Alright so this game is coming out for PS3/360 called Dark Void by Capcom. Its essentially this cool shooter accompanied with a jetpack for good measure.
Apparently Capcom had planned this game since the late 80's but just couldn't get it going and finally got around to putting it out just now (fortunately for us that means it is a $5 download on the DSi store).
IGN wrote:
As the '80s were drawing to a close, the developers at Capcom began work on a top-secret project that aimed to set new standards for the platformer genre. That game was called Dark Void. Alas, Capcom suspended development on Dark Void as it began to evaluate the SNES. Before long, the game was shelved and drifted, unnoticed, into the annals of gaming history. Dark Void became a legendary "lost project" at Capcom. Now, nearly 20 years later, Dark Void is back! To commemorate the game's humble origins, Capcom has commissioned this recreation of the original 8-bit classic, now re-titled Dark Void Zero, on the Nintendo DSi system. You play as Rusty, the first human born in the Void, who must take on the Watchers in a quest to stop their domination of Earth. With the aid of Nikola Tesla and his state-of-the-art rocket pack, Rusty must take down the Watchers and their minions across three intense levels of action and intrigue.
I downloaded it and it truly just plays like a classic NES game that never got to see the light of day.
The presentation is also fantastic, when the game boots up it shows an NES cartidge version of the game and instructs you to "blow into the mic" to clean off the dust before the game can start. Love it.
Does it use both screens? Does it make full use of all the DSi buttons and functionality? Because those are the two reasons Nintendo keeps giving us as to why there won't be GBA/GBC/GB games on the DSi.
Yea, one screen works as a map, but no, there is no touch screen functionality that I have seen. It is totally badass though, such a great game for $5.
There are rumors Nintendo will announce/release DS2 this year, you know, because we haven't had enough versions of the DS in the last few years. So if that happens, you can play Dark Void Zero on that.
Supposedly Nintendo is worried about the iPhone gaining momentum as a gaming platform. Honestly, I really don't see how that's possible. As the proud owner of an iPhone, I can tell you that it has exactly two interface options: touch and tilt. It is extremely limited in its controls, and most of the games are terrible. Even games that SHOULD work well with the iPhone controls, such as Super Monkey Ball, do not. The games that *do* work well on the iPhones are simple retreads of old games such as Breakout and free flash games like Bejeweled.
Apparently another issue is piracy. Sega, Capcom, and Ubisoft have all threatened to stop developing for the DS if better piracy controls are not implemented. So that has Nintendo worried.
well unless they make a cartridge for that, i won't be playing it. it looks cool but i am not going to drop near $200 just so i can get a handheld system that is not reverse capatible like the last one.
I play quite a bit. When I'm at work snood takes my priority over dealing with the idiots in my lane. Granted that's the only reason why I still have my old DS with it falling apart.
I just bought Dark Void Zero last night and the story behind it is epic. I'm surprised the guy still had the game.

Piracy certainly is an issue. I don't think I have seen a platform that was emulated to damn near perfection as fast as the DS. That's gotta be hurting them a little. For the record I certainly do not promote piracy.

DS Lite can only play GBA games, not GB/GBC. I keep a GBA SP and DSi on hand so I have almost complete backwards compatibility.
oh wow. ok, i know a place to get a cheap sp thanks syd!

to be honest, it's worth keeping backwards compatability. there are a lot of zeldas, metroids, castlevanias, and megamans worth playing.

True. I got FF4-6 for the GBA on clearance when Circuit City went under and I've been playing through them. I find that prefer to play them on the SP though. I don't know why it bothers me, but I find it annoying playing a one screen game on a two screen system.
