I figured that this would be helpful, considering some guys are getting interested in the engine.

you can download mugen here:
www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/winmugen.rar

once you get that you'll no doubt notice that your screen is rediculously small.

go into your mugen folder, go into the "data" folder, open up your "mugen.cfg" in notepad, and look for the line that says [video win].

make it look like this if you want it to open fullscreen.
Quote:
;-------------------------------------------------------
[Video Win]
;Enter the width and height of the resolution you want to set here.
;The optimal resolution is 320x240, but if your video card has problems
;You may want to try 320x240
Width = 640
Height = 480

;This is the color depth at which to run MUGEN. You should set it to
;16 bit color unless your video card has problems with it.
;16-fastest, 24,32-slower, 8-slowest/worst
Depth = 16

;Set this parameter to 0 to disable screen stretching, and set it to 1 if
;you want to scale it up to fit the current resolution.
Stretch = 1

;Set this parameter to use a resolution-doubling filter. You will
;need a fast machine to use these filters. You will need to increase
;the screen resolution to at least 640x480 for these modes.
;0 - off
;1 - diagonal edge detection
;2 - bilinear filtering
;3 - horizontal scanlines
DoubleRes = 2

;DirectX mode
;Choose from Hardware, Software, Windowed, Overlay, Safe and None
;Hardware and Software run in full-screen. Windowed and Overlay
;run in a window. The windowed modes require you to set Depth to
;whatever color depth you are using for you desktop. The best results
;are when you run in 16-bit color. There is no advantage to running
;in 32-bit color. If Hardware, Software and Windowed fail, try Safe.
;None uses GDI to draw, so it's very slow. Use None only if
;you cannot get anything else to work.
;Overlay is not supported by all video cards, but can be faster than
;Windowed if it works.
DXmode = hardware

;Set to 1 to enable vertical retrace synchronization. Do not enable
;if BlitMode = PageFlip.
VRetrace = 0

;Drawing mode
;Choose from Normal and PageFlip
BlitMode = PageFlip

you can actually put the doublerez up to 4 (even though it only says up to 3 here) and that makes some stuff (like the guilty gear characters) look sexy. the downfall to this is that some of the sprites, like the SNK styled ones (mostly noticeable with the KOF guys) look crappy. This is also more noticeable on the older Darkstalkers and Street Fighter 2 sprites. also, my screenpack's fonts get really tiny in doublerez=4 and it screws some things up for me. most sprites, like the Street Fighter III, Street fighter Alpha, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, and even Rage of the Dragons guys look fine in at least doublerez=2, so that's what I recommend, even if it costs the Guilty Gear guys.

It's probably a good idea while your working on the mugen to keep it in windowed mode. You can always hit Alt+Enter to make it fullscreen, like windows media player.

next thing you'll notice is that your character select screen only has space for like twelve characters. this is good for beginning, and once you get more characters there's a folder labeled "big" in your "Data" folder. you can move that "system.def" into your main data folder, repalcing your old one and it will give you a 60 slot character select screen. by the time you get too many characters for that, you'll probably want to expand anyways and get a screenpack. More on that later.

You can download characters all over the place, and if you want, I can even swap characters with you later on.

one great place for mugen is the Mugen infantry. Most of the mods are tightassed douchebags, but they have a (mostly) up to date database of most of hte mugen characters on the web. They also have a request forum once you start getting deeper into things, but like I said, prepare to deal with people that hail hitler more than the mods here.
http://www.mugen-infantry.net/

to help get you started I uploaded some of my favorite characters to THI:

-Athena from KOF 2002
www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/athena02.rar

-Cable from Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Just like in the game, he's only a 4 button character.
www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/Cable_MVC2.rar

-Jill Valentine made to play like a Capcom vs. SNK 2 character with groove select
www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/cvsjill.rar

-Jimmy Lee from Rage of the Dragons www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/jimmylee.rar

-Ky Kisuke from Guilty Gear X
www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/KY_GGX.rar

-Psylocke from Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/Psylocke1.rar

-Sakura from Street fighter, with every move she's ever had at her disposal. Plays like a Capcom Vs SNK character.
www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/Sakura.rar

-Superman, plays like a Marvel Vs. Capcom character. www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/Superman01.rar

-"Master" Ryu. He get's the same treatment that Sakura got, just a little different. picking him regularly makes him regular Ryu, holding start and picking him with any button but Strong Punch makes him Evil Ryu, and holding start and pickign him with Strong Punch makes him Master Ryu, who has every single move Ryu and Evil Ryu have ever had and then some.
www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/Ryu.rar

-Asuka from Askuka 120% I don't know what to say about this character.
www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/asuka.rar

-Balrog (boxer) from Street fighter Alpha 3, complete with -ISM select.
www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/balrog.rar

unzip these guys and throw their folders into your "chars" folder, then go back into your "data" folder and open up your "select.def" and find the spot towards the top for adding characters. it's pretty much self explanatory there for the more advanced things (like making it so that you always fight a certain character on a specific stage) but what it doesnt tell you is that you don't have to type out the whole thing to add a character anymore. for example, to add asuka, it would have you typing the following:
Quote:
asuka, chars/asuka.def

you really only have to type "asuka" now.

keep your characters on their own lines, or it wont work. so it'll lok like this (but with your own characters)

Quote:
guile
JinSaotome
mechzang
roll
rubyheart
Amingo
chrisredfield
hiryu
Hien
ihiryu
evilken
evilryu
mechgouki
HAYATO
tbonne
sonson
ChunLi
carnage
smanbeta1
Psylocke1
Shumag
CapAmerica
batman
Lobo
thor
Superman
guido
Cyclops
Blackheart
venom
magneto
juggy
iceman
storm
RogueSp
0SENTI
wolverine2
spiderman2
USAgent
Ice
DrDoom
bane
glguy
colossusEX
hulk
konel
omega
gambit
beast

make sure that the character's .def and the folder they are in are the exact same name, or mugen won't reconize them. also, make sure when you unzip them you dont end up with a duplicate folder. you don't want "Sakura>Sakura>Sakura.def" you want "Sakura>Sakura.def" so make sure that WinRar didn't do that to you like it loves to do sometimes.

after adding characters, save your "select.def" and go into mugen. they should show up. If you were running mugen while doing this, exit it and go back in.

adding stages is just like characters, only not just like characters. You can get stages pretty much the same way you get characters, but once again I uploaded a few of my favorites to get you started:

www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/stages.rar

Some stages will track you when you super jump, like in X-men: children of the atom, and some don't like in every other fighting game in the universe. I've included three of each.

once you unzip this and open it up, you'll see six folders. in each folder you'll see three files. A .sff, a .def, and .mp3. stick the .sff and the .def into your "Stages" folder, but unlike with characters, just toss the files in there, don't give them their own folder. Toss the .mp3s into your "sound" folder.

go back into "data" and open up your handy dandy "select.def" again. Go alllll the way to the bottom and you should see where you add stages. unlike with characters, you gotta actually type somethign out here.

say you're adding the Daily Bugle. It would look like this:
Quote:
stages/bugle.def

each stage goes on it's own line, just like characters here's what mine looks like:

Quote:

;-----------------------
[ExtraStages]
;Put extra stages here. They will be available in VS and Watch modes.
;For example, you can insert "stages/mybg.def".

now normally stages don't come with music, and you have to add your own. I just happen to be generous. So lets go through how to add music to your stages.

go into your "stages" folder and pop open one of the .def files. don't fuck with anything in here except for two things, or you could drastically change how the stage works (such as cahracters jumping off the screen and not turning around when they jump over you and stuff.)

you'll notice on the very top, the [info] part. it looks something like this:

Quote:
;--------------------------------------------------------
[Info]
;Name of the stage.
name = "Flooding Tunnels"
author = "Enscripture"

;--------------------------------------------------------

make sure the stuff in quotations stays in quotations, as it's important. you can change "name=" to whatever you want. here I thought DD_Abubos Stage" sounded retarded, so I changed it to "Flooding Tunnels." you can do this for characters as well, by changing the "displayname=" because some guys think "AthenaKOF2002" sounds pretty bad compared with "Athena Asimaya" and a simple "Wolverine" is much nicer than "Wolverine 7118."

back on topic, scroll down to [music]. it looks like this:

Quote:
;--------------------------------------------------------
[Music]
;Put a filename for a MOD, MP3 or MIDI here, or just leave it
;blank if you don't want music. If an invalid filename is
;given, then no music will play. To play CD audio, put
;the track number followed by ".da". Using a track number of
;0 will play a random audio track. For example, to play
;track 3 from a music CD, use:
; bgmusic = 3.da
bgmusic = sound/gaktlonging.mp3

;Adjust the volume. 0 is normal, negative for softer, and
;positive for louder (only for mp3, mods and CDA)
bgvolume = 255

;========================================================

ignore everything it says, as most of it is either outdated or irrelevant, and make sure bgmusic= sound/WHATEVER YOUR MP3 IS CALLED.mp3 mugen doesn't like spaces or weird symbols in it's filenames, so I suggest keeping things simple, like I did with "bgmusic= sound/gaktlonging.mp3" here. it works with underscores though, so if you had a file like "gakt_longing.mp3" that would work too. bgvolume=255 can be left alone, as it doesn't make much of a difference.

obviously the default mugen stuff is boring and bland, and you can change lifebars and stuff, or change the entire screenpack (which is what most people will do to get a bigger character select screen.) This will become a must eventually. Some of that is more in depth, so I'll post about it later when somebody needs it, and request a good one for them when the need arises.

but in the meantime, lets at least add some music to things like the cahracter select screen, ok? I uploaded my old songs to THI to get you started, because I think the fit nicely with this screenpack. that, and I'm nostalgic.

www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/sound.rar
download, unzip, you know the drill.

drop all three of those songs into your "data" folder, but as three individual files. you want "data>civilized.mp3" not "data>sound>civilized.mp3." then go into your "data" folder, open your "system.def" and look for something that looks like this towards the top:

Quote:

[Music]
title.bgm = data/sober.mp3
title.bgm.loop = 1

select.bgm = data/jambi.mp3
select.bgm.loop = 1

vs.bgm = data/vs.mp3
vs.bgm.loop = 0

make sure all those loops=1 and change away. make title.bgm=data/civilized.mp3, select.bgm=data/select.mp3 and vs.bgm=data/vs.mp3 and you should be set.

last thing here isn't a big deal, but I find it helpful.

www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/ffsetup.exe

that's fighter factory. it's kind of helpful for some thigns even if you aren't makign characters. when you notice a character's big portrait is all screwy on the select screen ,you can use this to fix it.

open up the character's .sff file in this, and click the polaroid looking icon on the top. it's to the right of the icon of the two people.

if you're guy's portraits are showing up all green and messy, find your guy's portraits. they'll be in the "9000" group, and make sure that "shared palette" is unchecked. save the .sff.

to replace the big portrait entirely, or add one to a guy that doesn't have one, find one you want, it'll have to be a .pcx. add it, make it group=9000, image=1, shared palette=no, and X,Y=0,0. you can make the old portrait image=2 or delete it entirely. save the .sff.

here's a screencap for you:

it has come to my attention that the fighter factory that I uploaded to THI is fucked, so here's where to get it:

I got an error message that said "Error: Setup Files Corrupted" with that one, too. Maybe it's just my comp, although I've never seen that message before.

ok, last one, I promise!
http://www.freewarefiles.com/downloads_counter.php?programid=19675

mirror 2 is what I used.

also, you guys should hurry up and download whatever characters you want out of those, because I'm probably gonna take them down for space soon.

Are any MK characters available for Mugen?

How about Ronnie James Dio?

And yes, that second one is a serious question.

I had MUGEN about 6-7 years ago, but I wasn't very good with computers, so I couldn't figure out how much of it worked. My friends and I have always wanted to get it and make characters out of ourselves.

I'd like to get it to try some stuff, but I'm worried about memory and specs. JEW, what would you say are the base specs for the program and what would you say the average file size is for different types of files (i.e, characters, stages, etc.)?

When you gave me those chars, I ran out of slots ^^

The only characters I have are Kung-Fu man (already in the game), and MK2 Scorpion. And those might get deleted, because my comp may be fucked up, and in that case I'll have to wipe and reload everything (that's gonna be a bitch).

there are tons of MK characters, but personally I dislike them. i've been meaning to get them all now though, because I have a section on my screenpack dedicated to them, I figure I might as well fill it up.

somebod also make scorpion, sub zero, and sektor in a capcom style, they're pretty cool.

there is no dio, but anyone who knows how to make charcters could probably make him easily. I would love to have him.

the specs really depend on the screenpack you use. the one I have is a resource whore, but more basic ones don't need much to run fine. let me see if I can look up things like file sizes and shit for you if you need specifics, but overall the stuff is pretty small. it's jsut when you start adding it all togeter that it starts taking alot of space. my game has hundreds of cahracters and almost two hundred stages (wiht over a hundred mp3 files for stage music) so it takes quite a while to load and is a few gigs big.

making a game with you and your buddies should be no problem though.

char, if you need to restart, lemme know and I'll help you out.

bomberman, how many characters do you have?

all characters, stages, ect are different sizes, obviously, but on average a cahracter is 9mb, and a stage (without mp3) is 1mb.

a game I've been putting together that has 76 characters, a decent screenpack, 20 stages (with 20 mp3s) is 841mb.

still got them? I'd be really interested in playing as them. tell me more about them.

the only clouds I can find are mini sized, and the only zero I can find is mini as well.

I got two ricks, but one is mini and the other is kind of crappy.

I found out that my comp was fine, so I still have my files. I can't get my Balrog's Stage theme MP3 to work, though. MUGEN keeps giving me file compatibility errors.

it's gotta be either an MP3 or an OGG.

you might need to update your plugins too.

www.tehinter.net/uploads/mugen/plugins.rar unzip that and add it to your "plugins" folder.

this might be helpful. I can't be bothered to watch it to find out. the kid's voice pisses me off.

you pretty much jsut gotta go into your mugen.cfg and make sure it reconizes your new plugins.

It's an MP3, so I probably don't have the plugin. Are you gonna be on AIM later? Because I don't have a program to unrar things, so you'll need to send me the plugin as a zipped file.

The litigation papers are in the mail.

Oh and Jew, If you can find the good Scorpion and Sub-Zero that was in those videos, drop 'em by me.

Also, I got the Capcom Fighting Evo. 1.6 screenpack which fits 200 chars and has the KOF XI lifebars (making it look like a newly-released game.) but it's a resource whore, often putting out "out of memory" errors, and running it in windowed makes it look like a piece of shit ^^ but I'll live.

I never tried that screenpack, mostly because the lifebars and select screen annoy me. I don't like that rainbow shit.

I thought I gave you winrar, char.

you talking about the scorpion and sub zero from that glitch video? I got both of them. in a little while I'll get rid of hte characters I have uplaoded and uplaod a new batch of guys, and I'll be sure to include them in there.

It turns out I buried the install file for WinRAR in My Music, for some reason.
