I just got my permit and I'm about to enroll in the local safety course asap. I'm looking for a Honda CBR600 f2 or f3. It's one of my dreams to own a sport bike so I'm working my ass off to achieve it now.

By sport bike do you mean stuff like motocross?

I rode a motorcycle once, but got chased by an eighteen wheeler driven by a robot police officer from the future who was hell bent on murdering me.

Falling off of a dirt bike has scared me off of motorcycles.

Ah, you lucky bastard! I want a bike so damn badly. I don't think I'll be getting one anytime soon, but its always been a goal of mine to have one someday. I'm not nearly as close as you are though. I demand pics once you get one! Very Happy

Don't think I'll ever get one, but I did learn to ride on my friends Suzuki Volusia 800, good times. Crotch rockets aren't my bag, but they sure do look cool.

I never saw the appeal of a bike like that.

It's like saying "I wan't to maximize my chances of death on the highway so I can go VROOM VROOM"

Ah, so you meant a street bike. We've got my dad's Yamaha (very similar style) down in the basement but it's too crowded to get a good shot of the thing.

For a while I did yeah, but it was mainly cause I was thinking TOO much about what I was doing. It balances out after a while. The biggest thing for me at first was worrying about losing control and taking a header to the asphalt, so I started to overcompensate and had a close call or two, but like I mentioned before, I started to mellow out a bit and it was gravy from there.

ETA: I retract my previous statement, I MAY get one eventually, not anytime soon though, but if I do it'll be a cruiser.

You didn't mention anything about learning how to shift so was the bike a 5 or 6 speed? I'm more worried about learning how to down shift when I'm slowing down.

Awesome so your advice would be to just relax and not get to jumpy while learning?

I rode on one when I was 5... and I don't really remember being asked, because I was scared shitless. I remember just focusing on the speedometer to calculate my odds of dying in case we crashed or something.

If I had the money, I wouldn't mind a sports bike, like a Kawasaki Ninja or something similar (Road Rash, anyone?), but I wouldn't get a Harley. I like the way they look, but it's just not for me.

RIP Hacker.

Goddamn that is such a sweet looking bike. Must get my license and $4000 cash asap. All in all, you're just another brick in the wall.

I'd like to have one, but I'd want to get a Harley cruiser of some kind. The crotch rockets aren't my thing.

That said.....I think realistically I'm too scared to do it. The thing is, you can be the best rider in the world. That's not gonna stop somebody else's dumb ass from hitting you.

You have to be smarter than the dumb ass driver who doesn't look when changing lanes. It comes down to you more so than others because you have the power/speed to get out of a dangerous situation. You just need to be very very smart.

No doubt, but even that won't stop you from getting rear-ended at a red light by some teenage girl who's texting while driving. It just frightens me how someone else's momentary lapse in attention can put you in a wheelchair or worse.

Yeah, motorcycles scare me, especially those tiny crotch rockets. You can be the most careful driver in the world, but all it takes is one idiot, and because you're on a bike like that, you're minimizing all potential protections and maximizing all chances of death or serious injury. I mean, you can hit a rock in the road the wrong way and that's it.

I've been rear ended by an old lady in a cadillac that totalled my first car, but if I was on a bike at that time, I probably wouldn't be here right now.

At least Harleys and choppers offer a miniscule amount of protection because they're a bit beefier. Those street bikes are fucking suicide though.

Ah yes, very good point. You have to have a lot of luck too I suppose. Scary but that's life. I just see this as trying to enjoy my life to the fullest instead of worrying about dying all the time.

Riding a motorcycle seems like a ton of fun and I would like to learn how, but I can't justify the risk.

I personally know three people who were in life altering accidents on motorcycles. One of them made a riding error and dumped a bike on a highway exit ramp. For those familiar it was on the Merit Parkway in CT. People drive around 80MPH in a 55 zone, but even cops push it that fast. The exit ramps are 15-25MPH. This guy just didn't make a good decision. Still, he can't ever run again from one mistake.

Two other friends were both hit by other motorists that were in the wrong and didn't see them because they were on motorcycles. One cannot walk correctly anymore and the other was a MMA guy who can't fight any longer. One of them was stopped at an intersection and hit by a car who took the turn too tight because they didn't see the bike. The other was hit by a guy who ran a red. In cars with seat belts, all three would have been fine.

I should mention that I know people who I am not friends with who have had worse accidents, but it seems like that is just the way it is with motorcycles on the open road.

Is it cool? Yes. Would I like to do it? Yes. Will I risk my health even if it is just a 1% chance of injury? No. I prefer skiing at 70MPH.
