Let us lay it out for you: in 2008, Square Enix released Dragon Quest Swords for Wii, a game based entirely around using the Wii Remote to simulate a sword. It used the normal Wii Remote/Nunchuk setup. Now, Square Enix is preparing a Wii port of Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory, an arcade game based on collectible cards. For that, peripheral company Hori is producing a controller shaped like a sword.
The optional controller, first shown off on VJump magazine's staff blog, features an exact replica of the arcade machine's layout, including two giant buttons and a replica sword hilt, which players push down to activate special attacks. The controller will retail for ¥12,800 ($137) and will be out in Japan this summer. Keep an eye on your favorite import retailer if you've been waiting for a controller with part of a sword sticking out of it. |
Sounds like the next Steel Battalion to me. Though at least that had a sequel.

Will we see this stateside? I will buy it, if so. Also, a sequel was announced last year.
I imported Dragon Quest Kenshin, the no-console-needed game that inspired Dragon Quest Swords, but I can't justify importing a Japanese Wii just to play Battle Road.

Wow... what a waste of money.
That thing looks like it would be worth about $30, and even at that, it looks cheap and sad.

YOU LOOK CHEAP AND SAD!
It's a replica of an arcade counter. A Hori fight stick generally retails for $80-100. $137 for something slightly bigger is perfectly reasonably. Also, the Hori fight sticks are damn heavy, so I can only guess how heavy this is.

So something didn't add up in my head when you mentioned that it should be heavy.
I took another look at the image, which looked like cheap ass plastic crap. It turns out that if you look at the full sized image, it is a drawing.
I still say it is worth less than $137, but I'll reserve complete judgment until I can see a picture of the real thing. It may be better or worse than a drawing.
Here are the two images for reference:

It's also designed with a single game in mind. It was hard enough to justify purchasing a TE stick knowing that I would use it strictly for fighting games and little else since most other games require a second analog stick. Good news is that I play almost all fighting games these days!
Replica or not, $137 is a lot of scratch for something that may end up in the closet next to your Sega Activator in a week or so.

Quite true. But Dragon Quest is insanely popular in Japan, much more so than Final Fantasy, to the point where Enix were the ones who saved Square's nearly-bankrupt asses with the merger.
As for expensive peripherals, that is the way the market is moving.
I don't have huge hopes that we'll see this DQ game in America, but it will absolutely sell in Japan.

I wish it were that way here. Final Fantasy quickly deteriorated into crap after VII. Dragon Quest is still an actual RPG.
