You know, every library I've been to has never let the fines go above a certain limit (10 bucks or so), and the one time I lost a book, they waived the fine and made me pay the replacement cost.
So these "Huge multi-year fine for a book" stories always stuck me as a bit off.

Well, they didn't have computers back then so it was all paper documents.
Those are a bit harder to keep track of

No, the point is there is a max late fee, usually the cost of the book. So it's dumb to say he owes $300K. All they did was take the cost of late fees and calculated them to like 210 years. In reality he'd probably only have to pay a small fee. Keeping track of checked out books using paper or a computer has nothing to do with it. It's just to make a lame story.

They just did it for a cheap laugh. Can you blame them, though? I would imagine that their job is not very exciting.

How dare us elect a man who is so brashly disrespectful to our literary heritage?

We didn't.
Fun fact: The electoral college was set up because it was the answer to the question, "How can we completely guaran-fucking-tee that George Washington wins?"
