Geez, Gamestop isn't that bad. I got a used copy of Resident Evil 5 there for a mere $30, and it's good as new.
My main concern with this is how it will affect rentals; if I want to try out a game without buying it, I don't want to pay an extra fee just because I don't actually own it.
Maybe this is just me whining, but I also can't help but feel the damage this will do to the less wealthy gamers such as myself; I can't afford to shell out sixty bucks for every new game that comes out, and buying games used allows me to own all the games I want, albeit at a bit of a longer wait than everyone else.
As for the future of games being download-only, if I wanted all my games in a digital format, I'd bou a friggin' high-end computer.

I think one thing to consider is that only Sony, currently #3 in sales between the Big Three, is doing this. I'll start worrying when Nintendo and Microsoft start to adopt this stance.

They aren't supposed to do that because a lot of times people will be in a wal mart or something, calling from their cellphone, trying to see what games to steal for maximum profit. This is also one reason on why you get less back in cash as compared to store credit, and why you need to be over 18 and have photo id to get cash. |
I'm not trying to start anything but I don't see how "people...in a wal mart" is a reason or any reason. The reason is simple. GameStop doesn't want to quote a price and then have an r-tard come in and start talking about "One of your employees told me the game was $9.99 but the price tag says $29.99. I demand to pay $9.99!" By not soliciting prices over the phone they avoid that confrontation from ever occuring. Prices can also fluctuate which also makes it less appealing to do.
Also, GameStop offers a lower cash value on trades because the customer trading in the game is not typically going to be spending that money in the store, so in essence the company makes more buy giving more (credit). I'm not saying people don't steal games and sell them for money but thats not a reason why they give less in cash. |
Stealing is not the only reason we give cash, but it definitely is one of the reasons.
and yeah, you'd be surprised how many people trade in stolen games. That IS the reason we don't tell people trade in values over the phone, and that IS the reason that we require photo ID when people want cash back.
Any moron could say that someone told them a different price. we still have to give them the price that the computer scans it for, regardless of what it's tag says. that's why we're so big on making sure people can't peel the labels off and put them on other games.

Also Gamestop won't quote a price over the phone as it varies from store to store, all depending on current volume of said used game, so you can't shop around. And saying that Sony being in 3rd place makes them irrelevant is silly. They're in 3rd in console and a distant 2nd (but still successful) in handheld. They're also constantly gaining market share worldwide--and even in the U.S. at this point.

I'm saying that until Nintendo (or Microsoft when I get a 360) does it, Sony engaging in this practice is irrelevant to me.

Well, you'd better start saving because I think most, if not all PC games will be download only in 5 years, with consoles going that route probably the generation after next. There's already a few third party consoles being released soon that are completely download/streaming play only.
I said it before in this thread, but if you can't afford to buy every game when it comes out (like me), then just wait 6-12 months and get it for next to nothing. I got Bioshock 6 months ago for $5 and Empire Total War for $15. You don't have to buy used to save a nickel if you're patient and willing to wait a little while.

Well yeah but the problem is if it is a game with a heavy online base and you are charged a fee to play it online then the price will end up being the same as new which makes waiting pointless.

Ok so as long as the person who steals the games is getting credit they have nothing to worry about? Dude I could have this argument about corporate bullshit all day. Theft is a secondary reason for both of those. Maybe theft is big in your area but in the grand scheme of things thats not the purpose.

The truth is, if we offer you more in store credit, then you are more likely to take that offer, which means that you'll be turning right around and giving us the money we gave you right back to us.

once again, theft isn't the ONLY reason, but it IS one of the reasons.
and yeah, it's a deterrent. people who are trying to make a quick buck for beer or whatever are less inclined to do so, because they get less cash. They'd have to steal more, and that's dangerous.
We can't exactly say to a customer "we think you stole this. we aren't taking your trades." that's bad customers service, and it's accusing them. what we can do is minimize the damages. we take far less of a hit by letting people buy used games off of us, compared to giving them money right out of the register. It's also easier to track store credit, should the police decide "you know what? dude mcperson guy stole a lot of stuff from target. we ahve reason to believe he's done business in here."

Gamestop really isn't that bad. Annoying USED stickers aside, they have the best selection of games and accessories.

The one down the road used to have shit tons of GBA games so I used to frequent it for that reason alone. The selection has dwindled to nothing now though.

I tend to buy new games. The only time I really don't buy new games are for the older ones that either I didn't have money for them and wanted to wait for a lower price or for a "dead" system.

this isn't really a problem since the amount of games with actually engaging online play are pretty small. i buy a lot of used games, but never for online play
(modern warfare 2, uh, halo, maybe?)

Don't get me started on Modern Warfare 2's online. Since Infinity Ward made their choice to not allow Dedi's I can't play at my school, even on the LAN.
