I think that game is hard just because it's damn near unplayable.

Zelda II.
I never got the hammer (which is probably only like 15% of the way through the game) without using Game Genie. Never beat the game either way.

For the N64?
It was frustrating at times but not that bad.

Though it's just a puzzle game, Hexic HD was pretty tough to beat unless you have a lot of patience.
For me, the hardest games are pretty much any racing game ever except for the goofier ones that give you powerups, like Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing for the N64. I swear that I have absolutely no luck in those games. I'll be driving in a straight line on a safe road and suddenly my car will become possessed or something and flip over and crash into a big flaming ball visible from space.

Ninja Gaiden on the XBOX. It may be very hard at first but if you take it on, you'll realize it's fucking wonderful. If you set it so they speak in Japanese with Eng subs, it makes the whole experience so much better.
I still haven't managed to get all the golden scarabs which unlock all the NES Ninja Gaidens, but just see if i don't!

The US release of 7th Saga has a nasty glitch that doesn't level you up as much as it should. Your opponents, though, do. That's one of the main reasons it's such a bitch.

Oh yeah. That game is murder on Normal, Hell on Hard, and Suicide on Very Hard. Those extra characters will never be unlocked in my game. I got maybe 3 of them.

After 5 years of trying, I eventually did beat story mode on very hard and beat all the cups on master in 2008. I can proudly say I have a completed F-Zero GX game.

This explains some things. When I was a kid my mom made me take the game back to the rental store because I spent an entire half hour just yelling at the game. Like not even playing anymore, I was just wringing it out.

Wesker from RE5 (in all his incarnations) is a bitch to beat.
I didn't find Rygar particularly difficult...up until the final boss. Then it's just insane.

As a matter of fact I beat that game, playing as Lux(the robot) with Esuna on your side(the elf).
The ending is lame, you get sent back in time, fight the endboss, which is like a giant green guy with chains, and get killed. But, your soul is reincarnated into a new body, which becomes the king who is killed and impersonated in the beginning of the game. That is to say, your reward is a bloody stable time loop.
You've got to be quick, avoid overleveling, pick your partner right, and generally get lucky because the biggest danger in the entire game is not the enemies but your rival. So let me explain...
At different points in the game, one of the seven playable characters will be selected as an enemy. The dungeon at about the same time that you get the water rune is the one that's guaranteed, but the sky rune can be picked up if you wait too long(in game timer), and theres other situations like that. Now then, unlike most enemies, this rival's level will be several above yours no matter what, and they get an HP boost. Now then, depending on the rival, this can be a killer. Esuna can wipe in a single shot, and take more hits than you can, the dwarf is really tough, but the worst is Valsu(the priest). At a certain level, he'll learn the spell elixir, an expensive spell that restores his HP and MP. You simply CANNOT kill him fast enough to keep him from using it, and as "bosses", mutes and the like do not work. HE IS LITERALLY UNBEATABLE.
The game gets harder at world two, but you can at least grit your teeth through it. Its the shenanigans above that make it a bitch dejour.

There's a hack/patch that fixes that 7th Saga bug. I haven't tried it yet but it's supposed to make the game actually playable.

Hmmmmm, I guess the hardest I've played is either Shiren the Wanderer or Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Thing is though, they're both fun hard, since I friggin' love the challenge of a good RPG.

The first time I played Touhoumon Lunatic, I wandered around Viridian Forest for over 20 hours without making any fucking progress whatsoever because you can't see shit there.
I had to look at a walkthrough to find the fucking way out. When I finally reached Pewter City my party was level 27.

Try beating 7th Saga without a second ally. Holy shit!

How about Q-bert? And of course the before mentioned Ghosts 'n Goblins. And Battletoads of course. I don't know about Ninja Gaiden however. I think I remember beating that game a long time ago and I don't remember it being insanely hard.

I remeber being very frustrated by Battletoads as a kid. I wanted to finish it but I never did. I remeber going to the sewers, and riding some snakes, but I never finished it.
Also I remember being totally determined to beat The Toxic Crusaders and it was impossible.
What I most remember is the feeling of frustration that came from losing one and again in those games, but there are probably more....
I think R-Type III was pretty hard too.....

I'd have to go with Sky Shark. That game was a complete bitch, it took me until 2 years ago to beat it, and I've been playing it for 12 years. There's only 5 levels for God's sakes
