So I've got a problem with my computer, There's just certain programs I can't open.

I don't know what the deal is, I don't get a regular error message.
I get

"[Program] has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

It's done this with a few dozen other programs

WotC CharacterBuilder
Runman: Race against the World
Sharepod
Peggle

and a couple of others.

Reinstall you video card drivers.

Do you have a ATI or NVIDIA?

Really it sounds like a bug or a recent update is causing a conflict or possibly another program running in the background (close other running programs one by one while testing peggle for example to see if it still crashes. other than that reinstall software that you are having problems with), run virus scans, defrag, etc.Other than that it is really hard to tell what exactly is causing it, not a lot of information to go on

I would think you would have a hard copy cd that came with the card for reinstall. If you are looking for the version you are using just do a search for video card, or you should be able to find it somewhere in control panel.

Edit: Based on that error it seems it is trying to access a file that no longer exists, this really starting to sound like one of those .NET Framework screw ups to me. I had something similar awhile back and just decided to backup and reinstall the OS. If it is a net framework problem this may help http://www.ironspeed.com/designer/5.0.0/webhelp/part_vi/Application_Won_t_Run.htm#Application_Won_t_Run

My drivers didn't come with a hard copy CD, unfortunately. I know i've got a radeon, but not which drivers.

Well I guess what you can do as long as you know the make and model of video card is do a web search for drivers or go right to the radeon home page.

I would do the following.

1. Run a check disk (chkdsk c: /r) and verify that your drive data is in good working order
2. Run Windows Update manually and check if there are video drivers available
3. Test and see if your problems are gone
4. Report back your findings and also list your OS

I really don't have a fix for it but all this sounds like a .net framework error. This shit happens all the time when updating.

Okay, do me a favor:
Click start => Then Run => Type in "dxdiag" and press enter.
A window will pop up with a progress bar on the left side. Once the bar has filled, click on "Save All Information". That will create a txt file called DxDiag.txt. Open the file, copy and paste the first 4 sections here.

You may need to do a system file check, but first things first. Without knowing your OS we can't go forwards.

The reason why I want that info, is because I had a very simular problem that I finally solved just a few days ago.

My system was only running Dx9 & Dx11 games, it would crash upon startup on any dx10 games I tried to run. Like this:

Bioshock dx9 = worked. Bioshock dx10 = crashed trying to load exe
HAWX dx9 = worked. HAWK dx10.1 = crashed trying to load exe
Just Cause 2 Demo dx10 = crashed trying to load exe
Lord Of The Rings Online dx9 = Worked. dx10 = crashed trying to load exe
Bad Company 2 dx9 = worked, dx10 = crashed trying to load exe, dx11 = worked.
Haven Dx11 Benchmark = worked.

After trying to reinstall DX straight from M$'s website, reinstalling 3 different sets of Video drivers, installing .NET Framework, and everything else I could think of, I finally fixed the issue, by downloading the Video drivers straight from ASUS's website. (Which is weird, because the only difference between ATI's Catalyst 10.3 drivers and the one on the ASUS site (Also Cat 10.3) was that there was a ASUS logo next to the ATI logo on the install. None, the less, it fixed the issue, and dx10 programs run fine now.

Okay:

1. First thing I want you do is download this:
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/10-3_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu.exe

2. Go to Control Panel => Add/Remove Programs => Find the "ATI Catalyst" driver and uninstall them. (They could be called "ATI Catalyst", "Catalyst Control Center", etc.)

3. Once they are down uninstalling your computer will want to reboot. Let it.

4. Once you have rebooted, run the exe you downloaded. Reboot again. See if that fixes the problem.

Do NOT save any more photos.

There is software that can get it for you. Try this one:
http://www.piriform.com/recuva

It is free, but should work for you. If you still need more help I have some commercial software ideas, but they are definitely not free.

Ah, you're right.

Try this one:

edit: I don't know why the quick click is cutting the url off. Just copy and paste the whole thing into your browser.

Probably best to grab the drivers directly from AMD/ATI.

The driver he needs is for a legacy Radeon 1650. ATI is currently suggestion only driver version 10.2.
