Sioux Falls Teachers React to NC Teacher Calling Student "A Loser"

Quote:
A North Carolina middle school teacher is in the hot seat over his controversial style of teaching. He says he's relating to his students, but teachers at Memorial Middle School in Sioux Falls have a different opinion.

"To me it's somebody thinking that it was going to be funny, and I guess I don't see that as a humorous statement."

Julie Ortman, a sixth grade teacher at Memorial, is referring to comments like "minus 20% for being a loser" made by the teacher in North Carolina, not once, but twice, on a sixth grader's homework assignments -- even after the mother of the student complained to school administrators that the teacher was bullying her daughter.

For her part, Ortman believes in a different approach: "I just know for me personally I have a list of one hundred one ways to praise a child."

When teacher Chuck Weis heard about the comments made on the student's papers, he thought of it not just as a teacher but also as a parent.

"When I come to school every day I have one hundred nineteen kids that I'm their parent for nine hours of the day. When I drop my son off at school, I want to feel that same thing -- that these people are there working for me in my place."

The North Carolina teacher has apologized, and the school district there is calling it a personnel matter.

Pretty unprofessional, even if the student is a loser. Teachers are supposed to be positive influences.

You are not there to be their fucking parent you are there to teach.... yet another case of an adult needing to use what little power they have to feel more important than they really are. I wonder if the parents that support this teaching style would do so still if he was teaching a special education class with the same methods. Of course not because THAT would be insensitive.

Anymore as long as you have time under your belt or involved with extra curricular activities usually nobody in the school administration will give a damn what you do, and if someone does no one will do anything to help you with a problem you are having.

For example the high school I attended a long time ago had a history teacher who would assign reading and outlining in his classes and that was it. After assignment he would go in the back chew tobacco and watch girls basketball videos, every year people complain and every year the school does nothing about it but he continues to retain his job because he is the girls basketball coach,

^ I know a few teachers like that myself, sadly. Sad

And, as has already been pointed out a couple times, this is completely unacceptable and unprofessional. The icing on the Fail Cake is that this was in middle school. It would be bad enough to do this to a teenager, but a little kid? Fuck you, dude.

Also, if this teacher is stupid enough to leave written evidence of how big an asshole he is, and then send that evidence home to the kid's parents, he is clearly too dumb to teach. Just saying.

A public school teacher no doubt. Those public school teachers and their damn teachers unions have so much job security its almost impossible to fire them. You could catch one screwing a student red handed and it would still be a year before they weren't getting a pay check from the state.

Exaggeration there. One thing that WILL get a teacher's ass handed to him/her superfast is the accusation of sleeping with or molesting a student. We've had a rash of that in my school district recently, and in each case the teacher is suspended immediately and without pay, before the investigation even starts. And of course, their careers are pretty well ruined even if they're eventually cleared.

Oh Christ, I had my MUSIC TEACHER call me an asshole on many occasions and even referenced me as an asshole for a while. Calling someone a loser in middle school is NOTHING compared to some of the more heinous shit you'll be put through by your classmates. Grow a chin, bitch!

I don't understand why you're emphasizing "music teacher" there, please explain.

And of course getting called a loser isn't even close to the worst shit kids have to deal with, but it's coming from a teacher. Comparing what's okay for a teacher to do to kids and what kids do to other kids (Not even what they're supposed to be doing) is just silly. Part of it is, he's paid to teach the kids and to maintain a healthy learning environment. Part of his job is to stop the kids from picking on each other. With that in mind, how the hell do you justify him picking on the kids?

Maybe it's because of all the teachers to call someone an asshole, I would think that it's least likely to come from someone who's supposed to bring out the beauty in someone's voice.

And I'm not making excuses for a teacher calling a kid a loser. But it's not that big of a deal. I went to a very run down public school and almost all my teachers had their hands tied behind their back whenever the kids would act up. You can't suspend half the class, because the parents always get involved and over emphasize what actually happened because they always side with their kids. How are we to know this girl didn't act out first and the teacher decided to fight fire with fire? We're hearing one side of the story.

As someone who is contemplating leaving the Marines to become a teacher this is disturbing. I see this all the time in the Marines, little punks who try to bring down others while they hide behind their rank. This disgusts me, and if I was a teacher who worked with this clown, I would definitely pull him to the side and give him a good "mutherfucking".

Well, Dodd, even if he is fighting fire with fire, I don't think that's at all acceptable. He's a professional, it doesn't matter what the kid did, it's completely unacceptable for him to resort to juvenille mudslinging like that. Just because the kid's a dink doesn't mean the teacher should ever be allowed to sink to their level.

It is juvenille and stupid for him to do, I agree. Personally, I think the mother is doing more damage by making this such a big spectacle. The thing that gets me is that 12 other parents side with the teacher. Either way, slow day for news...

Teachers are actually one of the only groups of people I respect based on their professions, along with police & firemen, and those who serve/served in the military. My teachers call us stuff like this all the time, but it's mostly joking around and we know that.

Yeah I'm with ToGdor, I mean I was a bit of an asshole in high school and constantly got in trouble with teachers and acted out and all that nonsense, I hated them and they probably didn't care too much for me. But I won't deny how stressful and difficult their job is, especially with how little they got paid. There were a few who were complete pieces of shit, but I can only count about 6 in my entire life that I really could not stand.

That reminds me of a part in Wild Things. Where the principal is like "All I can ya Sam is hang in there. They clear you of this mess you get reinstated..." And then Sam interrupts and says "The point is you never get clear of something like this. It stays with you, follows you around forever."

Yeah, but the statement had to do with something posted in the topic.

Speaking from experience in high school, when I can count less times people DIDN'T cheat off my papers or whatever, calling someone a loser in school is probably highly appropriate, actually. Unprofessional? Yeah. But you know, half the problem with schools is that parents demand the pussification of it. School does next to nothing (unless you go to college) to prepare you for jack shit beyond high school, and in many cases, yes, these kids are losers.

As an aside, it's quite frightening to know that some of the kids that used to cheat off my tests are now in occupations such as nursing and shit. If old habits die hard, so to speak, and they cheated their way through nursing school, I fear for the day I get checked out by a nurse who's much stupider than I am. "Sir, you have a hole in your, um, butt. We may need to operate."

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.
