Goddammit! Freedom of speech only protects assholes if they are protesting against the government and no other conditions whatsoever! I am so fucking sick and tired of people defending the KKK, Nazi's, and extremist Muslims' shitheel attitudes with the 1st Amendment.

Let me break it down for you retards, if some Glenn Beck asshole walks up to Obama and says to him in a borderline threatening tone, that he doesn't like a single one of his policies/plans, that is his right. That is why the 1st amendment was established, to allow the people to raise their voices when they think the government is starting to head down a slippery slope towards corruption. If, however that same person were to go up to Obama and say "you're a Taliban hijacker," that is NOT protected by free speech and is grounds for live and immideate cannibalism.

I actually took two courses that talked about freedom of speech and there were two very distinct "exceptions" to them, the FCC bullshit not withstanding. You may have heard of them; they're called libel and slander. Libel is a written false statement that is meant to harm someone's reputation, and slander is the verbal equivalent of that. Fred Phelps, the should be rape-victim has made an entire career out of this, and he should be punished for it.

Free speech has been so twisted and distorted to the point where all it does is harm good people and assist the evil. If I can't swear ridiculously or play songs with the lines "fuck you're pissing the fuck out of us" on the radio, then the WBC has no business whatsoever pulling the shit that they do.

And that's the bottom line, cos Stone Cold said so!!

I remember when the phelps family tried to come to winnepeg to protest the funeral of a young canadian that was beheaded on the bus. If the government wasnt going to stop them then hundreds of canadians were ready to put a human barrier between the phelps and the grieving family. Fortunately the phelps are not allowed to enter Canada as they are deemed a hate group.

Groups like this are just abhorrent.

Free speech was never meant to cover things like this, at least as I understand it. It gives you the right to speak up if you think something is wrong and exists to protect the average citizen from being thrown in jail just because you dislike the government, but it should not give you the right to go around maliciously spreading hate. And make no mistake, that is all these people are doing: trying to spread hate.

Live and let live, man. I'm totally fine with letting people live however they want -even allowing this group to be hateful, malicious little jerks with their own hateful website and their own hateful signs and whatever else they do, but when their methods of living include infringing on someone else's way of life, of degrading and insulting fallen soldiers and homosexuals, then it stops being okay. This is not okay. It should never be okay.

A group similar to this -or maybe it was them, who knows- came to my college to picket a few times in the outdoor commons area, and since the university is an open campus the college officials couldn't just throw their asses out. Some guy had this huge, huge sign strapped to his back listing all the groups that were going to hell, including... well, you know, I took pictures.

Man this other dude had it totally right.

Here's some of their other signs.

I love the little thing on that last sign that says "no judging." Can they not smell their own hypocrisy?

I have lots of other photos from that day of the religious people themselves and the women from the group who brought their infants along to protest. There was also some guy with a guitar singing songs about how it's not okay to be gay. The funny thing is that students made their own signs -i have pictures of these too- saying things like "fuck the fucking fuckers," "shit we're all going to hell (it happens)," and "Jesus wants YOU.... to come to the coke party!" (it also had the address and time).

On another day the women came with their 8~10 year old daughters and had their daughters hand out pamphlets with photos of aborted fetuses preaching about how abortion is murder and any woman who gets an abortion is going to hell. Classy.

Free speech does protect against this, as it should. Freedom of speech includes freedom of offensive speech. It just doesn't cover freedom of dangerous speech (death threats, inciting a riot, etc.)

See akia, those kind of people I can deal with. If you want to be a religious nut and trumpet it to the world, that's okay with me. If you want to scream I'm going to hell, that's fine too. Hell, even if they were carrying the WBC's "thank god for dead soliders" sign there, it would make me mad yeah, but it wouldn't infuriate me.

The thing the WBC is doing that's so wrong is picketing *funerals,* and taking advantage of a family's private grief to try and send their message. Its one thing to say someone is going to hell; its another thing to tell a grieving family that their dead child is going to hell, and you're happy about it.

I have a little insane Christian people story of my own though...we had a group very much like that picketing in Balboa Park on Earth Day several years ago. They were clogging the whole street by the parking lot and there was no way around them (and I had to get to work) so I just kind of wove my way through them on foot as best I could. This one guy sees me and starts screaming at me. I ignore him and keep walking. He keeps following me and eventually actually *whacks me over the head with his sign.* Not hard, but it still pissed me off. I turn around and he screams in my face "JESUS LOVES YOU!" (I swear to god I'm not making this up.) So I grabbed his sign and threw it on the ground, and told him if he touched me or anyone else again I'd give him something to repent about.

Like the pussies all blowhards like that are he picked up his sign and slunk off. Asshole. But at least it makes a good story now.

Actually wow, can't believe I forgot this story, as it has to do with fundamentalists and heavy metal, so it's totally relevant.

There's a church in town called The Potter's House. The place is a fucking cult. They send kids out on Friday night, walking around preaching the word of God and all this. These people aren't a hate group by any means, though they can get pretty condescending.

Anyway, one night, this guy tries to spread his word and give me and my buddy pamphlets, and Geoff says, 'Sorry, we can't accept these. We've already sold our souls for rock n' roll'.

I almost felt sorry for the kid because he looked heart-broken haha

I guess my problem is I don't understand the fervor these people (religious radicals in general, not just the WBC) go into their protests with. Haven't they considered that if they went into their protests peacefully, respectfully, and rationally, that they would probably be received better than going in yelling hate and waving signs about god hating fags and being thrilled that people died? I don't understand it. Maybe they feel they aren't being heard if they aren't offending someone.

As for the WBC, I'm kind of a pacifist and I don't really approve of war, but even so I would never do something so horrifying as degrading and insulting someone who has died for this country. Wait, I think I missed why they're insulting the fallen soldiers anyway. A lot of their message doesn't make much sense to me I suppose...

It says 'Jesus Rejectors'...so that includes Jews.

Besides, if you include 'Jews', who do you take off that already full sign? I'd probably go with 'Unloving Husbands'. Being one of those isn't that bad.

The WBC is always stirring up shit, it's just what they do. They just want to get noticed and stuff like this is the best publicity for them. With the kinds of slogans they use it's pretty obvious that they're looking for a very specific type of person, everyone else is just a means to an end. Simply put they're parasites. If you try to do something about them you only carry their word farther.

It's a pretty despicable method to advertise your beliefs, but it seems to be working. Still disgusting though...
