my extremely Mormon family is accepting of one of their lesbian daughters, they even treat her significant other just like the rest of the family during get togethers. They just call her "her good friend". Laughing

I don't think Mormans are suppose to like anything except for God and their special underwear.

Probably, but she's old enough to do what she wants and I'm assuming they gave up trying to convert her, and decided instead to play nice to keep family integrity, they may disapprove in private but I've never seen them condemn ostracize or shun any family members.

Oddly enough, the one time I did really piss them off was when I called it magic underwear. Laughing

Just as fuel for thought, (or the fire, whichever), what about what happened to this student at the same school?

The most disturbing thing is that the ACLU wouldn't take his case.

ARRRRGH. SO MANY VIOLATIONS OF THE QUOTING POLICY IN THIS THREAD.

The fact that you all fucking suck at quoting aside, here's what I think: the girl wanted attention. She got it. She'll continue to get it. Hell, she'll probably parlay this whole thing into a full college scholarship paid for by liberal bloggers, followed by a cushy job at the Huffingpaint Post.

Maybe I'm being cynical though.

Cynical? Try being "the reason no one takes conservatives seriously."

Name two locations up north where grown adults have pulled a fake-out prom stunt.

By "these things" I guess I should have said discrimination against lesbians/gays. I can't name a fake out like this from up north, I guess what I really meant was that the author made it sound like a main reason it happened was because it was in the south. I don't think it happened just because it's the south, it could happen anywhere.

Lol JRA, how many times are you going to edit your last post? What it says now is the third thing I've seen it say.

When I was an elementary school, a local high school principal refused to let interracial couples into the prom. This was in the suburbs north of Boston.

Ok, I guess I will go with my knee jerk reactions (i.e. go to a death camp), rather than just get it out, think about it for a second, then re-edit it. That's the beauty of the internet. You don't have to think before you speak. You can speak, hope no one has seen it yet, then take it back and post something a little less dramatic.

Yeah, perhaps she is just vying for attention, and perhaps at college she'll shake off all her stupid pretensions. But, with regards to the action of taking a girl as a partner to the prom, I don't see it as a stupid move. Hell, I'd like to think that I would do the same in her position. I wouldn't care about what they think or do, I'd be the person I truly am. That's not to say this girl thought on the same wavelength - perhaps she was naive enought to believe they would accept her into the fold, as such - but to bash the move in principle is, as SoldierHawk said, bashing the work of people like Rosa Parks who thought "To hell with you, I'll sit where I want."

Of course, it doesn't help that the author of that article is a complete prick:

While I do stand against homophobia, I think pushing the point towards degrading the nature of human beings (especially people from the south) is incredibly immature. I think I've read a blog of theirs before which went along the lines of "The south sux it shud hav stayed confedrate lets nuke it". Answer intolerance with intolerance - what a great response...

I am assuming the girl isn't an actual lesbian because I knew seriously at least 10-15 "lesbians" in high school and now, 7-8 years later 3/4 of them are either divorced, barefoot and pregnant or working at McDonalds. Point being they were just bored, and not an actual lesbian. They were sluts.

You're not really helping the case of defending where you live. And on that note, because she wanted to even take a female date, she should be banned and actively harassed by adults, and denied the rights her other students share?

Second off, if she is a lesbian and she knowingly wanted to flaunt it in a place that has a history of intolerance to anyone different than them, she is fucking dumb. If she expected it to be like a Lifetime movie where everyone cheers and slow claps when she brings her girlfriend, then she is also fucking dumb. There are places in this country where things like this are OPENLY accepted, if not encouraged.

Her trying to do this in a place that history has shown will almost certainly not change their attitudes towards minorities or sexuality is immature and I can't get behind her, no matter how much I want to. I truly don't care about a persons sexuality, it doesn't bother me at all. Dumbassery bothers me though.

How is it immature trying to gain acceptance in a place that openly discriminates against peoples sexualities..?

She isn't being a dumbass at all the people living their should learn to fucking accept peoples opinions as well as sexual orientations there is no immaturity about it.

Banky Edwards: Good. Over here, we have a male-affectionate, easy to get along with, non-political agenda lesbian. Down here, we have a man-hating, angry as fuck, agenda of rage, bitter dyke. Over here, we got Santa Claus, and up here the Easter Bunny. Which one is going to get to the hundred dollar bill first?
Holden: What is this supposed to prove?
Banky Edwards: No, I'm serious. This is a serious exercise. It's like an SAT question. Which one is going to get to the hundred dollar bill first? The male-friendly lesbian, the man-hating dyke, Santa Claus, or the Easter bunny?
Holden: The man-hating dyke.
Banky Edwards: Good. Why?
Holden: I don't know.
Banky Edwards: BECAUSE THE OTHER THREE ARE FIGMENTS OF YOUR FUCKING IMAGINATION!!

With that out of the way, I know I personally would have kept my mouth and activities silent if I became "aware" back during my high school years, as if I weren't already belittled and harassed enough back then. I do think it was a dick move by the school to first cancel the prom and then have a fake out of it, just to further taunt her. Lastly as one Southerner who admires his own gender commenting on a similar person, I do think most girls who say they're lesbians in high school and college are posers/think it's fashionable to do it. However, I think this girl is sincere and commendable for taking a stand.

If we're going to have a serious conversation, can we stop making shit up? I've known only a few lesbians, and none of them were part of these "like, twenty girls I know who made it up for attention," and since when do you see a legit, man-hating bull-dyke anymore? It all just reeks of some of you just being insecure and threatened, and creates the kind of hostile environment for some young girl who likes kissing girls.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
