...I was thinking the same thing. I'm only on World 2 (Not counting the World 5 Warp), and I have 75 lives. We all know getting extra lives in Mario games has never really been a problem, but it's almost ridiculously easy here.
But then again, maybe it's that way to offset the increased difficulty all the reviewers keep raving about... |
Well, I've been playing this game on a few different save files. On one I have 43 lives at the middle of world 2. On the other? I have currently one life and have used NINE FUCKING CONTINUES. The difference?
The one with all the lives? I played single player.
My girlfriend and I play the other one together. And no. She hasn't used a continue yet. How is this possible? This game is way more fun multiplayer, but a lot harder, as you have to time your jumps better and wait on the other person or have them wait on you. A good half of my kills are DIRECTLY because she killed me, either she knocks me into a pit by running to soon or shoves me into an enemy accidentally or bumps into me as I jump across a gap. The other half of my deaths are from me having to adjust to her speed or me trying not to get killed and accidentally running into an enemy.
I played with my brother as well, I still died a lot, so it's not her. It's the game mulitplayer. It's a lot more fun, but damn. You are constantly tripping over each other.

World 8-7 is awesome. Short, kind of easy, but very fun. The battle with bowser was cool too.
The penguin suit was annoying

The Wii game is fucking awesome. Way better than the DS one. The new power-ups are a lot better than I though they'd be.
Minor complaints:
1. I second that the new physics suck compared to the old school physics.
2. Why the fuck can't I take Yoshi out of a level?

That always annoyed me about the Donkey Kong Country games.

That's my only complaint about that game, albeit a big one.
I love Yoshi so much. He's been one of my favorite video game characters for so many years and I think he needs to be in more platformers.

The only time I don't like playing as Yoshi is either in Yoshi's Story or in Smash Bros. (only because there's about 25 other people I'd rather choose and I'm better at).

The Yoshi thing sucks, plus he hasn't been available much through three worlds. And for the physics, I feel like it plays crisper from the DS game. Why are they making star power stand out as a super special rare item? I always found this item pretty useless to walk into a level with...and all the toad house games are fun, but for some reason I am totally sucking at them hard, especially the matching game which is completely owning me.

theres a guide on gamefaqs.com that shows you the pairs.
at any rate, yoshi kicks in ass in smash bros. all 3 iterations.
and i agree about the 'rare' status that stars get. i have like 15 of them, but i never use them before i enter any stage.
i wish the rare items were truly rare. and maybe even so rare that they might be useless. but whatev. i had fun w/the game. a lot of fun actually

I've been playing this with my roommate, and we finally beat the game today (not including World 9), and I have to say that final fight with Bowser was some of the most fun I've had on a Wii yet. Maybe it was because it was multi-player and we always bumping into each other making him ten times harder, but it was a ton of fun and an awesome game overall, although I still haven't tried it single player.

not a fan of yoshi? or my horrible grammar adding the word 'in' for no reason at all?
but yoshi does kick ass. and in brawl he floats more after he throws his egg.

I dunno. I've just always found him to be more retarded than useful. granted, in a game that's more about fun than competition, he does have a lot of unpredictable moves and odd properties, but I just never really considered him to be of the "kick ass" description.

I've been playing this for a few hours...already pretty far in World 2, but it's just not exactly as cool as I thought it could be. The controls feel too loose for Mario, and I hate having to reaffirm myself with certain things like climbing the fencing, if I continue to hold the control pad I will fall...unlike how it was in SMW. Overall...I'd give it a 6 out of 10....it just doesn't seem that cool to me.
Also I wish if they could do one fucking thing...have the option to replay the level if you die but not return you to the map, they allowed this in SMW2, yet this game seems to be tedious with making you go back to the map, select the level then get another screen after that. A simple yes/no option would've done JUST fine.

Another thing that really pisses me off is that I was playing this last night and the goddamn disc error shit came up.
I had just gotten done with half of World 3 *100% complete* and was about to face Lemmy.
What a piece of shit...I don't even feel like playing anymore

Sorry for the bump but I finally got to play this and holy shit is co op annoying as all hell. Since one player is usually better than the other you end up constantly bouncing off each other and falling down pits, until the less coordinated player decided to bubble through all the castles so you can get through the rest of the level without their asshattery getting the both of you killed. Co op seems like a great way to ruin friendships. I can't imagine what a clusterfuck 4 player co op is.

NakaTaleeli's been doing a Let's Play of it with Elementalogre and a female friend of theirs. The chick keeps running ahead without much regard for what the other two guys are doing (big surprise that she's the reason why she's died the most and eaten 3 continues).

I'm actually in the 9th World now after taking a lot of time off of playing. I'm still not big on it, but I'll be damned if I don't my money's worth out of it.
Edit: Just got 100% on it...overall rating from me? C -

I just got this, it's fun. I don't know, it's not all that great, but it's fun. I'm just a little into World 2, I got to the level where you have to press B every half a second or you don't get to see the ground, and didn't feel like playing something dumb and tedious like that, so I took a break. I've got thirty men even right now, and I'm on the second level of the second world... jeez. Also, yeah, powerups are way too common. By the time I got to the halfway point in the first end castle, I'd gotten three ice flowers. Also, agreed on the physics, they're dumb.
Yeah, mixed feelings. It's fine, I guess.
