It seems like in every game they have someone they describe as "having a strong sense of justice and is good at cheering everyone up when things seem the darkest".

Eh, this has probably been said before but, mourning Aeris' death aside Cloud seemed more goofy then anything. He always tried to act cool but failed. Not in an obvious anime way, but in a more subtle way. I can't really consider the guy emo when his final speech to his group finished with "Let's mosey!". Just me though. Everything else seems to fit though.

What about the Ninja class? I know some can cross over from other classes, but ninjas were alway an important part of the earlier games:

FF1: Thief becomes a Ninja
FF3: Ninja Job
FF4: Edge
FF5: Ninja Job
FF6: Shadow
FF7: Yuffie Kisaragi

Yeah... once you get to FF7 the ninja's just go down hill... you don't even need her to beat the game.
I never really thought of Cecil to be the sullen asshole, so much as to qualify him in the same grounds as Squall or Cloud. He was more confused if anything, and if that makes him a sullen asshole then damn.
What about the "Hot chick that has an odd attraction to the sullen asshole?"

Cecil is not not an EMO!!!!!!

He is a proud Knight who is torn between honor and duty. He proudly serves as Captain of the Red Wings for a noble and just ruler. When the ruler suddenly starts ordering Cecil to do things that no longer just, and against Cecil's moral code, he becomes torn. On one hand he is sworn to serve King and Country, on the other he is also probably sworn to protect the innocent. When those two conflict, his world begins to crumble.

He is nothing like Cloud or Squall!

He is more akin to a Noble Samurai who suddenly finds himself serving the wrong Daimyo. The only thing he can do, is continue to serve under silent protest, or kill himself.

I have to admit that although I didn't really care for FF8, I liked Squall. He was a cynical prick and introverted, and pretty much a jerk, but I thought the way he gradually opened up to Rinoa was a good story. (I think I saw a lot of myself in Squall when I was a few years younger, which might be why I identified with him in some ways).

That said, it seemed like Squall's character development came at the expense of all the others. He was really the only character who evolved in that game, which is a big part of why it wasn't that good overall.

I agree with this, but only because of Rosa. He starts down the path, but she snaps him right the fuck out of it. I probably wouldn't call him "emo" past the prologue.

I don't think this is a flaw in the game. I'd much rather have things focus on one primary protagonist, instead of having a bunch of side stories where everyone "develops" (Quina Quen, NOBODY gives a fuck about you!).

That said, there is one other character in the game that experienced a lot of character development: Seifer.

It's been a long time since I've played FF8, but I don't recall Seifer even being in the game all that much. The rivalry between he and Squall was interesting in the beginning of the game, but then it seemed like he kind of just faded out of the plot and became fairly irrelevant. He would pop up now and then to menace Squall and the team, but generally he didn't seem like a main antagonist compared to the sorcoresses. But maybe I need to play through it again.

God, I unfailingly hate whoever is the 'perky idiot' of whatever FF I'm playing. (Although I do have a slight soft spot for Rikku, but she still annoys the shit out of me.)

Also, how can you bring up Kickass Quiet Guy and not mention Auron???

He's not on screen a lot, but he does develop as a character. Final Fantasy 8 doesn't flat-out tell you things, it more hints at them. But Seifer, and what he does and why, is pretty interesting. At least to me.

There's a reason he's on the box too.

His being on the box may be part of the reason why I thought he was under-represented in the game. When I first saw the game, I kind of figured he was going to be the "Sephiroth" of FF8, and it didn't turn out that way. Or at least not in the same way.

This has definitely got me wanting to play through it again, though......I've been wanting to for a while. It's been 6 or 7 years since I've played it, and I can see there's a lot that I'm forgetting.

I agree completely, although I bear more hatred for the wacky throwaway characters. Cait Sith, Quina, and those damn Moogles in FF8 (although at least they weren't playable).

You know, I never minded the wacky guys nearly as much. I think that was because they generally had far less dialogue, and were (almost) never required in your party. They usually weren't even required to GET. The perky person, on the other hand, was always completely integral to the plot, and you could NOT escape her.

Ugh, this just reminded me of how much I hate FF X-2...they took one of the greatest FF stories they've ever told, in a completely unique and fascinating world...and turned the sequel into an ENTIRE FARKING GAME of Perky Idiots. For shame, Square. For Shame. Sadly no

I don't mind the "wacky throwaway characters" as long as they KNOW THEIR ROLE, so to speak. Gau is a good example for me...he was off-kilter, supposed to be funny, had an interesting mechanic, and a little side-story thing that didn't detract from the game. I really don't like Gau, but I don't mind him in the game at all. He does his job.

Quina, though, pisses me off to no end. In a game with several fantastic characters, with very interesting backstories, how fucking DARE you give joke character Quina at least two fucking backstory-sidequests while leaving interesting characters like Freya and Amarant hanging?

The perky one I can usually stand (as comic relief), so long as they don't go off the fucking deep end like Selphie.

Agree, and agree. I quite liked Gau for what he was too. He wasn't my favorite, but he did his job, they never overdid his jokes, and I was never irritated by him. (Although really, I have to admit that in FF VI, Gogo and Umaro fulfil this character-type better than Gau does. I wasn't irritated by them either though.)

I never really cared all that much about Amarant as a character (nothing against him, he just never grew on me--maybe its just because you get him so late in the game), but I was super-pissed that we never got to do much for Freya besides visit Burmacia and watch a few cutscenes. Grrrr.

Hehehe yes, with the caveat that his arm is not broken. He holds his arm that way because he's a badass, and he feels like it. Ghosts can't have broken arms, after all, and you'll note that, while he carries his sword with one hand and his shoulder, he always swings it with two. Wink

lol ok i thought so. but i got curious and this explanation is what i read ages ago as to why his arm was in a sling
Quote:
Auron's character design calls to mind the quintessential "wandering ronin"; he bears more than a passing resemblance to the "Sanjuro" character played by actor Toshiro Mifune in the film Yojimbo. Both allow one sleeve to dangle empty while concealing the arm inside their robe, a ronin characteristic referring to the loss of a master (the symbolic loss of the sword arm).

his page is been revamped since then in wikipedia, so it doesnt mention it anymore, but i found that in an FF forum http://www.finalfantasyforums.net/kh-ii/auron-13355-page2.html

Auron was awesome, X should have been about him. I think FF should have an older rugged guy for a main character. I liked Quina in IX, she had some great comedic moments, especially in those Active Time Event things.

That's why I used Basch instead of Vaan on XII.
