this was unveiled today. cuz sony is so original

Among the many gameplay demos Sony just showed off for their newly christened PlayStation Move motion controller was Sports Champions, a compilation of athletic events very much along the lines of Wii Sports.
The first event from the game that Sony demonstrated today was Gladiator Duel, which used two Move controllers as a sword and shield in an arena-style, one-on-one fighting game. Vertical and horizontal swings of the right-hand remote appeared to trigger the same sword movements onscreen, while moving the left remote would adjust the position of the player's shield. A quick uppercut allowed the user to pull a Devil May Cry and juggle his opponent in the air. There were also maneuvers that would prompt canned animations, such as hiding the remotes behind the back to perform a taunt.
A version of table tennis was also on display during Sony's Sports Champions demo. It looked pretty much how you'd expect a modern, motion-controlled table tennis game to look, but the precision of the Move controller allowed for some impressive trick shots. The person demoing the game seemed to be able to pull off shots with all sorts of spin, and with varying degrees of power behind them.
In addition, an archery game was shown briefly during Sony's video montage of Move-supported games. Although it wasn't confirmed as one of the included games in Sports Champions, it seems like a no-brainer.
Look for full impressions on Sports Champions and the rest of Sony's Move lineup soon. |

In addition to Sports Champions (which, let's be honest, may as well be called "PS3 Sports," but you can't blame Sony for following the money), Sony also announced a slew of other games that'll use the PlayStation Move motion controller, including Move Party, Little Big Planet, EyePet, Motion Fighters, and the recently revealed SOCOM 4.
First up was Move Party, which seems to be an amalgam of random mini-games with a bit of a WarioWare vibe, but also the "augmented reality" style of games the PlayStation Eye (and EyeToy on the PS2) often featured. It shows the player on the screen in each mini-game, but with the Move controller replaced by what each mini-game requires. The demonstration included mini-games where the Move controller was used to swat bugs with a tennis racket, color in shapes as though it was a paintbrush, or, uh, cut someone's hair as though the controller was an electric clipper. Again, it was all very fast-paced in a WarioWare style.
Motion Fighter was about what the name implies. The player controlled the character with a behind-the-back view, and common-sense motions translated into the game -- throwing punches, crouching, leaning side-to-side, etc. You can change the aim of your punches, throw special kinds like hooks and uppercuts, or even throw a spinning elbow strike. Unfortunately, the spinning elbow didn't work the first time (precision!), but the player demoing the game got it to work on a second attempt.
Then there was SOCOM 4, where the Move controller was used to aim and a "sub-controller" -- basically like a wireless Wii nunchuck controller -- was used to move the character around (Sony has also clarified a Dual Shock can be used for movement in place of the sub-controller). The demo player looked to be in a pretty relaxed position, showing not every game would require big, exaggerated movements. Sony also stressed SOCOM 4 will also be playable with just a Dual Shock if the motion controls aren't appealing to everyone. In fact, Sony explained games could come with both a motion-control version and a standard version on the same Blu-ray disc.
Other games shown were Little Big Planet, where one player could control the Sackboy with a Dual Shock while another edited the level using a Move controller; and EyePet, where the controller was used to wash the pet, or to move around a trampoline for it to bounce on, and also to draw on the screen (to be honest, we didn't quite pick up how that affects the game). |

Interesting, but I highly doubt that it'll be as good as Nintendo's Wiimote, especially with the MotionPlus.

meh.. maybe it will produce something cool a few years down the road, but really at this point its just gimmicky. Any bets that a fitness game will be their first big marketing scheme?

Their remote looks like a dildo.
And an intensely motion-controlled fighting game like the one they describe is a terrible idea. If there was ever a video game that encouraged violence, it's that. If I get frustrated because my opponent beats me three times in a row, what's to stop me from throwing a real punch at him instead of a fake one? Absolutely nothing. And I would, too, because that's how I roll. I'd go sucker punch, groin stomp, then finish the game match for the win.

God damn motion controls. I'm telling you this nonsense will set the industry back years and 10 years from now, we'll all be saying, "Lol, what were they thinking?!"

There's no where else for the industry to go, aside from slightly prettier games. Hence, gimmick controllers.
I mean, what other innovations have we had in gameplay recently? Heavy Rain? Heavy Rain's not innovative. It's a really, really, ridiculously pretty version of Night Trap.
Personally, I'd like to see the industry set back 30 years, because I have the Pac-Man Fever. It's driving me crazy.

That's what they said when the PSone was new.
Innovations come in new ideas about gameplay mechanics within the game that have never been seen before, inventing new genres, marrying gaming with the internet for greater multiplayer connectivity, etc as well as graphical improvements
I wouldn't mind gimmick controllers so much as long as they weren't required to play the game. In 2010, a game shouldn't be frustrating to control and make you look like a complete jackass as a bonus. It's like we finally perfected the use of analog controllers for all games, and now they want to shake it up and start all over from the beginning with something that relies on technology we haven't figured out yet (wireless/infrared positioning).
Just about every Wii game I've played was hindered by the motion controls, not helped.

In response to knyte posting the steering wheel controller... I've always wanted to build a car, with a steering wheel controller in it and a tv screen so I actually felt like I was driving. I saw someone did that a while ago and I've been determined to do it.

Oh god, don't give them ideas, or bring things like that up!
Yeah, that thing definately looks like a dildo, I never see the point for motion controls, to me it actually makes the game not as fun to play. Sure it was cute to swing around the controller in Zelda, but fucking fishing would break your arm. In Mario Galaxy you only used it to launch yourself for the most part and the other times in the game where you used the MC to move, completely killed the enjoyment for me. Honestly, motion controls aren't that great despite me loving Wii, the motion controls just aren't very fun after the novelty wears off.
And honestly Playstation, you're about 4 years too fucking late. The real reason Wii sold so fucking well was because it was cheap and it was unique over the other 2 consoles. What do you plan to accomplish by copying Nintendo and still charging more than they do?

Yeah, honestly I'm much more likely to finally buy a wii than this thing. It'd allow me more access to games, rather than have the same sony games + miscellaneous motion games and some tacked on motion control. Though some of the videos of move look ok.

Some games really are better with motion controls. Bowling for example. I'd argue tennis as well. Others are not. Fighting games, for example.

Well, when it's simpler games like that...yeah. But any game with an actual story and diverse gameplay? Not so much.

Eh, it can. I still think Mario Galaxy is perfect. There have been decent FPS games that use the mote/chuk combo, but the control scheme still isn't as good as the classic Goldeneye one.

pricing
| Quote: |
It'll be available in three ways: a stand-alone package that comes with one controller for those who already own a PlayStation Eye (which is required to use the controller), a starter kit that comes with the Eye, one controller, and game; and an "ultimate bundle" with a PlayStation 3 console, Eye, controller, and game. Sony said pricing details would be announced later in the year, but they said they were targeting the starter kit to come in under $100. They also likened it to a "virtual console launch," indicating how hard they'll be pushing the controller with marketing at launch.
Sony didn't mention what game would be included with the starter or ultimate kit, but we'll update this story once we have more details. |

II still think that Namco-Bandai needs to jump on the bandwagon for a total Time Crisis re-release with either the Wii or the PS3 With updated graphics and the use of either of the Wii-Mote or this sad wii ripoff

I want more light gun games remade for the Wii. The Wii seems to more optimized for light gun games than this PS3 wand. The PS3 wand seems to be a straight motion controller. No buttons, no infra-red, just hot hardcore flailing action. I could be wrong though, I haven't read the specs.

It just seems like Nintendo hasn't taken full advantage of what they could be doing with motion controls. I want to fly a goddamn gyrocopter using the Wiimote, right now!

I just can't see this shit ever catching on. Some things don't need to change, and videogame controllers are one of them. Yet the industry seems hell bent on shoving motion controls and 3D down our throats. Sure the Wii sold a lot of units, but from what I've seen most of them are now gathering dust. I'm sure I'll get gang-raped for saying that, but the Wii sold well because it was different and cheap. How many of those buyers will be back next time around? The diehards will be, but I bet a lot of those people are saying "fool me once...."
