I know there`s a way to play steam games without the internet but for the life of me I can`t figure it out. Can anyone help? I wsnt to record the next parts of my LP but fucking steam won`t let me access my games with no internet. When the box comes up that says start in offline mode i click it but then get an error box saying it couldn`t connect to steam network and it closes. Well no shit Sherlock that`s why I wanted to play in fucking offline mode!! Help someone? Please?

Steam just seems too complicated to even worry about. I know nothing about it, though. I'm just the kind of guy the prefers a physical copy of a game.

I do have physical copies of a lot of the games, but you still can't play them without accessing Steam. Which you're supposed to be able to do in offline mode but, like I said, its not working, I don't know why, and I'm fucking pissed. I paid for the goddamn game; how dare you fuckingrestrict my access to it just because my internet is down! FUCK YOU.

From Steam:
| Quote: |
What is Offline Mode?
Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without reconnecting to the Steam Network every time you wish to play - this is particularly useful if you do not plan on playing over the internet and would prefer not to download new updates for your single-player games.
Please note that you must connect to the Steam Network and test each of the games you would like to use in Offline Mode at least once to set up your account and configure Offline Mode on your machine. |
So it appears that in order to be able to play games in offline mode, you have to set them to offline mode at least once when you are connect to Steam so they can download the files they need to be able to play offline. A tad silly really.

Oh well, at least that makes me a tad less angry at Steam. Its a stupid system, but it IS my fault for not realizing I needed to set that up in advance. (Although a little more notice or clearer instructions on their part would have been dandy, since I have no idea how long it'll be til I can play again now.) |
You'd think they could have made the entire process automatic the first time you signed online to avoid this very predicament.

I agree with you 110%. My dad has Steam installed on his computer and I hate it.

Okay... You can only play certain games offline, by switching your steam from online to offline. You can't play any valve games like CSS, HL2, HL1 and a couple others. You can play L4D but not L4D2 because of Steam Cloud (new thing I have no idea). It's one reason why I have such rage for steam. But all non-valve games you can play, like Killing Floor, Peggle, and Rainbow 6

That's what I was going to say too.
I never understood all the hate for Steam. I kind of like it and find it extremely convenient. So what if you have to connect to it to play a game? It takes 10 seconds. And I love being able to see what my friends are playing at any given moment, and being able to jump right into the same game if I want to. But then again, I remember my passwords and am always connected to the internet, so never had a problem.
It is superfluous though to have to go through Steam to play a game you have a physical copy of though. Steam to me should just be DLC or direct downloads of games. But then again, you'd have people complaining that they can't get achievements with a physical copy of the game if that were the case. Can't please everyone.

Oh, and sis... sometimes steam acts like it is set to offline mode for some odd reason. It's like the client decides to let you play when it wouldn't mind. Only issue is when you get online again, you have to remember your password... I can't recall which one is mine...
And Panda, I agree that it'snice to see your friends playing and jump into that game, but there are other programs that do that, X-fire and GSC for example. Granted X-fire is a bandwidth stealing POS.

I can appreciate Steam now that I have reliable high speed internet. When I bought HL2, the box said internet connection required for multi-player. Fine. I had no idea that that fucker had to install and update through Steam before I could even play the game and I had AOL dial-up at the time.
Offline mode is bullshit. Sure, you can play offline, but you have to sign on first. If you can sign on, why would you want to play offline?
