Just got back from a midnight showing Smile

There's LOTS of action in this movie and lots of big names in it. I'm not a spoiler guy so I didn't read any nor do I want to give any away. As an action movie it's one of the best of this year.

A couple things are fairly obvious from the trailers.

War Machine got a pop from the audience when he debuted on screen. Scarlett Johansson was a big hit(I live in a college town Wink ) but wow can she kick some ass! Very Happy

For those that see it(everybody), make sure you stay until the end credits Wink

Agreed for the most part.

I would give it a 7 out of 10. It wasn't as good as the 1st one, but it's still miles better than any other comic movies not starring Batman.

The ending fell a little flat for me. It seemed like there was this huge build up to the climatic end battle and then a "poof" and it was over. It would have ranked higher for me if the battle was more epic, and closer to the Tony vs Obadiah fight from the first film.

War Machine was awesome.

I had no issues with the new Rhodie, and thought he took over the role just fine.

Mickey Rourke was a great villian, and also a huge presence on the screen. He just commands your attention.

ScarJo was decent. I haven't really liked her in anything since Lost In Translation. She did good here, and is a great addition to the cast.

Samuel L Jackson is still the f'n man. His Nick Fury is awesome. I look forward to seeing more Fury in future Marvel films. And, he needs he own film at some point.

There's already a thread for this movie, so hopefully someone can get these merged.

Seeing this in a couple of hours. I have mediocre expectations. I'm sure I'll be entertained enough though. And Scarlet Johansson....um, yeah.

I saw it earlier tonight, pretty good. I think I liked the original a little more. I really want to just see Tony Stark and less Iron-Man. Still really enjoyable. Stay until the very end, not that great of a reveal but worth it.

Seeing that weapon in the crater made my day, otherwise I'd assumed Hulk had landed and jumped off.

As for the movie itself, the showdown with the droids got a resounding clap from the way Tony finished them off (and I kinda hope they make that a new Special/Super for him in MvC3). For all Justin Hammer's bitching about not speaking Russian, I was hoping there'd be at least one exchange between Black Widow (very nice job there) and Whiplash. The one thing that bugs me from a scientific perspective is Tony not giving the new material a name, though I suspect it'd probably be called Tonium, Starkum, or something just as egocentric.

One thing I noticed was missing, but was shown in the trailers was the scene where Tony and Pepper are in the plane, Tony asks for a kiss, she kisses the suit's face plate, tosses it out the door with a "Go get 'em" and then Tony dives with a "You complete me." Also, I can't remember if they showed the bit where Tony lets some chick try a repulsor gauntlet out.

Lastly, I got a real flashback to Walt Disney with that retro footage (emphasized even more by one of the songs playing on the closing credits)

Those scenes were definitely missing in the film. I hate when trailers do this but I'm sure these will be on the DVD somewhere when it comes out later this year.

I love how they keep messing around with the Captain America shield. I believe they had it in the original too. I loved how he was like "That's just what I need to make this work and just uses it to prop the pipe up.

I also liked DJ AM being in the movie and when Tony says something like "Give me a phat beat,,,to beat my buddy's ass to." Or something along those lines.

Eh, I was underwhelmed. War Machine was a bit weak, needed more guns. Whiplash, you see the best parts of him in the trailers though his whole performance was pretty good. Still wish he had just kept his harness though. I felt that there was no reason for Black Widow to be in it at all other than "Hey look, it's Black Widow!" And I found it hilarious that literally every time she finishes a kung fu move, she slo-mo turns her head to the camera and tosses her hair.

SPOILERS ALERT:

Just got back from seeing it. I'll say this, once again Mickey Rourke blows me away. I don't know what it is about the guy, but he remains so stoic in every performance. I was so worried about how he came off in the previews that I was more than impressed when I saw him on screen.

This movie was the Rourke and Rockwell show. Some people might find it silly, but every time they brought up that bird, I laughed. In fact, me and my friend were the only ones laughing out loud to it, yet the people in the audience found it HILARIOUS (literally the biggest laugh in the film) when Fury says "I'll keep my eye on you." The thing about the Rourke and Rockwell show, I knew damn well that one or the other was going to have to die in this movie, if not both, however I do think they made the right choice, I hope to see Hammer in another movie...he was hilarious.

One more thing about that bird, I was hoping to see him get the Whiplash treatment as well. Large laser beams on his wings when he flapped them...I mean why the hell not?

Lots of action, lots of good action...except the ending. The Whiplash showdown was...what....90 seconds? So much time was spent on the decoys that it really takes away from Whiplash's big showdown, it was underwhelming.

As far as underwhelming...the after the credits was a HUGE disapointment. I think there is not another person in the Marvel universe that I would be less inspired to see than Thor. I mentioned it in the other thread but damn...I don't see this ending well. I can't see a lot of people lining up to see fucking Thor of all people.

The last thing I want to mention is one casting, and I'll try to put it as politely as possible. Let me just say that everyone did a good job in this movie and I enjoyed all the performances. However, I can't help but point out Don Cheadle. Granted, I like the guy a lot....but it's just so hard watching him because you know he's a replacement guy. Now in almost any other circumstance I would have absolutely no problem with someone jumping into a role to fill that someone dropped out on (and will even say I much prefer Cheadle to Terrence Howard by about a million times). But the thing is...THEY LOOK NOTHING ALIKE. Not even close...I guess the one thing that both have going is that they're both black, but I just had such a hard time overlooking how ridiculous this was, I've never liked it when movies do this, and while I don't fault anyone involved (except for Terrence Howard...big fuck you, buddy!) I just wish that maybe they could've done a better casting as far as look alikes. Again, Cheadle is an amazing and underrated actor, this is not a jab at him, just a thought I had.

Also, Don Cheadle is way to skinny to fill out an Iron Man suit the way he does. When he has the faceplate up his head looks TINY.

Completely agree. What pisses me off even more is the fact that Mandarin was supposed to be in this movie, but Favreau thought he was "too fantastical." Then he drops fucking Thor on us? Fuck you Favreau.

Also, I think Howard was released from the movie against his will

He wanted the same payday as Downey Jr. which is completely stupid. He should be lucky they put him in the first one considering I've always considered him very underwhelming, so I can see why they removed him.

Yeah, I just didn't buy Cheadle as War Machine. Out of the suit he was...okay. But I just think Howard and Downey had FAR better chemistry than these two, and would have made a far better team.

Also, although it was inevitable, this movie really lacked the sense of discovery and joy that the first one had. I mean, aside from the opening skydiving scene and the scene with Stark working to discover his new element (okay, and the *SPOILER* Cap Shield moment, which was INSPIRED) it just wasn't as much FUN. Still a great movie though.

You know the thing that bugged me most about that bird? Well, first let me start off by pointing out that I have two cockatiels of my own, and I'm pretty knowledgeable about parrot species in general. But the bird in the movie had very clearly been ripping feathers out of its chest--its easy to see the bare patches. Parrots do this when they are extremely sad, or very emotionally stressed. I can't imagine why they would pretend it was doing that--or how they would create that look with makeup. This leads me to believe that the poor bird really was in a lot of pain/under a lot of stress during the shoot. And that made me very sad, and very angry.

But then again, supposedly the SPCA was on site monitoring all animal issues and such, so I dunno...maybe the effect was digital? But why would they go through the expense of creating something so subtle? I don't get it.

Either way, I hope the bird's alright.

Well the end credits said that no animals were hurt during the filming of the movie. Apparently it's supposedly Rourke's bird...so who knows. Maybe the bird stressed because of having too many people around or something.

Favreau isn't directing Thor, he was obviously told to insert that at the end. Kenneth Branagh is the director on Thor.

Found a review with an interesting take away from the film:

Jay Naylor wrote:
Iron Man 2 was surprising. I went in with low expectations, despite the fact that I liked the first one "well enough". I'd read a few "eh" reviews of the movie from some others beforehand. What most surprised me was the undercurrent that caused the problems with the tough-guy villain to truly get out of control: The Government's interest in seizing Stark's property, the product of his mind and work. It wasn't a shadowy, immoral, unaccountable government entity that took Stark to task. It was a Senate committee, represented by Senator Stern. The concept of them just taking a man's property because they think they really need it is so ingrained and even accepted in our society, that Marvel didn't have to conjure up a fake quasi-legal shadow operation bent on going beyond the law to get what they wanted. The real villains exist right there, in congressional seats, backed up by expressions of public need, using political pressure to try to get their victims to give up what is rightfully theirs. I liked Stark's line, in his defense about how the suit was the same as him. I don't know if the writers of the movie thought deeply enough to know how this truth extends to all property, but it was good enough for me, considering the source. Justin Hammer, competing defense contractor and the man with the most pull within the Senate Armed Services Committee, is Stark's Orren Boyle. He's Microsoft's Netscape. Unable to compete freely and openly with a man of Stark's competence, he uses his government connections and influence to push for making Stark's technology available to him, and when that fails, he resorts to deceit and crime. He might have had more luck if he'd worked with the FTC instead of the SASC.

Otherwise, Robert Downy Jr. makes a great Tony Stark. And Scarlett Johansson is a very foxy operative. Plus, there are enough references to the future Avengers projects to make the average Marvel fan cream in his nerd slacks. There are some picky things I noticed. With the exception of War Machine, the suits and drones in the film looked a little plastic in the close-up shots. Captain America's half-completed shield looked very plastic as parts wobbled and vibrated when it was being manipulated in a brief comical scene where it was employed. Considering what it was, they should have done a better job on this.

I grew up with a cockatiel that my family bought from the classifieds, and she was an absolute sweetheart. She tore her feathers out though to the point she was bald where she could reach, and there was nothing we could do to get her to stop. She was like this before my family bought her too, so it wasn't the new environment that upset her. Perhaps the other family she was bought from was neglectful, but she led a good life with us. She was showered with attention and was only caged in the evening or when an outside door needed to be propped open. She was very loving, but never quit with the feathers. Perhaps that was the case there. Perhaps it was rescued and never got over the nervous habit.

As for the movie it was enjoyable enough, but nowhere near as good as the first. I agree with some reviews that said it was like an advertisement for the Avengers at times, but it was still fun though. Also, the final battle with Whiplash seemed way too anti-climatic for the battle that proceeded it. Beyond that I had fun.
