to the rooms Link can't get to in the map. There's bound to be a hidden passageway in the rooms that Link's already passed through. Keep your eyes open!

You might be over thinking it though because they also wrote this:

From page 26 of the manual:

Quote:
All of Link's LIFE hearts turn red when he finds a Triforce fragment hidden in a labyrinth. He will also return to the labyrinth entrance. The Triforce fragments are displayed in the picture in the subscreen at each level as link finds them. Remember the magical whistle? Well, once he's collected the last Triforce fragment, Link can warp to the entrance to the ninth labyrinth by blowing the whistle and summoning the whirlwind.

You know what I just realized, I think the hint I'm thinking of isn't in the manual, its on the little hint/overworld map booklet that was packaged with it. I can't find any pics of it on the net though--anyone who still has it willing to give it a once over?

Also, while looking over the instruction manual here: http://zs.ffshrine.org/legend-of-zelda/english-instruction-manual-scans.php I just got to thinking how much I miss beautiful manuals like that. The art is just spectacular, and all of the fun little hints and background info is great. I miss that about modern games, a lot. Sad
