Alot of people complain that some games are too easy, and then you have people like me complaining that certain games are too hard. So that got me to thinking, what games are not too easy, not too hard, they're just right?

Contra III.
No, I'm not lying. The game is easy in comparison to Hard Corps and Shattered Soldier. To me it's a positive for it though.

I rather like hard games when they do the hard aspect right. Battletoads did it right, among others.

Challenging at first but beatable with practice, and never truly cheap if you've played it enough. If I die in Battletoads now, it's usually my fault, not the game's.

GTA Vice City
Had maybe 4 missions that were pretty darn hard and the rest seemed to present a challenge but never to the effect where you have to try 5 or 6 times.
San Andreas on the other hand, I'd say about 1/6 of the game is unfair, especially that Red Baron mission.

I'm playing Batman: Arkham Asylum on normal right now and it's about what I'd call "fair." Normal thugs are a breeze, but some bosses and some of the later game groups of guys spread around large rooms make me want to pull my hair out. I did this one room with seven armed guys in it and all the gargoyles were booby trapped so no easy hiding from guys after knocking one out. I must have tried like fifteen times, once getting it down to one last guy before getting killed before i FINALLY managed to get everybody down.

Since the aspects of difficulty vary between genre, I've split mine into various catagories.
RPG: Tales of Symphonia
3D Platformer: Prince of Persia 2007
2D Platformer: Earthworm Jim 2
FPS: Bioshock
3D Fighter: Soul Calibur 2
2D Fighter: Guilty Gear XX^Core
Adventure (Zelda style): Ocarina of Time (Except for the Water Temple)

In terms of completing all clearing all the levels on the hardest non-customizable difficulty and unlocking all the cheats.

I'd go with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. It took me months (maybe years?) to beat that game. Beating every boxer was a system of trail and error, learning their patterns. You'd do a little better each time, until finally you could beat him consistently. Then on to the next opponent. Beating Mike Tyson was difficult and something worth bragging about, but very doable if you had the patience and persistence.

I like a game that is challenging, but allows you to continue so you don't have to play through the earlier, easier stages again to get to the point where you died. For a challenging game you should have to fail at least a few times, but with practice an average gamer should be able to complete it. It should also be hard through game play alone and not bad design or poor programming. The original Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania are good examples of that to me.
Of course the game should also be fun too. Without that everything else is meaningless.

Most of the Nintendo branded super titles for the Wii were very well balanced.
Super Mario Galaxy
Zelda Twilight Princess
Metroid Prime 3
None of them were blatantly easy, they all made you think a bit about what you were doing, but all were possible to complete.
I will say this though. Zelda's final battle was stupid. Any game where you have to hit a button at a specific time to trigger an event is stupid. I am thinking very specifically about every boss battle in the Prince of Persia Two Thrones game.

thats most of god of war as well.
in terms of just right difficulty, barneys hide & seek game they had on the sega channel ages ago. for the age bracket it was meant for, it was great, since there was no way a kid could lose at that game.

Demon's Souls. I'm a bit masochistic, alright, but the game's never unfair with you. It's pretty easy to die, which forces you to start over w/o your collected souls, and if you die again then you lose them forever... but the game's so well made, you KNOW exactly why you died, and you try to correct that. And when you do, presto, you've gotten better at the game. It rewards careful observation and a cool mind rather than button mashing. Always a winner in my books.

I never had any problems with the helicopter mission. The RC airplane mission, though......christ. That was a fucking unholy bitch. And none of the cheat codes could help you.
