So I wanna buy some new games this weekend, but I really don't know what's worth buying these days.
I work from home, and only a few hours a day, so I need something to keep me busy for a while.

Right now, I'm thinking of picking up Uncharted 2 and maybe Mass Effect 2, but I get the feeling that by the end of the week I'll have finished both of them and won't be interested in replaying them.

I agree.

Em what consoles do you have?

I would recommend:

MGS4 - PS3 only
Left 4 Dead 1/2
Team Fortress 2 - Only worth having on Xbox 360/PC
Heavy Rain - PS3 only
Modern Warfare 2
FFXIII

That's all i can think of for the moment.

I think if you want something that will suck your life up, and you like third-person shooters and sandbox GTA-like games, you could NOT do better than to buy Just Cause 2. It has absolutely owned my life for the last week, and shows no signs of letting up. Its the first game I've bought at the full $50 price in literally 6-7 years, and I don't regret a penny of it. I feel like its already paid for itself in entertainment value, and I'm, what, like 11% complete with it? Awesome. Just awesome.

Also, I have no idea if you've ever played the Half-Life series, but if not, well worth your time. The individual games aren't too long, from what I understand, but if you buy 'em all, you'll have a lot of absolutely awesome gaming time on your hands. (I can only speak from experience for HL 1, which I'm...I dunno, maybe 1/3-1/2 of the way through, but its awesome, and the sequels only get better from what everyone says.)

if you like RTSes, Empire: Total War will also be a huge and entertaining life-sink. Not only is the "story mode" fun, there are so many different factions, ways to play, and win conditions you can set that the re-playability is huge. (I would advise staying away from any of the DLC, at least at first...the extra units really, really aren't worth your money unless you play the game a lot and become a fan of using certain factions--then buying the extra units for that faction might be worth it.)

Also on the RTS front, Civilization IV. Just...Civ IV.

If you haven't played Batman: Arkham Asylum has a relatively short (but incredibly fun) story mode. The after-game play, searching for all the little collectibles, unlockables and riddles will keep you busy, though (as will replaying it just for fun.)

GTA: San Andreas if you have a PS2 and haven't played it. SO much damn fun, and the 90s nostalgia makes it even more so. Failing that, if you don't have a PS2/already have SA, GTA IV is pretty good. Personally it wasn't really my cup of tea; the story didn't do it for me and neither did the missions or environment. The size of the map just seemed intimidating as opposed to fun to explore. Still, if you like GTA, its a great buy on Steam right now at $30. (I'd recommend Just Cause 2 over it all day long, but JC2 IS still $50 and, although you will get more than enough bang for your buck to justify the price, GTA IV also has a ton of content for its $30.)

Also, Portal. Its a very short game, but its challenge modes and achievements will keep you playing over and over again. As will the absolutely wonderful story. And you can't beat the game quality you get for the price.

I got an xbox and a ps3.
My real problem is that I can't play online, otherwise I'd be all over MW2. I bought it when it came out, but that was before I took this contract in this shithole of a town. I'm connected to the net by 3G connection with a 5GB/month limit.

Since I've been here (end of November), I've been through Splinter Cell: Double Agent, MW2, Dead Space, Overlord 2, Dragon Age Origins, Bioshock, Red Faction Guerrilla and Bionic Commando.

I'm thinking I may have to pull out my gamecube and finally finish Metroid Prime 2.

Get a droid, root it and use the wireless tether and you will have mobile wi-fi hotspot anywhere you go. Also Prototype and Batman are pretty sweet.

I'm in Canada. Unlimited wireless plans don't exist here. At least not in Quebec.

For newish games, I'd suggest...

Single player:
Assassin's Creed II
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Bayonetta
Bioshock 2
Mass Effect 2

Multi player:
Borderlands
Left 4 Dead 2

Don't get Prototype. That game was a terrible disappointment. It's repetitive, glitchy as hell and has the graphics of a PS2 game. Not to mention if you ever played Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, this is basically the exact same fucking game minus the license.

How could I forget ACII, that was such a fun game... the expansion packs were totally worth it. Surprisingly Call of Jaurez: Bound in Blood was a fun game, but I'd wait for the next Red Dead game to come out.

What does ACII bring to the table over the first game? I got sick of the first one after about an hour, when I realized that you could use the same trick to beat all the bad guys regardless of how many there were.

I really liked Bioshock, but again, I found that while the game was hard at first because you're weak, I got used to the shock+wrench technique. The rest of it was about saving electric and exploding shotgun ammo and grenades for big daddies. Does Bioshock 2 change this at all?

Pretty Much, ACII has a more intriguing Story line, new weapons. There is only one instance where you leave the Animus in the middle of the game, the hiding system is much more intricate (you can buy prostitutes to walk along you keeping you hidden, Thieves to distract guards, mercenaries to fight with you) The fighting is a bit more different, but once you get the smoke bombs, pretty much instant kills if you get the trick, but the bombs are later in the game. Money is more important now since you can buy throwing knives, smoke bombs, bullets (yes you get a gun later in the game but you only get six shots at a time and it's on your hidden blade), medicine, poison and much more. The cities are more livelier and the people do react to you, just not as much.

Yes, but how much does that change the gameplay? Can you still just shock + smash your way through the game? Cause that gets old fast. When you can kill almost every enemy with two hits, including one that paralyzes your target, it just becomes too easy.

I've also heard good things about The Saboteur. Has anyone played it?

It isn't new, but I've been playing Far Cry 2 for a bit and it gobbles up time.

If you are a fan of the movies, and haven't played it yet, I would get a hold of Lego Star Wars. You can get it on any system, current generation or last. It's really fun. Plenty of unlockables and stuff to do in addition to the main story.

Brutal Legend!

Other than that, I mostly just use my XBox for fighting games. None of the hot, hyped releases for the 360/PS3 really interest me all that much.

Too many of the hyped releases these days are first person/3rd person shooters. Don't get me wrong, I like those games. But when most of the good games that come out fall in that category, it gets old.

I like games with color in them. If it takes place in the desert or on a spaceship, I'm not fucking interesting.
