I really want to know why they're still making these fucking movies. Alas, this is what makes money I suppose. |
Alas, it is. Here's why they keep making them.
1st Shrek movie worldwide gross: $484 million, not including home market (DVD, BluRay sales)
Production Budget: $80 million, including advertising
Shrek 2: $919 million worldwide plus $360 million home market ($1.28 billion combined)
Production Budget: $120 million
Shrek 3: $799 million worldwide plus $175 million home market ($974 million combined)
Production Budget: $160 million.
These don't even include money made off of television rights, which is another several million of profit.
You notice there's a dip between the 2nd and 3rd, which is why they likely claim this fourth movie is the last one...to drum up more attention. If Shrek Forever After makes an asston of money again though, this won't be the last one. It looks like it made a little over $70 million in the first weekend. That's not a huge number for a Shrek film (2 and 3 beat that easily), but it will still turn a big profit after the DVD and BluRay sales.
A movie generally has to make double it's budget to break even because of what theaters take out of the ticket sales. So even a piece of shit like Shrek 3 made a lot of money (approximately $700 million).
