It is yesterday's news, but freedom of speech is the primary topic here. The App store is the moral police and they will tell you what you can and cannot purchase for apps on their products. This isn't about pornography at all, but rather the right to choose the content that you wish to view and not to have it chosen for you.

Parental controls seem to be the obvious solution to this type of issue.

What I don't understand is that the damn thing has an unrestricted web browser. What is to stop someone from watching porn through the web browser?

I am not sure if this makes Jobs feel like a good guy or what, but it is stupid beyond belief and he comes across as an over protective parent. Guess what... the kids always rebel.

I don't have a problem with a company self-censoring. It's the same as cable channels censoring their own programs...the FCC has no jurisdiction over cable networks, so they could theoretically show hardcore porn if they wanted. But they don't because that's not the business they want to be in.

Likewise, Jobs doesn't want to be in the business of porn apps. The free market is working well here...people who want porn apps can just buy another product.

And like you pointed out, he's not blocking web access to porn sites on his phone...just apps.

If you're so desperate for porn that you're looking at it on your phone, you've got bigger problems.

I think that's how blind guys get their porn.

I agree with this to a T. The free market has a way of deciding which business practices are hit or miss.

As if I needed yet another reason to get an Android-powered phone.

Also what Klimbatize said. There has to be standards on such a lucrative field like the App Store, else we have chaos. That said, I don't think porn is the biggest problem with it at the moment.

Again, agreeing with Klim. Apple has every right to decide what they do and do not want to sell.

I agree as well. This is no different than any other company choosing software for its device/console, such as Nintendo and their glorious Seal of Quality:

Apple doesn't make any money from the use of the browser so it's not an issue. If they sold porn apps on the iStore or whatever, then Apple would be making money from porn which I imagine would be an issue with investors and the general public. It's like the difference between selling a empty picture frame and a picture frame with two girls and a double-headed horse getting to know each other in it.

Don't use the Apple iPhone.....

I find the Android a better OS anyway since its for people who know what they are doing. Apple people can't think for themselves so let Steve guide them.

People shouldn't be watching meat slappin on their phones, just look at all the douche nozzles that cause car wrecks while texting or talking, it would be twice as worse if a fatal collision turned out to be due to excessive pocket polo at 60+ mph on the freeway.

Patrick Norton had a great comment about this on his Twitter:

Would somebody please tell Steve Jobs there's a porn app on the iPhone? It's called "Safari" and Apple wrote it. http://tcrn.ch/c2zJDa

Personally I don't own a smart phone or a phone with internet/tv/video/web embedded yet.

If I did, I certainly wouldn't use it to download adult material. Still, when I eventually do get a better phone, I can tell you that I would look for the one that offers me as much personal freedom as possible. I understand that Apple has every right to be restrictive with their services based on any bias that they so choose. I am simply put off by the idea that they would content filter for the American public.

To me, it portrays the attitude that Apple thinks they know what is best for people. It may be a smart commercial stance, but personally I find it offensive and I'll be avoiding their product. Once again, they have every right to make this choice, I just think it is a bad one.

Why do you think this?

If Blockbuster doesn't sell porn movies, does it mean they have that attitude? No. It just means they don't want to sell porn, just like any other business may decide to not sell any commodity. You're free to take your business elsewhere, of course, but every merchant has the right to decide what products they want to sell.

The similarity between Blockbuster and Apple exists in the choice of what to sell. However the difference is that Apple controls both the store and the device itself. On the other hand Blockbuster only controls the store.

You're choosing to avoid their products because of their business practices, and that's your right. Just as it is their right to sell and not sell whatever the want. If they were to make a business decision that bothered enough people, then maybe they'd see a change in sales large enough to warrant reconsideration of their policy. That's how it works.

Nobody is infringing on any rights here. In the original post, it was stated that freedom of speech was the primary topic here. It's important to truly understand what 'freedom of speech' guarantees you. It guarantees that your right to speak freely will never be prohibited by the GOVERNMENT--you won't be arrested or jailed for exercising this right.

However, freedom of speech does not mean that you can say anything at any time and suffer no consequences. You may very well suffer civil consequences from your fellow citizens, such as protests, boycotts, or on a smaller level losing your job. If you're a news anchor and you go on the air and talk about how moronic your boss is, and then you get fired because of it...your freedom of speech has not been trampled on. The government didn't fire you, your boss did. And he'd be justified in doing so.

Having the inability to download a porn app on a product is not a freedom of speech issue.

Personally I find the Iphone to be shit regardless of content.
You can't send pictures despite how easily it could, any songs put on it MUST be in the itunes format.
And its hard drive isn't accessible without a third-party program such as iphonebrowser

I've only used a droid once (guy in one of my classes had one) and I find to be beter than an Itouch or Iphone
