I haven't even played the first one, but besides the camera the score is what puts me off about it.

I'm pretty sure he means the "vented" cuts into the plastic that are obscured on the outside by the paper cover inside the sleeve. They're doing it with movies as well so don't think it's just game companies doing this.

It's absolutely ridiculous. I would much rather they just change the plastic cases to cardboard or tin or something, this just looks very tacky and doesn't really help anything. In fact I find it funny they put a recycling logo on there, considering you can't technically recycle these.

As far as the game goes, I played through for a short while and it's alright so far. My head is killing me so I can't really sit down and play that much at this time.

It's a money-saving step, and supposedly an environmentally-conscious move. They do it because it uses less plastic. As Sathien pointed out, DVDs and BluRays do this as well. They are more flimsy, but at the end of the day it's not that big of a deal.

That case design has been pretty much standard for games since late last year. My only gripe with it is that it makes the artwork more susceptible to damage since there's nothing supporting it in the cut out areas, but as long as you handle your games with care, it isn't a big deal.

To stay on topic: The entire SMG2 soundtrack has been uploaded to Youtube by the composer himself:

Very cool.

The music was one of the best parts of the original!

Sorry, the orchestral score doesn't do it for me. Seems to "Starfoxy". Although, the music for New Super Mario Bros. is also horrible. We need something as good as Super Mario 64's score.

This is my opinion based on several hours of gameplay.

My only gripe with the game is that so far 3 stars is the max i've seen in levels. So far its been typically 1 mission star, feed a Luma to open up a new area, and a shooting star. This really doesn't make for much desire to explore the area since there is nothing really to find except easily acquired 1-ups and starbits/coins. I have Worlds 1 and 2 completely finished with Mario so hopefully luigi has different missions compared to Mario.

I really enjoy the renditions of the old school songs, especially when they are not expected. Brings back a lot of nostalgia. The game itself is fun regardless, and I enjoy not having to run all over the "ship" to find the area with the galaxy I was missing stars in like SMG1.

The end.

@Char, you are insane, this is one of the best Mario soundtracks I have heard. They all just ooze with Mario style and flavor.

Of course it sounds a bit "Starfoxy", he is in Outer Space.

Also, Yoshi is awesome in this game. I mean, I knew he was going to be fun, but using him is for more satisfying than I would have originally guessed.

I've been playing on and off...and I gotta say...I still enjoy the original more. Like Douche said, it's very disapointing to play a level and be done with it after 3 or 4 stars. Once again, they implement a lot of time trials, which while not difficult, it does kill my mood to play. Every galaxy seems to have a boss unless it's a gimmick level. I'm at the Castle in the 3rd World and decided to go back and get most of the Prankster Comets, I also don't like Planet Mario that much, the system last time was much more interesting to explore. I also just hate the map.

The main reason I REALLY dig this game is all the retro love. By far, this game represents the old franchise gone 3D better than any of the previous titles. Shit, in games like SMW you would only visit a level once or twice and honestly that's all you need. There are still like 240 stars to collect, IMO this just means there will be more levels to visit (which is a plus).

Also, I feel that Starship Mario is much more fun and has far more character than the hub world of the last game. At least with SM you gather little item trophies and little friends from the various galaxies join you along the way. The hub world in the last game felt very disconnected IMO, it just didn't feel much like you were going through space. In this one each cluster of galaxies are linked by worm holes that open after defeating the respective castle, this results in a more linear feel that actually gives me the feeling like I am traveling through the Universe.

But yea, there is just so much retro love in this game, it is essentially a fanboy's dream. We get Hammer Brothers (among other classic enemies), remixed classic tunes, Yoshi. It's all just pretty awesome. So far this is one of my favorite Mario games of all-time.

I would have to say Nintendo could not have done much better.

EDIT: I forgot to mention just how fucking seamless all of the 2D to 3D transitions are, truly flawless. Also, most of the original tunes I have heard for this game have been pretty impressive thus far, truly shit on par with Final Fantasy.

As I was playing just now, this one in particular caught my ear.

It's the Space Storm Galaxy in World 5.

I haven't finished Galaxy 1 yet. If I start Galaxy 2, will I have major plot points spoiled for me?

Absolutely not, the story is even more down-played in the new one, they aren't even really tied together. Overall the gameplay is a bit superior in Galaxy 2 so I wouldn't worry about diving right in. Although I must admit, I am a bit shocked you haven't finished SMG1.

Have you seen the list of video games I own? I haven't finished a lot of them. Between work, MTG, the forums, Facebook, Twitter, and the site in general, there's simply not enough time left in my life to finish the games I own.

Fair enough, and I have heard of your fabled and colossal Wii collection.

Still SMG is quite an epic. I would advise just starting 2 though.

Don't let him off the hook that easily.

Syd, SMG1 was fantastic and culturally relevant to your site. If you have the capability to complete it you really should.

My idea was to play through both simultaneously, switching it up as I get stuck on various stars in either one. I have this compulsive need to collect the stars in the order they become available to be me, rather than move on to potentially easier ones, hence my incompletion of the game.

I have the same compulsion. I collected all of the stars with Mario and then Luigi. While it wasn't always easy, it was a hell of a lot of fun.

It's funny, because although I'll have to play through a game like that, I'm also easily distracted by other games and consoles.

I unlocked everything in TvC in like 2 days. Unlocked like half the guys in SF4. Haven't touched SSF4 at all because there are no characters to unlock.
