I have never played a 2D Metroid! WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT?

Agreed. The original is good for nostalgia purposes but the latter is just the better game.

super metroid might be one of the best games on that console.

the NES metroid sucks, so skip that. they totally remade it on the GBA as metroid: zero mission. that one was good. metroid fusion on the GBA kinda sucked but was alright if you find it cheap. (gamestop sells it for five dollars). I really don't remember much about metroid II on the game boy because I haven't played it since I was six.

The NES Metroid didn't suck, it was a total classic. However those under thirty may just be unable to appreciate it.

it's only a classic because it was unique for it's time. Compare it to zero mission and tell me that a single thing that they've changed for the remake isn't immediately better.

I'm guessing you're under thirty, er uh, excuse me, twenty-five.

I am twenty five.

pointing out my age only proves my point that, once again, the original was only such a timeless classic because it was new and innovative for it's time. by today's standards, it's a shitty game.

You are trying to say that I would have had to have "been there" to "get it." and I am saying that it was a clunky, frustrating mess of a game when compared to any of it's sequels, or even similar games that came out afterwards.

my god, you couldn't even duck or aim diagonally, and most enemies were shorter than you.

Haha, ya, this has been always been my biggest issue with the game.

Yeah, I'm 25 too, but that isn't really as important. I don't think all remakes are better than the originals, just this one.

I used to be terrified of the music on the original Metroid title screen. Fuck that shit, that's the music that plays when demons come through a hole in the ground in my nightmares.

That the appeal of the original: the bizarre enemies, the creepy minimalist score, the effective use of blackspace. The game was about as eerie as an NES game could be.

I don't see how a frustrating design flaw is a high point of a game, syd. I could understand if it was implimented purposely later on in the game to fuck with you, but these were the base enemies for the entirety of the game.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but the overuse of black and teh minimalist score was probably more due to the limits of the cart than design choices.

I don't feel that ALL remakes are better than the originals, but zero mission DEFINITELY is an improvement on it's precursor. I've played and beaten both games, and after playing zero mission, I honestly feel that there is absolutely no reason to play the NES one anymore.

I have a damn good reason: Because I can. Also, regarding the short enemies: Ever heard of Bombs?

I know some of you will burn me at the stake, but I never played any 2D metroid games. I started at prime and never looked back... And then I found this website and everyone fucking loves them. So I am contemplating whether or not to go back and play them. They never looked that great... Is that a horrible thing to say?

You know you have done wrong if you have to ask. Now go say fifty hail Marys, give yourself 30 lashes and play 16 hours of Super Metroid,

you don't get bombs for a while in the original metroid. running around before you get bombs, the long beam, or any extra energy can be a real frustrating time, considering you can't duck.

The fact that Long Beam is a powerup is the dumbest idea in the original game.

I love the Metroid style Castlevanias but for some reason I just can't sit through Metroid.

THIS

and i have to agree w/FNJ. the original is only good if you were there the first time around. if its your first time, it might put you off because of the design decisions. i wont even mention the fucking password system
