Does anyone know of any cheap games they could recommend? Also if I were to buy a normal controller would it be compatible with games like the Wii version of Twilight Princess or Klonoa?

Excite Truck is cheap as hell but actually really fun. You'll probably get tired of it 2 days though. Can't go wrong with Mario Galaxy, House of the Dead and what not.

Klonoa is compatible with every controller. Twilight Princess is not. The system can run the GCN version of the game, but it is out of print.
If you haven't played any of the Metroid Prime games then Prime Trilogy is a great buy. Get it quick though, cuz it's going out of print.

MPT is great. Got it last month for $25 at target. They had a special for only one week

Like Josh said, Mario Galaxy is perhaps the best title on the console so far, unfortunately it is probably one of the harder ones to find cheap, worth every penny though.
I bet you can find Mad World real cheap used, that game is exclusive and alot of fun. Mario Kart is also classic.
There are also a number of WiiWare efforts worth checking out, and hell you can look into Netflix in the Spring.

If you're into rail shooters, House of the Dead 2&3 Return is a fun budget title. House of the Dead Overkill is even better, as it's designed for the system instead of being a port. Unfortunately, to play them properly you'll need either the Wii Zapper or the Nyko Sureshot. The good news? The Wii Zapper is $20 and comes with Link's Crossbow Training, which is pretty damn fun in its own right.

If you are gonna go for Rail Shooters, I would advise the new Deadspace Extraction effort by EA. I have heard nothing but good things.

Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles is really fun, too. Umbrella Chronicles is okay, but had some problems. Darkside Chronicles improved upon it.

Yeah I have had a lot of fun with Darkside Chronicles. Best played semi tipsy with friends and low lighting.

I'm surprised by the amount of mature titles on the Wii. Since I never was a really big fan of Mario I think I'd like to give Galaxy a try.
Thanks for all the input everyone, I really appreciate it. If anyone else has any suggestions feel free to speak up.

No Mores Heroes is another great buy. There's also a budget bundle that packages it with Red Steel. Keep in mind though, that there's a lot of hate for Red Steel out there. It's not the best game ever, but it's fun. And $30 for 2 games is a pretty nice deal.
Also, both games are receiving sequels in the immediate future.

Hopefully the controls will be betteron Red Steel 2. I say hopefully, because there are still companies putting out Wii games with shitty controls. The original Red Steel was great game. A decent storyline, great music, polish graphics. The only problem was mediocre controls. Unfortunately, that's a huge problem. But Red Steel a launch title, so Ubisoft has had several years to learn from their mistakes... hopefully.

Actually I already had No More Heroes picked out as one of my first buys. Hearing that it comes bundled with another game is just icing on the cake.
