If it's a sequel, shouldn't it be called "Through the Looking Glass"?
And while I have no reason to see this, I actually liked his "Planet of the Apes", Tim Roth did an excellent job.

Well, it's not a true sequel.
It's a re-imagining of a sequel that never happened.

It was very disappointing for me. There was a whole 45 minutes of uninteresting filler that confused me and seemed to conflict with the main plot. While the visuals were great, Burton's signature flashbacks detracted from the main plot, confusing me in the process. I can't say much else without revealing too much, but overall I found the movie confusing and disappointing. That said I'm off to read the Lewis Carroll novels to further extend my opinion as my knowledge of it all is limited and based off of secondhand experience.

I saw it today. Interesting take on it. Such a shame Christopher Lee only had two lines.

Those two lines are what convinced me my time had not been entirely wasted.
Seriously, Tim Burton? Did you sit around in the creative meeting and go, "Alice in Wonderland is good...but you know what it needs? It needs to be a high-fantasy action movie! People liked LOTR, right?? Let's just rip that off [and badly, to boot] and call it a day."
Ugh. Watching the Mad Hatter wield...siiiiiigh...a fucking claymore is the movie fail of the year for me. And in fairness to me, I may be something of a book purist when it comes to movies, but I am in no way a snob. This movie...this had NOTHING to do with Alice in Wonderland, beyond some of the character designs and names. Take out those elements, and you have every single bad generic fantasy/hero movie you've ever sat through. Again: fail.
However, Doc, if this movie convinced you to go read the book...I consider its existence vindicated. Plus, as has been mentioned, the visuals were awesome. I just wish they had told the actual story of, y'know, Alice in Wonderland.

With the way things are going from what people have been saying, I'll probably skip this one altogether. I wasn't ever high on it to begin with, but Jesus...what's going on with Tim Burton?

Maybe I'm just unspeakably male, but it seems to me they they just couldn't decide if Alice's dress was one of those ones that magically resize with her, or not. It started out that way, but...yeah.

I enjoyed it outside of Alice killing a dragon-esque creature without so much as an 80s montage to explain how she did it. 'Just hold the sword, it knows what to do.' is such a piss poor band-aid that it made me sick. That and the whole 'I hate what my family is making me do cause I'm such an individual!' plot is so annoyingly overdone...
I went in without any expectations of it having to do with the original stories other than some familiar characters however, so everything else was quite entertaining.
Also I'm glad I saw it in 3D. Maybe it's just my normal cynicism but I was going to avoid it out of an expectation of nothing but cheap 3D exploitation. Glad to see that wasn't the case outside of a few fun moments.

^ I agree with 99% of that. Her killing the Jabberwoky didn't bug me quite so much, and for one reason, and one reason only: the dialog that the Jabberwoky had, speaking directly to the sword and referring to Alice as the 'insignificant bearer.' Yeah, its still kind of a band-aid and I wish they had explained WHAT exactly the Vorpal was and how a sword (or the spirit of the sword or whatever) can be the Jabberwoky's 'age old enemy'...but on the balance, it was one of the less-preposterous things in the story I think.

DBZ did something similar. someone imprisoned the original Lord of Lords inside a sword during the Buu saga

Oh, that reminds me of something that irked the fuck out of me:
JABBERWOCKY IS THE FUCKING NAME OF THE POEM, NOT THE NAME OF THE CREATURE! The creature is not a "Jabberwocky", it's a fucking JABBERWOCK!
What gets me doubly about this is the Hatter recited the damn poem in the film.
Also, would it have killed them to make the vorpal blade snicker-snack?

Yeah, I agree with most of the stuff here. Also, I found the ending battle scene thingy to be really drawn out and boring... a terrible climax. Also, I saw it in 3D because I went with other people, but albinism prevented me from experiencing that, so I can't comment on the 3D, and all the visuals were filtered through shitty trying-to-work 3D, plus the glasses would mute it anyway, so thumbs down to that. Overall, I wasn't much a fan, but part of that wasn't the movie's fault, and it was a fine way to kill some time, just not as much as it killed.
The bit before she gets to Wonderland felt ridiculously trite, like "Oh, it's a Tim Burton movie, here's the individualism message, crammed and cliched." Then it was alright for a while, but definitely lamed out again for the climax.

saw it yesterday. i enjoyed it. granted, the whole girl power, girl becoming a woman message was annoying, it was a decent movie. probably the best interpretation of a live action alice in wonderland movie we can expect. maybe ron howard might do better, but it was well done.
i have never read the books so i cant comment on whether it was true to the source material or not. i was never a huge fan of the cartoon version, so i enjoyed this version better.

Lol well what did you expect, User? That's one of the major points of the books, too.
I am curious why it's annoying to you though...I've watched plenty of boy-becoming-a-man coming of age stories that I've really enjoyed. Was it just the way it came across in this particular movie that bugged?

It didn't seem so much a "girl becoming a woman" story as a "girl becoming a man" story.
