Well if they were stupid enough to never check behind the massive bales of hay he should have never stopped hiding it.

well, he figured he was in the clear.
'its been 4 years, squatters law indicates i am owner of this castle, no need to hide it anymore.'
moves bales of hay. thats considered construction work, so the 4 year rule is null & void apparently and now he got screwed

I would have kept it hidden, the only thing cooler than a castle is a secret castle.

Did they seriously nail him on moving the hay counting as construction? Damn. I would have just brought in some cows for a few weeks...

I'm sorry, that doesn't look like a castle to me.
That looks like a house made out of brick that is a little fancier than usual. What exactly is the definition of castle in this law. There are houses near here that look similar, and I never considered them castles.

"no local residents had complained about the castle." So, umm, who exactly gives a shit? I get it if his neighbors were pissed. I know if some jackass built a big, gaudy castle right next to my house I 'd be pissed. Of course I live in the middle of a city. This guy, however, seems to live in the country (at least judging by the fact his attempt at concealment was bales of hay and no one seemed to complain about that either). I say, no harm, no foul.

That's a bullshit ruling, and wouldn't stand in American court. If moving hay counts as unauthorized construction, then moving any bale of hale ever would count as unauthorized construction via precedent. The British law system is a complete piece of shit. That's why celebrities always sue for slander and libel over there.

i agree, but its technically not untrue either. i dont think there is a clear definition as to what construction work is. technically, taking the trash out is construction work since you are improving the inside of the house.
is it bullshit? yes. does it qualify as construction work? unfortunately, yes, because its an improvement on the property

Yeah that's pretty retarded, would I need a construction permit to rearrange the furniture in my living room? (if I had any)

I disagree with that just a bit.
American courts are getting close to being just as bad as UK courts.
Just the other day i was listening to the radio and some girl got 100k out of suing a strip bar because she got drunk and the bar didn't stop her from driving and smashing her car into...I forget. The court ruled in her favor even after the strip bar proved her testimony of them not stopping her false

I completely agree; his land, his decision. unfortunately, allowing that would allow every idiot to build an amusement park (how did Michael Jackson do it?) on their land resulting in countless deaths of said idiots and their seed (bad thing?) It all boils down to money. get the inspection, correct any safety violations, and force him to obtain an Ipso Facto permit. then he can set up a property tax payment plan with the gov't. they (gov't) would be fools to order the destruction of it. especially due to the owner's stubborn mentality. if pursued, they would be forced to spend even more money destroying it themselves since he refuses. i say he should stick to his guns and fight to keep it. but as an example, he should have to make some concessions. I am curious to know how old the law is.
I have always hated residential zoning restrictions in "non-neighborhoods". I think that they are simply there to force people to pay additional taxes and fees and to give some people power over others. This is true for anywhere.
It would be a damn shame to destroy the man's home. Instead, charge him back-taxes and a penalty fee.

kind of.
the owner of a flower shop down in tucson did something people complained about. the flower shop has a small board out front where he puts up different specials and deals and what not. so, one day the owner got mad and put "i hate sand niggers" or something to that effect (my cop buddy was telling me about this) and they were called in to have a talk with him. technically, he can do whatever the fuck he wants, but its right on the corner of a busy intersection, so of course people complained. they finally convinced him to take it down

something like that. he hid his skyscraper in plain sight, on an 'abandoned' lot
