But the manuals have the instructions on how to turn the game on! If you can't do that, then you can't get to the in game tutorial!

Yeah i still like to read manuals and in recent years every time i pick one up i always think about how people just people just stick the game in and play.. which was not the case when i was a kid.

Though ditching manuals... to be honest now i don't really care. The games manuals now or at least ubisofts are so woeful that they won't be missed. Like most people said it's like 7 pages in two languages - how to turn on the console/put the game in etc.

All the work of manuals is now done in game which i feel is a shame since the manuals to me were always a part of the experience of playing a game.

This could of course could be linked to now how games are generally a lot easier considering how they baby you through the game while back in the day it was pick up, play, fall down hole, try to solve problem.

Hell i have some games from back then that came with full on maps and stuff.. you don't get that so much these days, maybe GTA4 but hey at least it's only ubisoft doing it.

Besides i read this on another forum when i heard this first announced... Ubisoft are probably taking the eco-friendly road but in fact are just doing it to save money. I would reckon that ubisoft are saving a lot more in printing fees than in the number of trees saved.

I do geography and i should be all for what they are doing but i disagree to an extent. Trees are renewable and if you abide by the rule of plant a tree for every tree you knock down there's no real problem - of course they take time to grow but still besides you can also recycle paper.. they could just have easily decided to print their manuals on recycled paper..

All hints more to the saving money - cutting corners route.

I remember three shining examples of fantastic manuals, Baldur's Gate II, which had extensive spell listings, skill listings, and other fantastic information, Final Fantasy III for SNES, which was 70 pages of RPG goodness, and Daggerfall, which I remember staying up late reading about the intricacies of each race and the ways to make your own class. On the other hand, the worst manuals I've ever seen were the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare one, which was pretty much "Here's how you shoot people, now look at the cocky bastards who made this game", Two Worlds, which wasn't surprising since that was an awful game in every way, and the manual made me feel ill, and Half Life 2, which, well, didn't have one.
