This thread has officially become serious business!

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

Yeah this is ridiculous. Come on Ermac, you make it hard to get along with you when you actually QUADRUPLE post. It makes any argument you may have lack validity because you are breaking the rules.

What I find funny is being called 'elitist' a few hours after I posted a tl;dr post about being poor, broke and a working stiff. Basing that on my original post in here, I guess there's no room for humor in politics. Someone asked about mudslinging, and to be honest, it's not a topic that generates a great deal of interest to me (after all, there's been mudslinging since there's been politics), so I have to make it funny to care. And now, I'm elitist. BUT, no one answered the unanswered question: Does the OP understand it now? THAT was the idea.

Not to fan flames, but who's more 'elitist', me for trying to make something boring something entertaining (and thus easier to understand), or someone who takes time to pick apart someone else whilst completely missing the point of the original post?

Are you seriously arguing FOR Ermac's quintuple post? Despite the fact that, you know, we have a rule that says Don't double post?

He's just being hacker man, it's no biggie. The more we point out annoying things he does, the more he will do them. I thought we would all have learned that by now.

To a similar point, why'd everyone complain about Ermac just then? I mean, this is the guy who argued that the whole world should switch to Fahrenheit because Americans associate thirty degrees with cold.

to be fair I did say that the US should switch to the metric system which I think is more practical while the rest of the world should consider Fahrenheit over Celsius. For scientific purposes I prefer Celsius much more, yet I think Fahrenheit is advantageous for measuring the weather, which has been shown through scientific study to involve less work when relating and measuring weather temperatures.

But then again, what do I know

And to be fair, I wasn't arguing your point, I was arguing your reasoning behind it. You made it quite clear, several times, that your reasoning was that Americans associated thirty degrees with cold. Nothing more.

I remember when Bob Backlund was running for president.

To answer Knyte's original question, I think the strongest argument for attack ads is this: For every person that hears a negative "rumor," the other side must actively refute it. In other words, they have to make sure that every potential voter that hears the attack ad also hears why that claim is baseless, otherwise the target candidate is at a disadvantage.

Of course, as Knyte says, the attacker's side may lose votes for running the ad. This is why negative ads are almost always paid for and run by third parties (as with the swift boat ads mentioned earlier). As long as they are setup this way, the non-target candidate can deny involvement and might even come out and say the attack ad is unfair (which will make him look good publicly). That's why we always hear a lot of talk about a "clean" campaign from candidates, without it usually happening.
