-to be revealed at this year's E3
-will release sometime between now and March 2011
-backwards compatible with DS and DSi
-will have 3D effects minus the glasses
-"3d control stick" = analog?
-rumble support
-improved battery life

Quote:
A press release on Nintendo's Japanese website appears to confirm the company's next handheld console, temporarily named the "Nintendo 3DS," and said to include hardware and software that will enable "3D effects" without the need for special glasses. The console is stated to be backwards compatible with DS and DSi games and is expected to go on sale (in Japan, presumably) "during the fiscal year ending March 2011" -- so within the next year. The press release has no pictures or other information, and save for the fact that it appears as a file on Nintendo's website, there's no other official word about the new hardware.

There are a few dots to connect, however: 3D gaming is on the rise, and a few other companies have also experimented with head tracking as a way to implement 3D effects. Nintendo's own Satoru Iwata hasn't been impressed with 3D gaming in the past, but his issue is with the glasses, not the technology. "I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home," he said recently. We've also heard that the next handheld would have a "movement sensor" of some kind, so if Nintendo really has designed a head-tracking 3D solution, then maybe the console is ready to go. The press release, which you can read after the break in full, says we'll see more at E3, so stay tuned.

UPDATE:
Quote:
As if news of a new handheld device coming from Nintendo in the middle of the night wasn't enough, Engadget today spotted two reports out of Japanese newspapers Asahi and Nikkei detailing the 3DS' known hardware so far. Asahi claims that the handheld's 3D output (remember, sans silly glasses) comes via a "parallax barrier LCD" from Sharp, while Nikkei backs this up and adds that the device's screens will measure roughly four inches diagonally across (each).

Nikkei also claims the device will feature a "3D control stick," though this could presumably be an analog control stick, as well as rumble support and an upped battery life / speedier Wi-Fi. And while we heard last night that the device would arrive on retail shelves sometime in "Fiscal 2010" (before the end of calendar year March 2011), the report says it will arrive during the "second half of [calendar] 2010," owing the new handheld's reveal to slowing DS sales. In speaking with a representative from Nintendo of America, the New York Times confirmed that we'll get our first hands-on with the 3DS at E3 2010, so we'll get our chance to find out exactly what that hardware contains soon enough.

The original DS had rumble support, via a cartridge that was inserted into your GBA slot. It came packaged with Metroid Prime Pinball.

This announcement may have just doomed the DSi XL, which releases next week. Is anybody even going to bother with that now, knowing that this is less than a year away?

And I think the rumble is presumably built in this time, since there is no mention of GBA compatibility.

Why?

3D is a gimmck. Alway has, always will be.

It was huge in the 50s, then it died.

It was huge in the 80s, then it died.

It's huge now...

You see where I am going with this?

If it ain't compatible with my 1989 games, then why should I switch? I remember when Game Boy Advance came out, and I ALMOST bought one. Then before I knew it, they released another one...and then another one. The problem I always had was that they changed the style of the cartridge, and since most of my favorite games for Game Boy are the old school ones, why would I want to upgrade. I've contemplated on several occasions getting a DS, but the lack of games I'm interested in for it doesn't outvalue spending money on it. I was never really that big on handheld games to begin with, outside of maybe Pokemon and Tetris.

I will reserve my judgment until they officially unveil it at E3 (or something serious leaks).

I am actually kinda excited, I bet at the very least it will be a much more powerful DS handheld.

As a proud fan of the DS brand, I will be interested in seeing what this machine is fully capable of before writing it off.

Yeah, my instinct is to laugh and write it off immediately too, but I did the same thing with the DS before I got one and it became the best handheld I've ever used. Two screens? Who the fuck needs two screens? And what's this stupid pen thing for? Touch screen? Lol, what a gimmick.

I have an open mind about 3D as long as there are no glasses involved and it isn't only colored black and red.

I did the same thing with Wii, thought the Wiimote system was a joke. I was very very wrong.

Remember those old "Wii would like to play" commercials? Well, you just made me imagine Samuel L. Jackson outright busting down some poor bastard's front door while spouting "WII DEMAND TO PLAY, MOTHERFUCKER!"

A good solution for the non-GB/GBC compatibility(Albeit illegal) is to get a flashcart and get Lameboy and emulate the GB/GBC games you own. A similar solution for no GBA games on DSi is another emu that I hear is coming on nicely, but I don't know the name of it.

Yeah, you have to get an iPlayer for GBA on DSi. The extra CPU power in the flashcard (normally used to run mp4/avi/mov/etc. videos) allows stuff like the GBA emulator to be used.

Anyway, supposedly, this being next-gen hardware, the 3DS will be powered by Nvidia's Tegra chip, which allows it to achieve Gamecube quality graphics *drool*. The screens'll also be closer to each other.

Also, 3D's here to stay now, like it or not. It's getting too ubiquitous now to go, what with all these 3DTVs coming out and shit.

I'm VERY much forward to seeing this at E3.
