Time to Bitch. I'm active duty Military (Navy) and if your not familiar, we two diffrent types of tours. Sea Duty (On a ship. Duh) and after your first enlistment at Sea, then Shore Duty (Attached to a Base doing Bullshit for 3 years, a good break from spending almost a soild 4 of 5 years actually out at sea). I am currently in the latter. Numerous Nights are spent (including tonight) sitting at a desk, with, a phone to answer (if someone does something stupid out in town and gets in trouble, most nights you won't get a single call), and being the only person in the building for 6 hours. Well, if you give someone a computer while waiting for this phone to ring, what would you expect them to do? Surf the internet. That would be fantastic, if the computer's internet didn't have a program to BLOCK EVERY FUCKING WEBSITE INVOLVING ANYTHING WORTH LOOKING AT. The exception is this site. I'm not 100% but i'm pretty sure the program picks up key words and then blocks the site. "Games" Being the one key word that effects me the most. Being that a good 50% if not more of this site is about games, I have no clue how it slipped through. Also, I'm pretty sure that they block popular websites by name. But, They leave Facebook.com the most popular Social Website, Unblocked. MySpace, which I'm pretty sure no one uses anymore, Blocked. I understand the idea behind the blocking of these sites, its to keep me "honest and working" especially since its your Tax Dollars funding me surfing the internet. But when I have a 6 hour shift, complete whatever bullshit paperwork I have in Hour 1, am I suppose to stare at the wall for 5 hours? No, Fuck that. I'm going online. I apologize for this mindless rant, but I needed to vent after discovering my GameFly webpage was blocked, but my NetFlix wasn't. Fucking Dumb.

Yay, more military people. That makes three, yes?
I remember being behind blocked internet. It sucked. They did eventually block this site. took them a lot longer to figure out how to block the chat client though.
Try Youtube if you can. Good way to kill time.

Absolutely not. I've even aged out of the draft. I'd like to call myself a "conscientious objector", but the more accurate term is "wuss".
We do have a couple around, though. SoldierHawk is Army, and Ash Burton is...Marines, I think?

I know how old the bunny is
And Atma, if your really don't care what they have to say about that web blocker I have two suggestions
One is if it's a computer based program. And the other if it's a network based
If it's a computer thing run the services.exe utility ( it's in C:\Windows\system32 ) and make it full screen. Then start looking through the descriptions until you see one that says something along the lines of "something proxy service". Just double click on that then stop the service.
^That's actually how I get past the McAfee web blocker :p
If it's a network based proxy then your going to have to find a online proxy. I can't help you much there seeing as my school got smart and blocked any page that has the words like "proxy", or "anonomyzer" in the pages META tags

Can you get in trouble for tampering with / disabling / subverting their preset security measures?

Don't wink at me you rapscallion! Wondering if it might be safer to approach someone higher up and say Dude I'm totally fucking board and this site keeps me laughing which keeps me awake and alert to do my job, check it out no porn or nothing, can I go there when it gets slow around here?
Also if they OK it or you do find a way around their filter you'll probably want to edit this thread.

Yeah, tampering with the security measures on a US Military computer. Won't get in any trouble.

Good call Atma. I'm lucky that this site isn't blocked at work, but everytime you try and show me videos, there's this gross white square

Hoo-rah Sailor.
If you're buddies with your IT guy, absolutely take advantage of that. That's how I'm able to visit this (and other entertainment) site while on base. The nice thing about the stupid filters is that they block SO much, the IT guy can, if questioned (which is unlikely since nobody cares enough to keep track of which individual account or computer is blocked and which isn't), that a legitimate site you needed to do your job was being blocked.
That's how my guy did it anyway.

I got out of the Air Force a couple months ago. So I guess we have all 4 branches represented now. Except Coast Gaurd but I was never really sure if they were considered Military or not.

Hacker, what on earth would make you think it is a good idea to fuck with the US Government's web filter?
Atma, are you allowed to use a personal device while on shift? I would suggest a 3G based device such as a smart phone or iPad. Also, talking to your IT person would be a great way to avoid any chance of getting in trouble.

They're officially a branch of the armed forces, and operate under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security, unless the Prez or Congress decided to put them under the command of the Navy in wartime.
Sha-sha!
