I think the game would've worked a lot better if they kept Basch as the lead or gave the job to Ashe.
I'd have to say Balthier is a variant of the quiet kickass guy by being a charismatic kickass guy. I mean he's the only character regularly depicted using guns when everyone else is using swords, bows, staves, etc.

She wasn't really an idiot was she? I mean... she grew up in the land of summons right? She's kind of Vengeful in the SNES/GBA game

But it would have defeated the point. "This is your story" isn't just random incoherent mumbling. His story was 10 years ago. He failed.
Auron's role is simply as a guide.

She wasn't even really perky as a child, what with the "slaughter of my parents" and all.

Shadow from VI was my favorite. I also liked Yang from IV. Anyone who kicks ass with Kung Fu or ninja weapons tends to be my favorite. I used to play Final Fantasy I with 4 black belts. When they got to a high level they would kick the shit out of anybody.

I know, I meant I would rather hear Auron's story than Tidus', they should have just wrote the story around him and discarded Tidus.

They left out the one of the most important character types: The One Who Dies (Tellah/Galuf/Aeris)

I don't know if you were paying attention to the flashbacks, but before he died, Auron was a very, very boring person. It was Jecht who really opened his eyes to what was going on and that it should be stopped (and to be honest, any story about Braska's pilgrimage would probably be more "Jecht's story" than "Auron's story", much like Yuna's was "Tidus's story" and not "Wakka's story" or "Rikku's story").
The story won't work without Tidus, or someone like him. The problem in Spira is not so much Sin as it is Yevon...the status quo is never questioned, and anyone who tries is EVIL. It takes an idealistic outsider who questions the system at every turn to break up the stagnation of the Spirian power structure and get people even thinking of another way. Auron, as part of the structure...and as a dead guy...couldn't do that.
Auron is a badass in a void. He's awesome, and he's the only one who knows the truth for much of the game. But without people to guide, there's just nothing there.

I think Auron wasn't mentioned because the article was ridiculing the stereotypes, and Auron is too much of a badass to deserve any kind of ridicule.

"Badass" is so a stereotype, and a very boring character archtype.
Auron isn't the "badass". He's the guide. He's the experienced older party member who leads the characters along the path because he's been there and done that. He's more of a FuSoYa than a Shadow or Vincent.
Sure, he's fucking awesome, but that's not really important to his role in the overall world.

I meant that he's a badass, not the badass. Obviously he has a larger role than to simply be awesome.
