http://abcnews.go.com/International/baby-death-alleged-result-parents-online-games-addiction/story?id=10007040

Quote:
South Korea was in shock today after police arrested a couple Wednesday for child neglect that allegedly caused their 3-month-old daughter to starve to death. The husband, 41, and wife, 25, were addicted to online games, spending up to 12 hours every night at Internet cafes, police said.

Known only as the Kims because their first names are protected under Korean privacy law, the couple met in 2008 on an Internet chat Web site. Throughout their marriage and birth of their baby daughter in June 2009, the couple, both unemployed, lived with the wife's parents. The Kims spent most of their time playing Internet games at local cafes called "PC bangs," even during the wife's pregnancy, officials said.

...

"They called in last September to report that they found their daughter dead after coming back home in the morning," Det. Chung Jin-Won of the Suwon Seobu Police Station said. "They had spent 12 hours, all night at a PC bang."

An autopsy by the National Institute of Scientific Investigation concluded that their daughter's death resulted from malnourishment. The Kims also confessed to police that they had been feeding rotten, powdered milk and had often spanked their crying baby.

Neglecting their daughter, who was born prematurely, the parents were instead preoccupied with raising a "virtual daughter" through an online game called "PRIUS,"' police authorities said. The multi-role-playing game allows players to choose a job, interact with others in the virtual world and even earn an extra avatar or a sub-character to nurture once they reach a certain level.

Emphasis added. They should never have had a baby in the first place.

I'm all for requiring people to take a test and acquire a license before being legally allowed to have a child. There are just way too many fucked up people having kids and thus giving birth a new fucked up generation that is growing exponentially.

Then again, doesn't it strike anyone else as odd that it says they were living with her parents? Where were he parents while the child was starving to death? Shouldn't they be held responsible as well?

Honestly it doesn't sound like these parents are very remorseful for what they've done. They didn't care about her before and now that she's gone it seems like they have an "huh, she's gone. Lets go check on our virtual baby!" attitude.

I realize this happened in Korea but I think our government should give licenses to people to have children. Obviously they can't make it required for people to get said licenses before having children but it should carry benefits and a status symbol that make it so desirable and beneficiary to have one and those who don't have one of these licenses and have children will look bad. So more people will go after it because most people don't like to have blows to their Ego.
I think some of the benefits it should carry are, Discounts on medical supplies, clothes, and food needed to care for such child until they are no longer in your care.
Imagine walking into a walmart or something, getting ready to pay for the clothes you just bought for your child and the cashier says "Okay, now please hand me your child license so I can discount the total" now what would you rather say "okay here it is" or "Um...I don't have one" and then the cashier giving you a dirty look as well as the people that overheard it

EDIT: I forgot to mention that they will only be issued to those who go to a seminar and pass a test on baby care

The government is the last place I would think qualified to give birthing licenses. The whole thing would loose purpose and simply become a tax on having children because you know they can't administer anything for free.

As tragic as this is I have to laugh. The stupid people let their live baby starve to death because they were too busy leveling up their sim-baby. This is the most rediculous thing ever.

As much as I like the idea, I get the feeling that if licenses were mandated for childbirth, it would be Prohibition all over again.

Yeah, but without mandatory tube tying that can be reversed once you're approved how in the world would you police it? I'm pretty sure people would be all up in arms over that shit. Confused

I know people would be up in arms about it because people are retarded. The single biggest threat to the planet right now is overpopulation, not global warming or gay marriage. Africa will never get on its feet because they can't stop crapping out kids and even the US is starting to become crowded. China recognized the problem a long time ago and implemented their one child policy that has been pretty successful for them. They manage to enforce it, so why can't we?

My idea is just requiring a license for every child that you have. Every time you plan to have a child, you must take a state mandated test about basic parenting, they do a background check to verify your income, make sure you're not a convicted felon, etc, and if you pass, you get the license. If you fail, you don't get to have a child. If you do anyway, you go to prison.

If you're already pregnant and fail the test, you'll be forced to get an abortion. That would help prevent accidental pregnancies by a large margain. If you fail the test say, 3 different times, then you get your tubes tied. I'd also like to see a maximum of three kids per couple unless they're extraordinarily rich and can prove they have enough time to have more.

I want to live in a world where crazy Octomom (who lives with her parents and whose money goes toward cosmetic surgery to look more like Angelina Jolie) was never allowed to have 6 children, let alone 8 more for a total of 14. 14 screwed up kids we have to live with now that should never have existed.

Everything else is policed and regulated, so why isn't this? Reproduction is not a basic human right in my opinion because it impacts every other member of society. There are just too many screwed up parents out there. In my system, the good parents will still be able to have kids, while the fucked up ones won't. Simples.

Come on, Panda...

China? I'm sure the practice of drowning girl babies is still happening somewhere in that country. Although, maybe they've become a little more hi-tech by using abortion clinics. There is no way America and it's religious-crazy lawmakers would ever regulate procreation. Bush wouldn't even pass stem-cell research.

America loves God, guns, and goo (fetuses).

OK, what about the issue of that large of a degree of control over people's lives being in the hands of a select few? That kind of power could easily be corruptible to whoever wielded it. What if you were told that you didn't qualify to legally sire children due to some arbitrary reason and were forced by the state to get sterilized? How would you feel about it then? Would you form some sort of guerrilla impregnation organization, or would you sit back and assume that the people in charge know whats best for you?

No, all we need is a documentary film from a popular bleeding heart guy to raise awareness about it in theaters.

That same group of people already govern every other aspect of your life. Want to be able to drive a car? You need a license. Want to add an extention onto your garage? You need a license. Want to hunt or fish at certain times of the year? You need a license. Even when you get a job, you technically need to be allowed to work by the government.

Why is this any different? Why is the single most important thing a human can do (creating and supporting a new life) that has huge impacts on society as a whole completely off limits to run wild? Government social workers already have the power to deem certain people unfit parents after the kid is born, so why can't we do it before there's a child involved who has to endure that pain and be screwed up for the rest of his/her life?

Everyone wants to stop homelessness, hunger, and crime without realizing the best way to do that is to stop allowing fucked up people to have fucked up kids who end up on the street and in prisons.
