Ugh, the brain damage thing -- another reason I loathed V. Syd, you mentioned Rocky not being the smartest guy to begin with. Totally true, but the thing was that he improved dramatically between II and III, which was one of the things I found so fascinating. Remember in the montage at the beginning of III, Rocky's doing American Express commercials and appearing on the Muppet Show?
By III, Rocky had learned worlds, and it was awesome to see the character grow so much. The "brain damage" plot device was total bullshit. That plus the losing-his-fortune thing reeked of Stallone desperately trying to bring the character back to the way he was in Rocky I. And that's not how the movies had gone up to that point -- each movie was, more or less, a logical progression from the previous one.
