If you're like me (or anyone else here, for that matter), you can't walk into an 'arcade' nowadays without cringing at the sight of no classic arcade games. However, on a recent escapade to a town somewhat close to mine, I have discovered a veritable treasure chest of arcade games (and some barely known related things)... Prepare yourself for a magical pixelated journey through memory lane.

First, we have the Super Mario Bros. Pinball Game. Personally, this is the first I've even seen it, but I'm sure it was very popular when it came out. Unfortunately, I was unable to gain any information on it (you've failed me yet again, Google and Wikipedia) beyond the fact that it was developed by the company Gottlieb, which also developed Q-Bert. So I'll be content to let you all stare at it in wonder.

Also, sorry for the big ass picture. Couldn't find a better one.

Second, we have Tetris. Need I tell you what you already know about this revolutionary game?

Next up, William's Line Drive. Pretty self explanitory, it's a baseball based game where a small metal ball comes out of a slot in the table and towards a 'bat' that shoots it up into a basket or into some pockets that all say so many bases or out. As you gather runs and bases, little men above the basket for homeruns will run in accordance with the pocket you hit. I was unable to gather any more information on this one, either. I guess the internet doesn't care for old games. Curse you, interwebs.

Fourth is the shoot 'em up defining Commando. With it's vertical scrolling gameplay, coupled with unlimited ammo and kick-ass grenades, this game set the standard for such favorites as Contra. Oh, and say 'SUPER JOE' if you never got tired of shooting that officer in the back at the end of each level.

Image

Last, but CERTAINLY not least, we have the cult classic Donkey Kong. This game was one of the great spurs in Nintendo history, and without it, video games as we know it would probably not exist. Consisting of four different levels (or heights, I guess you'd call them), this game is relatively short, but unbelievably frustrating. After an hour of pumping quarters into the machine, I stopped trying to get past 25 meters after thwarting Donkey Kong for a first time. Go me.

These are the classic arcade games I have found. All lovely in their own special ways... but I love Donkey Kong the best. Although I must say, fuck you Pauline. Get some pepper spray, you selfish old hag.

Atari's arcade version of Tetris is awful. I can forgive one button control, but the stiff joysticks make it impossible to get anything done. The only arcade Tetris worth playing is the Grand Master series.

I'm not a bad enough dude, but I am an edgy little shit. I'll do what I can.

Yeah, that was one of the major drawbacks. Although, if you got used to it, that glitch where you could have infinite time to decide where to put your block was available, and I just call bullshit on that one. I've lost so many friendly competitions because of it.

That SMB pinball machine looks way too new, when I was younger I don't remember any of the pinball machines having that LCD display like the new ones do now.

Starship Troopers is one of the coolest pinball machines I've seen. I miss seeing those but I guess a lot of owners just don't maintain them.

Maybe I'm just not from the correct generation, but I've never been able to enjoy pinball. It's always a oh I see MVC2 and House of the Dead are all taken, and I'm sure as fuck not playing Dance Dance Fruitalution, and the goddamn pcman cabinet is out of ourder, so I guess I'll play pinball... *sigh* situation... Confused

It's actually a Dot Matrix Display, which isn't LCD. and it was one of the first machines to use this type of display.

It's from 1992, screw that noise. I don't think I have ever even played a pinball machine that new.

I think the best pinball machines I've played would be either Mars Attacks! or (I kid you not) Star Wars Episode I: the Phantom Menace.

Wasn't Phantom Menace the one with the huge mirror in the back of the table?

I wish I could walk into arcade. I think our last arcade shut its doors some years ago. In the 90s there were plenty. Sad

I was in a youth bowling league every saturday morning when I was a kid. Video games ran our lives so in between turns we would run over to the arcade just watch the demo/intros of the games. I was lucky to have 2 dollars in quarters to spend at the arcade while waiting for my Mom to pick us up.

I think Players Choice Ten was my favorite since it was loaded with some of my favorite NES games. Others include:
Double Dragon
Bad Dudes
Dungeons and Dragons-Tower of Doom
Prisoners of War
The Simpsons Arcade Game

I'm sure there were others, but that's all I can think of now. Sucks that arcardes aren't around anymore like they used to be.

No, I don't think I will fuck Stummies.

I went to Funspot in New Hampshire, which claims to be the largest arcade in the world (I call bullshit), as well as to have the largest collection of classic arcade games (I think that's legit). The entire upper floor is crammed fill of like 250 old games, they actually got a non-profit charter and call it a museum.

Fun stuff, particularly playing some older games I always wanted to, but never did (Phoenix and Vs. SMB)

Yep, it also had a big hologram thing. Or maybe the hologram was the mirror, I'm not entirely sure.

God. I don't know how many quarters I've sunk into The Simpsons. Incredibly fun.
