You want more over the top craziness, butt loads of extra stuff to do, full character customization, and more SA like gameplay?

Play Saint's Row 2.

You want more gritty realism, play GTA IV.

You want to have a blast just messing around in a fun sand-box world, play Just Cause 2.

This. Saints Row 2 was kind of lame, but I honestly think I had more fun playing it than GTA IV.

I've heard this from a lot of people. I'm actually really curious to check it out, but I have zero desire to spend the money. I'll content myself with hunting down a video guide or LP of it.

Anything that was good about San Andreas was stopped dead in it's tracks with the fucking awful remote control plane mission. Is there one of those in GTA IV? If there isn't, then the answer to "what happened" is the game vastly improved.

It's down to $30 on Steam, and I could have sworn I saw it at Walmart one day for $20. If you find it for $20 or cheaper, it is definately worth it.

If the price doesn't convice you, maybe Uncle Gary can:

Yeah, I think I agree that the "gritty and realistic" nature of GTA IV is what kind of did in the fun factor for me. I mean, not that gang life in LA is not realistic and tragic too, but c'mon--GTA: SA took all the sexy aspects of that stereotype and cranked them up to 11 just for fun. Jacking a car or having a firefight in the middle of the street seemed completely natural in SA. In IV it just feels...weird. Because Nico is this down on his luck immigrant who we're supposed to *truly* sympathize and identify with, and why the hell would he go around just randomly jacking cars, evading the police, and shooting people? It doesn't make any sense. Or for any fun.

Yeah the moral dilemmas he faces in the cutscenes felt really tacked on, and like you pointed out, were a bit jarring in the midst of all the car jacking and shooting.

I think most of it was because he thought his life "here" would have been different... like I guess since he committed crime in the past it comes naturally to him, but he doesn't want to make this his life but he has no choice in doing so.

Fail the mission and you hear Zero say "Nooooooooooo!"

That's the only mission I never finished legit.

I remember it taking like 200 tries or something absurd, but I did beat that plane mission legit.

IV was basically a step backwards in every aspect except for the graphics and physics. It had far less variety in terms of vehicles, activities and locations, and just felt like a shell of the previous games with pretty graphics. Also, the music sucks.

You assclowns want to know a moral dillemma? Having to sneak in a rapper's mansion to steal his lyrics to give to a fake ass poser, and they only way you can get past their guards was slitting their throats. Fuck you! I don't want to brutally murder security guards who are doing their jobs in order to steal someone's art! That was bullshit. That was something else that made me stop playing that game for a while.

See, the problem I saw with that was that CJ seemed like a good person deep down. He's family oriented and all the cut scenes paint him as a pretty mellow guy, then I turn around and slit security guard's necks? You're absolutely right. That's one of the reasons I enjoy playing as Tommy or Claude, they're just straight up assholes.

Didn't look good to me. I'm basically beyond GTA now anyways, I had my fun with the 3 games I bought and I think I'm going to leave it at that.

Ah, I see. Well, for anyone who couldn't get enough San Andreas, but wasn't pleased with GTA IV, I would highly recommend it. Same gang-type feel as SA. More customization. Crazy rides like mail trucks, sewage trucks, fast food delivery vehicles, and even a UFO. Crazy weapons, like the pimp cane shotgun and shock paddles. Crazy attire, like pirate suits, barbershop quartet outfits, and construction worker gear. You can even create CJ from San Andreas if you want. Or, you can even create a little old lady. The shit to do is endless.

The only thing it is missing is a jetpack. Oh, and a bicycle.

Did you even try the game? I did and didn't think it was great or better than San Andreas, but still a fun little sandbox game. Don't knock shit till you try it, holmes. It makes you look silly.

with that mentality, we'd have to buy every single game that comes out.

the guy said he was basically done with sandbox games anyway. if he came into the thread and asked what sandbox games were worth playing, and then exclaimed "oh that game sucks but I have never played it" that would be a different story.

My reasons:

-Flight is too limited in GTA IV
-I loved the country/bumblefuck regions of SA
-More interesting/funny characters in SA
-The tighter, more realistic control scheme is too unforgiving to be fun
-The cops are too aggressive. In SA, you could kill like 10 people before you even got 1 star. In GTA IV you just punch someone in the face and they come after you. It limits your ability to go on rampages, which is like 80% of the fun in a GTA game.

Not really, I mean that's the beauty of Demos and rental services.
