This belongs in Feedback, doesn't it? And I noticed both that, and a few times lately the last post thing's been fucking up. Meh.

<Drew_Linky> Well, I've eaten vegetables all of once in my life.

Well I don't really consider it feedback although I thought about posting it there, but if a mod wants to move it, I suppose they could.

As far as the date, is that just random or what?

Although the "official" answer will probably be some sort of lame cover up involving database errors and possibly some swamp gas and a weather balloon, I'm siding with BZ.

Sucks that we arrived on December 31st, I'm told 1969 was a good year.

When the most recent post in a thread has been deleted, it causes a glitch where the "Last Post" date gets displayed as Dec 31, 1969. The way the system is coded, it can't be allowed to display assign a null date without causing massive fuck-ups, so someone decided Dec 31, 1969 would be a good date to use. Why? I don't know.

Since there is no longer a poster, the poster name is null and displayed as a blank space.

When the most recent post in a thread is also the most recent post on a forum and it gets deleted, it fucks up the "Last Post" date for the forum as well.

The pixels are distorted because the image is being compressed. If you browse to the full URL of his image, there is no image manipulation:

Syd, the null date is equated to a date of 0, that is why the Dec 31, 1969 is interpreted.

Unix was released in 1970. On Unix based systems math for time functions is based around the idea that before 1970 time was negative.

Therefore December 31, 1969 23:59:59 is recognized on Unix systems mathematically as 0.

So what is up with the 6PM?

Time is based on time zones. So whoever took the screenshot is at -6 from GMT.

If you want more info, there is a good writeup here: http://www.lisaksimone.com/phoneonfire/2009/04/22/yo-today-is-december-31-1969/

I was pretty much talking out of my ass. I knew I was more or less giving an almost correct explanation, but I was too lazy to look it up.

18. You are not the master of unlocking.
If a thread you started is locked or deleted, it is because the moderators felt that it was inappropriate. If you feel that the thread was unfairly locked, you may contact any or all of the moderators and plead your case. DO NOT START A NEW THREAD ASKING WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OLD ONE. Doing so will result in a mandatory three day ban from the forums. Repeat offenders will receive increasingly severe punishments up to and including banning.

...just kidding Very Happy

That's actually a pretty interesting glitch. when I first saw this, I had assumed Syd's nostalgia for the past had finally reached critical mass, creating an Event Horizon centered on the forums that sent us all back into nicer and simpler times.

But the clock issue explains it too. Oh well.
