Me and my friend Tyler were playing a marathon of Super C last night (no we did not beat it) and I have officially decided that that is the hardest contra game. Can anyone think of a harder game (Iwannabetheguy does not count)... N counts though because it is fucking sweet and an incredibly hard platformer.

Super C is absolutely easy compared to most of the NES library.
Hardest game I've played, and made any sort of progress in, is La-Mulana. On the NES, though, I'd probably give it to Ninja Gaiden.

you call super c easy, I beat ninja gaiden when I was 7 and was stuck at my grandmas over spring break ALL THREE OF THEM! It's easy if you don't try and rush it also if you have a twitchy finger, but god do I hate those dogs.

F-Zero GX's story mode, Silver Surfer, and Contra: Hard Corps are high up there for me. There's Dirty Harry on NES too, but that's because it's a glitched up pile of shit.

Super C and Ninja Gaiden are my two candidates.

I would probably give it to Ninja Gaiden. It was my New Year's Resolution to finally beat it this year and I did, but only after about a decade of frustrating deaths.

I second La-Mulana. I mapped almost the whole fucking dungeon, including the text of every tablet and what the character say. I think I beat 7 bosses, it's been a while since I last played.
Still had to look at a FAQ because a fucking skeleton wouldn't repeat his fucking riddle and I hadn't written it down, so I didn't know what the fuck to do with the pepper.
Then there's stuff like Bart's Nightmare, a game in which I never managed to do anything, or Civilization II, but that's more because I really suck at it.
And if you count hacks, there's obviously Kaizo Mario 1 and 2, and that Pokemon hack that makes you fight a level 100 Groundon with a level 50 Muk.

He said it was ridiculous, not hard. "Hard" could have an entirely different meaning for him.

7th Saga. If you even think of playing as a non fighting class you just lose.

I'm sure there's other games that are probably harder but from a standpoint of games I put the most effort into beating and go nowhere close to finishing:
Ghosts and Goblins
Super Ghouls and Ghosts
But I think Rygar takes the cake, I really thought this game had potential to be good if it didn't have so much bullshit going on.

I agree on the Ghosts and Golbins, Ninja Gaiden Black was a mother too.

If you know when and where to grind for experience it isn't that hard at all. Killing the robots in one of the areas levels you up very quickly and makes the game a breeze afterwards.
I would agree with Ninja Gaiden III being one of the hardest. The first was difficult, but at least it had unlimited continues. The third was just as difficult as the first in terms of game play, but the limited continues made it that much worse.

Is it weird that I never found Ninja Gaiden that hard? I'm not trying to boast here, I just...never really did. (I think a lot of it has to do with being one of the first games I ever got, and so I played it to death as a kid and got quite good. I can still do a pretty good beat-the-game run to this day.)
BattleToads as a GAME wasn't terribly hard...it was the individual, impossible MOMENTS that made that thing such a bitch to play.
For me personally, Contra is still the hardest game I've consciously tried to sit down and get good at. I just suck at it, majorly, and have yet to actually beat the damn thing, Konami Code or no. (The original TMNT game is more frustrating, but I can't say its "harder" because I've actually beaten that one.)

Not as hard as it was completely terrible and gained a rep in Japan as one of the shittiest games of all time.
