I was thumbing through one of the recent Nintendo Power magazines and I saw Morrigan in the table of contents and I got excited. I shouldn't have. The DS is not getting a DarkStalkers game. What they are getting is a SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS. Whoop-de-fucking-doo.

If only the PSP had a decent d-pad to make playing their fighting games worthwhile...

I have no problem with it, and I've been playing street fighter alpha 3 max like a fiend.
if you really wanna get picky, there are five minute mods that make the D pad even better.

They should release a new one, though, not a rehash. They need to update those goddamn sprites, already.

Exactly! That Classic Gaming site Kojjiro linked to in the Internets forum just did an article on the series. The closest thing to a new sprite they've done is Dee's (Donovan's head on Dmitri's body). CAPCOM obviouslly doesn't think a Darkstalkers/Vampire Hunter revival is worth the effort.
As an aside, I'm the kind of geek that would love a game like what Syd said the DS is actually getting. I just need to get a DS first.

SNK Card Fighters or whatever the fuck it was called for Neo Geo Pocket was amazing. Seriously, check it out.

they will never redo ther sprites. all of the guys that worked on darkstalkers and street fighter left a long time ago. the most you will ever see is the slight retooling of sprites like they did in capcom fighting jam.

I've owned maximum impact maniax, and found it to be awful. I won't touch the sequel.

I enjoyed Max Impact.
Can't wait for KOF XII.
They wanna say that they wanna create "The ultimate fighting game" with XII, and ALL of the chars' sprites will be redrawn.

Yeah, there's that. But at this point, I'd even settle for another shitty EX game. EX 3 wasn't that bad.

The KoF team figured out how to make money out of the thing. They used to make one about once a year, keeping people fresh. New characters are added on a regular basis, and favorites are benched for a period. So that means if you like a given character or want to try them all, you'll have to pick up several different versions. If your hesitant about new characters, a few old standbyes are always present. The game itself is a work in progress, so new gameplay ideas can be tryed without having to reinvent the game every time. KoF also seems to have a broader appeal worlwide, as the designer interviews stated that the characters May Lee and Ramon were created with the Korea and South American markets respectively in mind (so they hate south america?).
And for some reason, I'm genuinely interested in playing as Duck King.

I have a few XI and NGBC cahracters in my mugen. duck king is a lot of fun. he beats teh shit out of people by break dancing, just like in the original fatal fury.
I liked the wire attacks that they had in KOF 2000 and 01 alot, where you could bounce your opponent off the wall, but I hated the striker system. The tag system and faster gameplay implimented in 2003 is my favorite so far.

Black guy, mohawk, a counter character with some of the worst looking supers ever? Yeah, not my favorite either.
Anyway, my favorite KoF is 98. Its got all of the characters I grew up with, the characters I really like, its pretty simple, and the HDMs are exactly what I want; a 13 second beatfest that usually takes off about half of a characters health. Its like a fatality you can use in combat.
I'm also partial to 2002. I've not gotten to try 2003 yet, my local EB doesn't have it in stock and I'm tired of trying to play using a keyboard.
