Defender may not be a shmup by today's standards, but it definitely helped shape the genre.

Super Mario Brothers is a shmup because platformers are very vaguely similar to run and guns, and run and guns are very vaguely similar to shmups. Super Mario Brothers is the best shmup ever.

What, no love for 1942 or 1943? Those were classic Shmups.
Also, don't forget Neo Geo:
Zed Blade / Operation Ragnarok
Viewpoint
Twinkle Star Sprites
Pulstar
Prehistoric Isle 2
Last Resort
Iron Clad / Chotetsu Bri'kinger
Ghost Pilots
Captain Tomaday
Blazing Star
Andro Dunos
Alpha Mission 2 aka ASO II : Last Guardian
Aero Fighters 2, aka Sonic Wings 2
Aero Fighters 3, aka Sonic Wings 3
Oh, and for Dreamcast:
Last Hope. (Came out in 2007!)

I've got 1942, 1943 and 1943 kai on the Capcom classics collection for ps2 but my ps2 is broken . Out of the three, I played 1942 the most, I don't know why it just kept me coming back. Ghosts and Goblins always got more play than the other two aswell!
Thx for the list, I'll check some of those out.

If you are including imports the Parodius games and Harmful Park are fun. The PSP version of Parodius has them all on it and is relatively cheap to import too. Harmful Park is insanely expensive and hard to find though. You will also need a modded Playstation to play it.

^ I've got all the Parodius games and Harmful park. Other really expensive rare ones I've got are Salamander deluxe pack plus and Zanac X Zanac.
Harmful park is a real feast for the eyes, I love it!!

I played Abadox for a little while today and i have to say i quite liked it once i turned the auto-fire on, it's certainly not wonderful and some might say it ripped off Salamander but (so long as it's not a total rip off) i prefer to look at it as paid homage. I made it halfway through the second level before i had to go do something else, but I'll definitely pick it up and try and beat it at some point in the future.
Remember that auto-fire prevents carpal tunnel, as does having a girlfriend.

This thread put me back in the mood so tonight I picked up Raiden III for the PS2 on the way home. The gameplay is very solid but the difficulty is maddening.

^ Oh man, Raiden has to be my favorite vertical shooter. I haven't played III but i can imagine how cool it is. I got The Raiden Project for PSX a while back, which is I and II, Raiden II is great but the original is where it's at. It's got such a beautiful balance to it. I'd go so far as to call it a masterpiece!!
The Raiden games are hard as nails but combine that with solid gameplay and you've got something thats incredibly rewarding. Just trying to beat that Hi-score, or get an inch further than you've ever been is what it's all about.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Stinger (or TwinbBee if you prefer). I didn't see that on your list.

Added some more to the list:
Cotton Original
Defender
1941: Counter Attack
Stinger
Mobile Light Force
Abadox
U.N. Squadron
The way they've packaged Mobile Light Force is funny. The cover makes it look like some dodgy Charlies Angels ripoff, and the name Mobile Light Force sounds a little bit...camp!, what was wrong with Gunbird?. The game is pretty cool, but because of that cover, i bet it didn't sell as well as it should have.
Personally I like pictures of chicks with guns!
Same game

Haha you should see the cover for Mobile Light Force 2. The game is awesome too. It's a shame.

Stinger is actually a localized version of the second game in the series. None of the other TwinBee (shooter) games have been mentioned so here's a rundown. All are Japan-only except where noted:
TwinBee (1985, Arcade/NES/DS, found in Konami Arcade Classics or whatever it was)
Stinger/Moero! TwinBee (J: 1986/1993 for cartridge, and US: 1987, FDS/NES. US version took out pre-game dialogue between pilots and 3-player mode)
TwinBee 3 (1989, NES, fan translated)
TwinBee da!! (1990, GB, released and colorized in Europe in the Konami GB Collection vol.3)
Detana!! TwinBee (1991, Arcade/PC Engine and PS1/Saturn in TwinBee double pack)
Pop 'n TwinBee (1993, SNES, released in Europe)
TwinBee Yahho-! (1995, Arcade and PS1/Saturn in TwinBee double pack)
They're all AWESOME games, especially the latter 3.
Some more for right now:
Arcade:
Mazinger Z (fuck yeah)
XEXEX (Is that a little Castlevania I see in you?)
NES:
Image Fight
Crisis Force
Air Fortress
SNES:
Earth Defense Force
Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie
Phalanx: The Enforce Fighter A-144
Genesis:
Trouble Shooter and sequel Battle Mania Daiginjou (fan translated)
Twinkle Tale (fan translated)
Elemental Master
Eliminate Down
Slap Fight
Vapor Trail
Truxton
Final Zone
Arrow Flash
Gleylancer (on Virtual Console)
Gaiares
Sol-Deace
GB/C:
Battle Unit Zeoth
Magical Chase GB (fan translated)
GBA:
Robotech: Macross Saga
Iridion 3D
Iridion II
PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16
Lords of Thunder
Dead Moon
Image Fight (closer to the arcade than the NES version)
Macross 2036
Ordyne
Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire (most advanced shooter on the system, uses the Arcade Card)
Also look out for Otomedius on 360, because signs point to it coming to America and you may see something this E3. It's basically Gradius with Mecha musume/girls. It's the successor to the Parodius series.

I'd like to note, that there is a TwinBee on the VC for wii in the Turbo GFX 16 section. Surprisingly, my mom and dad used to play Stinger all the time after us kids went to bed... funny now because my dad hates Video Games...
