Hey all, my unit got called up on an emergency preparedness drill today, and I'm not sure how long its going to take. As of now I'm anticipating being able to make it, but on the off-chance I don't show, that would be why. (Give me 'til 9:15 if you don't mind, just in case they actually release us at 9; if I'm not here by then we're probably running overnight or overweekend.)

I've been DM'ing a game with some friends of mine, and I have to say, my life has been changed by an incredible piece of freeware called autorealm. Whoever DM's the Sydlexia DnD game, you should look into getting this. It makes map making incredibly easy.

Well, I wouldn't want to disappoint Woodzy, so here you are...
Thoughts before installing - I actually already don't like it. Just the plain and bare page design, the screenshot that looks like it was taken on a Windows 95 machine, and the fact that the news page says it was started in 2003 and hasn't been updated since 2005... Screenshot makes it look like an annoyingly more complex Paint program, let's see how it does in testing...
During testing - Well... It has a large amount of largely unrecognizable or oddly drawn clip art. They also apparently couldn't decide which perspective they wanted, as some things are drawn from a straight down view, others from a straight ahead view, and still others at any number of odd angles. Drawing seems harder than it should be for a map making program... Wait, what? There's a guns and lasers and missiles section amongst all the terrain and city drawing clip arts... I guess that works, depending on what kind of campaign you're running. Okay, rotating and resizing and whatnot else is easy enough, that's a plus for it. I'm left wondering... What does this have that I couldn't manage to draw by hand? ...Granted, we play online, so I haven't hand drawn anything...
I strongly urge you to look into MapTools and the other Tools programs on that site. I only just discovered them myself, but they've easily replaced the old Game Table program we used to use. They have bunches of tutorial videos for it, as well as tons of downloadable images to use in it (I got the first of a number of downloads, and it had 2.72 gigs worth of images in it). The maps you can create are pretty damned realistic, and it has the advantage (for us, anyway) of also being a program like Game Table that you can host games online with.

Guess what? I love fernin. Not in a gay way but more so like a "teach me how to play D&D and be patient with me while I read and adapt to these ridiculously complicated rules" kinda way.

Just MapTool version Whatever the latest version number happens to be. We may try the others, but I think MapTool has everything we're looking for.
Also, they have a torrent file of images that can be used in the program, grab it if you can. It's pretty damn big, 2.72 gigs of images, but it's worth it, friggin tons of stuff to use and play with. I'm also not sure if my having everything will give you all access to it when we play.

A heads up that I got called out to help my Guard unit prep for annual training today. (I'm not going since I'll be at LDAC during that time, but they want my help sorting and signing for equipment and such.) I'm thinking we'll probably be done well before 8pm (we had *better* be anyway), but on the off chance some sort of sensitive item is missing or someone higher up the command chain gets a bug up their butt, I may be late. If you have enough players (which you should with our new additions?) don't wait up; I'll join in as soon as I get home.

I'm moving today, so I won't have internet for a while, hopefully only for a few days. I doubt I'll make the next session though, sadly. I'll be back when I can.

No D&D this week guys. Joyful surprise emergency drill. Sigh. I may be in in time to be late, but that depends on whether we get kept overnight or not.
