Not interested that it had Stadium Events bundled with it, but it's funny that someone's mom sold their old Nintendo on eBay under the username lace_thongs35.

I'm all about collecting nostalgic and rare games, but I in no way would ever pay over $500 for any game whatsoever.

The game is fun, but here's the catch: It's World Class Track Meet. You know, the game that came on the Nintendo tri-cart with Duck Hunt and SMB. The only difference is the title screen.

I still have that cart. My palms were always sore after playing Track Meet. Wink

If they are spending that much money for one game then they more than likely have every other game that ever came out for the NES already. I would like to see what the person that wins it does with it though. Do they have a game room with nothing but sealed MIB games that nobody can play? What is the point in that?

What's the point in getting the complete set of anything?

Bragging rights, I presume.

If I were wealthy enough and wanted to pay 40K on something just for bragging rights, I think would spend it something that would actually impress a larger audience instead.

I don't understand it either. I don't even go for limited editions of new games.

I assume you're talking about the person selling the game.

Because the person bidding that much is a dumb son of a bitch.

I don't think so really. I mean, if you have that kinda money to spare, then why not?

If the person is trying to raise the money or scraping by just to afford buying it, that's another story. I'm sure some rich nerd will buy it.

I kinda wanna track down those tournament edition carts of star fox and donkey kong country that were sent out to some stores when the SNES first came out for that nintendo power contest. you know, where you'd go into the store, play a special version of the game, then if you did something right you won a prize.

Why would someone buy this? Easy. Because it becoming The Greatest Video Game Collector in the world is an achievable goal. The medium has only existed since the 1970s, making it a lot newer than other hobbies.

Even if you hit the lottery tomorrow, you will never become the greatest comic book collector, the greatest stamp collector, the greatest coin collector, the greatest car collector, or the greatest faberge egg collector, because there are people who have been doing it for years. There are second and third generation collectors in these mediums. There are people who collect some of these things PROFESSIONALLY. If you hit the lottery tomorrow though, you could make a serious run at World's Greatest Video Game Collector. You might not succeed, but you'd end in the Top Ten. And then Kotaku and Destructoid would start fawning over you, and eventually you'd parlay that into a job within the industry. And then you'd never pay for another video game again.

So the ultimate goal of winning the lottery is to get enough money so as to not have to spend any of it?

And when all those games eventually stop working (and they will, those games aren't made to last forever) they will have a largest collection of useless plastic and cardboard.

NES collectors that bid that high are just insane. I bought one of the few Mello Yello Q-Bert arcade machines in existence and I only paid a grand. I also am the person that dumped the game so it could be played on MAME and would be preserved for the future. I accomplished a lot more for my money than that person ever will and I paid a fraction of that.

I know you are being sarcastic, but I lost money, he gained money. As soon as I dumped it the value pretty much went down to that of a normal Q-Bert arcade machine. It is easy enough to prove mine is an original, but given the only difference is Q-Bert drinking Mello Yello between rounds who is going to pay what I paid when there are people burning EEPROMS for them for a fraction of the cost. The arcade collecting community isn't is rabid as the NES community. I guess being able to complete a collection is important. It is not feasible to own every arcade game ever made.

Honestly though, if I were a filthy rich, over obsessed NES collector I would much rather pay five figures for an unreleased prototype than a rare released game because it is still in the box. I can see more reason to want to own an Earthbound prototype.
