I know some of you will burn me at the stake, but I never played any 2D metroid games. I started at prime and never looked back... And then I found this website and everyone fucking loves them. So I am contemplating whether or not to go back and play them. They never looked that great... Is that a horrible thing to say?

super metroid might be one of the best games on that console.

the NES metroid sucks, so skip that. they totally remade it on the GBA as metroid: zero mission. that one was good. metroid fusion on the GBA kinda sucked but was alright if you find it cheap. (gamestop sells it for five dollars). I really don't remember much about metroid II on the game boy because I haven't played it since I was six.

depends on how old you are.

a lot of us love the 2d metroid games because we grew up w/them. so they have a nostalgia factor involved.

they arent bad games at all, but if you wanted to experience the whole thing, you can probably play Metroid Zero Mission (remake of NES metroid) and then go to Super Metroid.

you can start w/the NES metroid, but it would seem very archaic in terms of design.

Just last week, I played through all five 2D Metroids one after another and quite enjoyed myself.

The second metroid was much more linear then the first one, only thing was since it was still in it's infancy as a series, it's not well defined. No map may get you confused unless, you know that you have to keep going down in the game (theoretically). Other then that, it's a fun game to play and the various forms of metroids are pretty cool.

Fusion, was technically my reintroduction to the series, since I never really got to play Super Metroid, but it really is downgraded to easy because I want to say they weren't really sure how the consumers of today would feel with a hardcore Nostalgic Metroid game. But I liked it, it was fun and had a nice little plot twist.

I'd agree with starting with Zero Mission then Super Metroid. Only issue is, once you skip up to Super Metroid, you kind of are obligated to play the second metroid since it's a direct sequel, not like Zelda, where you can start at anyone of the games and be alright. But if you don't play the second one, then no harm no foul since Super Metroid's introduction scene is one that explains a lot more then some other games.

im pretty sure the timeline goes like this:

Other M > Prime trilogy > metroid or zero mission > metroid 2 > super metroid > metroid fusion.

I played through the first one when it came out. It was unique at the time, but not something I would do again. When you were hand drawing the maps it was hard as crap. The second one is an easier version of the first one in my opinion, but again, at the time I liked it. I would gladly play Super Metroid or the GBA Metroid games again any day. I played Zero Mission numerous times to get all the end screens and never grew tired of it. It rewards you for doing difficult challenges that people had set for themselves in the earlier games.

I agree with the earlier posts, Zero Mission is the best place to start. Super Metroid really set the tone for the rest of the 2D Metroids though, and it stands pretty well against the test of time, at least to me. You should give that a try too. Only play the original and the Gameboy sequel if you are into playing retro games or enjoy games from that time. They are definitely dated, and you probably won't enjoy them unless you grew up playing them.

I've never played any of the Metroid games really. I just never got into them as I found the NES Metroid way too hard for my 7 year old brain so therefore skipped all subsequent ones. I did buy and play Prime for about an hour though, but for some reason, just never stuck with it.

I do plan on playing the Prime trilogy as soon as I'm reunited with my Gamecube and really should play though Super Metroid too.

Yeah, Metroid was one of those "you really had to be there" sort of games. It was one of the few non-RPG games out there with a decent amount of game time behind it.

I got Metroid and Faxanadu at the same time, so naturally I didn't end up playing Metroid for about a year after I got it. Because Faxanadu is awesome. Hardcore.

Faxanadu is so good. It's better game than Metroid, and arguably just as creepy. That part where you go inside the tree, with the fog? Holy shit.

I've played both Metroid and Super Metroid.

I played Super Metroid so long ago i don't even have an opinion of it and i find Metroid to be incredibly tedious and unenjoyable to play.

In my opinion, the Prime series doesn't hold a candle to the 2D titles. Fusion is my favorite, followed by Zero Mission, then Return of Samus. I've yet to play Super, but I'm working on that.

Castlevania's "Castleroid" titles are excellent as well. Very similar to 2D Metroid, only you use Whips and Swords as compared to an Armcanon. If you like one, you'll probably like the other.

I only own two Metroid games, both of which I beaten twice: Prime 3 and Super. If I could only choose one to play for the rest of my life, I would pick Super.

One reason is the fact that I can pinpoint the location where Metroid Prime 3 made me physically nauseas- both times I played it.

I have played the three first, but not the gba metroids, and I would recommend you to just play Super Metroid. There is not much story going on in these games, so its not necessary to begin at the start really, and if you like Super Metroid then you might try the others. And you will like Super Metroid, because its one of the best games ever.

I've only beaten the first Metroid Prime, I really liked it but never got around to the sequels. Not so big on the 2D Metroids, they just bore me.

The NES Metroid didn't suck, it was a total classic. However those under thirty may just be unable to appreciate it.

it's only a classic because it was unique for it's time. Compare it to zero mission and tell me that a single thing that they've changed for the remake isn't immediately better.
