The Obama administration has sounded out Microsoft's main man, CEO Steve Ballmer, on the possibility of the company producing a video game which would task players with balancing the US budget.
Not as fun as tearing up a desert nation looking for weapons of mass destruction, I agree, but it's just as important.
Erskine Bowles, who has been tasked by President Obama with finding ways to get the United State's budget back out of the red, envisages the game as being a simple one, "that would enable anyone with a computer to take a stab at balancing the budget". So, something flash-based, then, a web game.
You have to wonder whether the game would be a PR stunt, showing how hard it is to balance a nation's books, or whether the administration may want to take a good look at its best performers, see if there's something to be learned.

Only Nintendo could make balancing the budget fun.
Obama's idea of balancing the budget is probably somewhere along the lines of Katamari or Pac-Man. Take take take! All the money! All for the government!

Cut the military budget in half, and let them earn their stuff the old-fashion way: Pillaging thier victims' homes.

And this brings up a question. It's one thing to balance the budget, but will the game include possible consequences to cutting certain portions? Like, if you get someone that says, "All this money on education. Cut this in half"...does it show years down the road where America slips even further behind other countries in terms of education? If we cut major sections of the military budget, how do they show the consequences of that? A lot of those effects are up for debate, so it's obviously going to be slanted.
I'm probably reading into it too much. It'll probably be a freaking spreadsheet that you try to balance simply to show how tough the job is.

They already have a balance-the-budget game. It's called SimCity. Just lock all the SimCity cheats, and have them play SimCity 2000 or later.

It'll also use WiiSpeak so that you can teleconference with your Cabinet and debate the budget.
