Yeah, that's the thing. It looks like fun, but so does running from the bulls and I certainly am not gonna do that shit. Getting a motorcycle is basically saying "I trust everyone on the road around me to drive the speed limit, be able to see me and treat me differently because I'm on a bike" and that shit is just wishful thinking. Yeah, I know life is full of risks and you could die anytime, but I'm not gonna purposefully raise the shit balls of my chances of death by someone else's hand, or by me hitting a pebble and getting thrown 500 feet and dismembered.

I stopped riding in 05 when a good friend of mine was killed on his bike. He had literally just got back from an overseas deployment 3 days before as a Marine Reservist. He was riding and a lady in an SUV was apparently angry that he was swerving through traffic so she decided to cut him off. His bike went up on one wheel and he went head first through her back window, he was airlifted to the same emergency room where he worked as an ER nurse, and died on the table in front of all his friends. He was 26. Fuck bikes, not for me.

I hope that woman was jailed.

My father had a motorbike and i recall hearing lots of stories from my grandmother of how he had this leather jacket and rode around on it during the 80s.. really cliched but then he fell of it and broke his leg.

When i ask him about them i am referred to how they are deathtraps.

I think maybe when I am old, and my daughter is grown up, I might buy a chopper. But crotch-rockets aren't for me. When I'm older, and I live in a less crazy driving hell-hole other than Miami, then cruising around might not be so bad. Also, I have always wanted to tell my wife that Zed's dead, baby, Zed's dead.

I understand where all you guys are coming from. I'm going to practice everyday and I'm going to wear full gear all the time. I just want to LIVE my life and not be afraid to do anything and riding a motorcycle is one of my dreams. It must be something else having that much power at the flick of your wrist.

All the training in the world doesn't change the fact that the majority of motorcycle accidents are another persons fault. But since you are determined about it, please be safe man. Read these statistics though, they are certainly something to chew on:

Here's a summary of NHTSA DOT HS 809 360
Single vehicle motorcycle crashes account for about 45 percent of all motorcyclist fatalities.

Findings from the FARS (Fatality Analysis Reporting System) data illustrate possible reasons for motorcyclist fatalities in single vehicle motorcycle crashes:

Half of the fatalities are related to negotiating a curve prior to the crash.

Almost two thirds of the fatalities were associated with speeding as an operator contributing factor in the crash.

Collision with a fixed object is a significant factor in over half of the fatalities.

Braking and steering maneuvers possibly contribute for almost 25 percent of the fatalities.

Per mile traveled, a motorcyclist is approximately 16 times more likely to die in a crash than an automobile occupant. And 3x (times) as likely to be injured.

In 1998, 41% of all motorcycle drivers involved in fatal crashes were speeding.

The overall increase in motorcyclist fatalities from 1997 to 1999 was 203 (21.7 percent).

I guess if you are really into it, minimize your personal risk by driving responsibly. You still have to assume the chance reality that others won't see you and will drive poorly.

If it's a passion I say pursue it, but know this...you will lay the bike down. It doesn't matter if you have rode a day or a lifetime, it's going to happen, Ride responsibly from beginning to end and don't let your friends or acquaintances end up getting you killed by getting you to show off. Word to the wise, service the hell out of the bike, someone I know had his rear wheel lock up going about 65 down the road it was not pretty but he made it. For a first bike I wouldn't get a beast power wise or you are just asking for problems. ride safe
