I say we start a disaster relief fund for them, we can send food. Let's send a box full of Quaker Oatmeal!
Too soon? Too lame? Or maybe both?

i just pretend Limbaugh dosen`t exist. Makes me a better, happier person.
Poor Hati. What little infastructure they had is gone. Its like New Orleans but x10. :(
There`s actually talk ny Guard unit may be Federalized and deployed to go help with the disaster relief. Probably won`t happen but I kind of wish it would. It would be really really to be able to go help proactivly and in person.

I hope there will be some sort of concert or other event to benefit them. Kind of like a Live Aid 2. Not only would that raise a ton of money, it would be cool. I really hope Limbaugh and Robertson shut the fuck up by the way.

^ Well technically Live 8 was Live Aid 2 - being pedantic.

Sure, what happened in Haiti really sucks and is terrible, but I'm of the mind the USA needs to fix itself first. There's still people not far from my house who are still living in a goddamn FEMA trailer, and the hurricane was what, four years ago?
I laud people who donate to the cause of Haiti (being one of several I know), but at the same time, I think our involvement should begin and end there until we pick up our own slack. If we're doing this shitty taking care of our own citizens, why should we fuck with Haiti?
Unless I get the jist that we can do better in Haiti than we did in Louisiana, I'm a little skeptical.
Sorry if I sound bitter, but my dad paid a pretty penny for his house, and it was destroyed, and yet, he had to buy a trailer and live in it. I'm kind of bitter about it, because he hasn't seen a DIME from his house being destroyed, or having to evacuate, yet.
On the other hand, what Rush and Pat Robertson are talking about is despicable. It's no wonder we have such a backwards ass, idiotic populace. Because someone as highly rated as Limbaugh has millions of people believing that the worst part of this disaster is that Obama or someone will use it as political leverage, in which case I point out to Limbaugh-- did not Bush use 9/11 as political leverage? Get a brain, hypocrite.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |

I just read Haiti got hit by a 6.1 aftershock. That's pretty intense.
Even though I too agree we have no business in other parts of the world until we can fix our own situation a tad better, I can't help but to put my political or economical beliefs on the backburner long enough for my heart to go out to these people.

It's good to see I'm not the only one getting upset and annoyed at the global drive to help Haiti. We have no business there, and all these millions of dollars being donated (that will eventually end up in the hands of warlords and arms dealers just like in Somalia) could really be used to help out our own economy.
Every cent that is sent to another, messed up country is one more cent taken out of our economy which hurts it even more. Don't people realize that when they donate their paychecks? Removing funds from the country weakens the economy of that country.
Don't they realize that NO ONE helped the USA when Katrina or the Northridge earthquake hit? Hell, not even people in the USA helped those affected in their own country. I'm so fucking sick of everyone expecting America to come to the rescue every time something goes wrong even if it bites us in the ass every single time (and it does).
I feel for the people there, but it's their business to sort out, and I can tell from the mass numbers of looters and violence that is happening there right now that they don't really deserve any help anyway. Any money donated is just going right into the looters' and rebel leaders' pockets. Just makes me sick to see so many bleeding hearts crying about Haiti and how it's our duty to help them, as if they'd ever help us.

One of my friends made a similar point. Something along the lines of "When you have a massive earthquake in an area with corrupt government, no building codes, and an illiterate majority for your population, deaths happen."
|
"Life is a waste of time. Time is a waste of life. Get wasted all the time, and you'll have the time of your life!" |

I don't care. It's amazing the way nothing affects me. When people suffer I just don't care. And I know it's not right. I should feel something. It's not that I'm a bad person. I'm not happy with their suffering. But I'm just...meh. What a cold place is the XXI century

Yeah, Brazil had some troops in an humanitarian mission on Haiti. Some of them died, and that includes two of the country's most important philantropists...
Yet, I feel that Brazil is only sending more troops because they want so bad a chair at the UN Security Council.
Nevertheless, as much as I don't wish natural disasters happening anywhere, Haiti really did not deserve to be hit by an earthquake of such proportions...

I think that's pretty normal actually. As humans, we're not supposed to know of tragedies that happen in other countries, or halfway around the world so we haven't yet evolved to fully process what we're supposed to feel for strangers. It's the same as hearing about a home fire or bombing in Israel on the news. Everyone just says "that sucks" and moves on with their own life, completely forgetting about it a few minutes later.
We're desensitized to tragedy (since we hear about it far more frequently than we naturally should) and not yet equipped to empathize with strangers from another culture.

Well we are desensitized to an extent. The US has never had a loss of life that big, and if we did we would completely freak out.

Plus, it'd be hard for any country to build itself back up when at least 80% of the population is living in poverty....and they've had to deal with a military coup....and a a few hurricanes.....

I also wonder exactly how far we're expected to build them up. Back to where they were? Or is it now suddenly our responsibility to elevate them to a first world country?

Some countries seem to value the quality of human life more than dollars I guess...also where they were was a harsh monarch dictatorship that killed over 30,000 people that oppsed them.
Also, it's a natural disater. Of course people will be over dramtic about, some will be just "that sucks", and some will be "who cares?". That's how people have been. Until it happends to their own country it's a big deal, but if it happends in some "god-forsaken hell-hole" there's a whole amount of doubt and accusations etc. That's how people are.
