VII was the first game to keep me up till 4:30 in the morning only to wake up at 7 and keep it going, so it gets my vote.
Also, somebody asked about XI. I played that game for about 3 and a half years, and it was addicting in the same way that I imagine WoW is. But, it being an MMO, you just have to dedicate too much fucking time when you're high level. I kicked that game about 3 years ago, but I have to admit I had a lot of fun playing it.

I went with seven. I play FF-games for story, and this one just nails it. It was also my first FF, and one of the strongest gaming exiences of my childhood. Therefore, I end up comparing every other FF to VII. Anyway, most of the series is awesome. XIII is one of the reasons I have to get a new console soon, no matter how the critics bash it. I've disagreed with those bastards more than once!

Yeah, most of the reviews have been in favor. This one is pretty negative though.

I liked VII. It was a little overrated, but still good. Overrated does not mean crap. It means, just what the word says, overrated. And still VII is only slightly overrated, I still think it's a very good game. I think X may be the one that was severly overrated.

That review is just a rehash of every other review that mentioned XIII's negatives, but for some reason a linear open world and a slow, plodding story are most important to that particular reviewer. I personally feel linearity is a strength in most games (as it's very easy to screw up and I hate not knowing what to do or where to go in games that are too hands off) and don't mind that you only control one character.
FF games have always been about a journey through an epic story, and from what I've read, XIII nails that.

I never meant to piss anyone off. We all know there are people who are way to quick to judge and when they hear certain words alot of negativity seeps in, which is a shame.
On another note, nice to see another vote going to 8! where my SeeDs at?

Conan the Barbarian .
I'll vote FF7 because that was the first one i played, that put all the experiences together, impressive graphics at the time, cool fighting mechanics, relatable main character...

VIII was cool. Story was a little cheesy, but it was highly customizable. I liked it. VIII was as underrated as VII was overrated. Maybe even a little more.

VIII was incredibly awesome at the beginning. Unfortunately, the game got more boring as it progressed.
Still, it's one of the few RPGs that interested me enough to actually finish. I'll give it another go eventually.
On another note, I own Final Fantasy Origins. How does this FF1 version compare to the NES one? Is it as hard?

The biggest flaw with Final Fantasy VIII is it's called "Final Fantasy VIII". If it wasn't part of the series, it'd be one of those sleeper RPG gems everyone raves about, but nobody has played.
Origins is actually a good remake of FF1. The bugs are fixed, and there are a few "enhancements", but you can turn them off. I recommend it. I recommend staying very far away from Dawn of Souls, though.

Very much this. I especially love the re-done soundtracks.

Why can't games just be good for their time? Final Fantasy 6 was the best of the SNES era. Final Fantasy was the pinnacle of RPG's for the Playstation Era. Being a Pop Culture website you gotta figure the older NES-SNES games are going to get a majority of the love.
Edit: And whoever voted for Final Fantasy II, that is a blatant lie. I never met anyone who thought it was good let alone their favorite. |
I dunno, maybe FFII got a vote from a Japanese kid who played the original back in '88 and it became the game of his childhood. Probably someone just mistaking it for IV though.

I thought the ice cave was way harder on the PS1 version (Origins). However the rest of it was a little easier it seemed. However the bugs were certainly fixed. I hated buying potions one at a time in the original NES version.

| I might take some shit for this, but five might be my personal favorite. I'm a big fan of the job system or any RPG with more customization. VI had enough characters to be highly customizable as well. Although I did get my fill of VI when it was released back in '94 when it was supposed to be. IV was good, however not as customizable as I would like it to be. The first one will always be the most classic to me (NES version of course). I'm currently enjoying the PS1 trilogy even though I haven't finished IX yet. Haven't played any of them beyond that and don't know if I'll even bother. As a 'retro gamer' are any of the newer ones even worth trying? |
As a fellow retro gamer, I would recommend the wii spinoff of IV "The After Years" It was pretty fun, but overall, I found that the length of the game didn't justify the price in buying it in "chapters."
I've beaten X and XII, and while the arena in X was fun, and the hunts in XII were also, I'd stick with the classics.
Also, V is my favorite, bringing back the Jobs from III was a great idea, and made sometimes endless battling very rewarding and exciting while you were waiting to see what class ability you learn.

V was awesome, maybe my personal favorite. That one or VI. However I thought NeoXdeath was way harder as a final boss than Kefka. Kefka was an annoying little bitch but NeoXdeath was one fucked up looking monstrosity!

I think the first game to keep me up until 4:30 was actually Soul Blazer.
In regards to XI, it was pretty fun, but I liked WoW better.
Anyways, for this poll, I chose VI as the best (as per the thread title), but my favorite is still IV.

I loved Soulblazer when it first came out! Course maybe we should start another thread for that.
